Cassadee Pope discusses her most influential music:1. Shania Twain: She taught me to be a strong, independent artist. She stands for female empowerment, sure. But I think her songs and message transcend genders. 2. Backstreet Boys, Backstreet’s Back: This album was front-to-back melodic heaven. Some of the lyrics were a little out there, but it didn’t matter. They had this unique sound that was kind of edgy at the

time and the mixture of their voices was the perfect balance. 3. Michelle Branch, The Spirit Room: I always felt like Michelle Branch had a very country way of writing songs. Her melodies were familiar sounding and that’s why I got hooked. 4. Martina McBride: Her voice has been a huge influence for me since I was a kid. She was the artist who taught me what “belting” was. That big voice makes you feel some strong emotions. 5. Avril Lavigne, “I’m With You”: I absolutely love this song. I love every Avril song, to be honest, but this one is just so well written. I love the strong arrangement, her vocals, the lyrics, melody, all of it. She always represented such fearlessness. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I haven’t listened to Leon Bridges yet. I definitely plan to. I just get into these moods where I really want to listen to certain things, so I don’t make room for new stuff in those moments. • “Important” music you just don’t get: This one might upset some people. I didn’t grow up listening to The Beatles. I tried to get into them as an adult, but something just doesn’t click. I can appreciate and respect what they’ve done for music. But I’m not sure it’ll ever be my thing. • An album you listened to incessantly: I listened to Backstreet’s Back constantly, because I was obsessed with BSB. I had their posters on my wall. Their songs were always so good too. I sang into a hair brush in front of the mirror to that album a lot. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Cemetery” by Say Anything. I’ve been a fan of Max Beemis’ lyrics for a long time. He has a way of saying some pretty morbid things in a cool, melodic way. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I don’t have any guilty pleasure music. I think all music should be accepted and shared without any shame!

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE

Cassadee Pope

I went to work at Standard Oil at about 18 years old. I was a mail boy. Everybody liked me because I was the only one in the oil company in music. They’d always ask me if I’d play my guitar and sing for them. I started singing on a local television station too. I met Roy when I was 19. He was a little sandy headed boy, had long blond hair. My band and I, Joe Melson and the Cav-aliers, had gotten popular in the Permian Basin area. We were on KMID-TV in Midland, Texas and Roy was on another local TV station. A guy named Ray Rush heard my songs and wanted to get me writing and recording contracts. I’d written part of a song called “Raindrops.” Ray said, “I love it. Finish it and I’ll introduce you to Roy Orbison.” Roy was real popular locally and had a couple of records out on Sun Re-cords. I really liked him. I loved the sincerity in his voice. We went to Roy’s house in Odessa one evening and his wife Claudette an-swered the door. After the introductions, she handed me a guitar and I sang him “Raindrops.” Claudette flipped over the song. About three months later, I was going to college in Odessa. One night I was at a drive-in restaurant and here comes this big Cadillac. It was Roy. He said, “Can we take a little ride? I’d like to talk to you.” I thought he was going to ask me about “Raindrops.” But he said, “Joe you write a pretty good song, and I write a pretty good song, but if we put ‘em together I bet we’d make some great ones.” I said, “I know we would.” So that was the beginning. When we started writing together I thought, “Man, this guy can go anywhere with his voice.” Anything I could hear, he could sing. So I began to show him what I felt in these melodies and I started to change his style. Rockabilly melodies all go downward. The beat is what keeps them interesting, not the music theme. My songs went a different way. Even if you’re crying, the melodies keep you up. I call it “mood elevators.” When Roy and I wrote together, he began to try this style and fell in love with it. And the more he did, the greater he began to sing. It’s a funny thing about writing, you don’t ever know how ideas are gonna come into your mind. It comes from the Creator, actually. When Roy and I wrote, we had notepads, our guitars and amps. We sat there looking at each other and sometimes had nothing to say because we were together so much. But when that happened, Roy could crack me up with a joke. He was a very funny man. Not everybody knew that side of him. “Only The Lonely” was a true love story. At that age, you think there’s no way out, that you’re gonna die if you lose her. I had broken up with a girl and when I saw her driving off, I said, “There goes my baby. There goes my heart.”

Warner Bros./WEA’s Morgan Evans puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to 105.3 NewFM in Newcastle, NSW, Australia. The first time I heard myself on the radio, I was leaving a daytime show outside Boston and racing to get the airport on time, driving a rental car alone and stressed about missing the flight. Then I turned on the car radio, which was already up loud, and it was

the second verse of “Kiss Somebody.” I probably shouldn’t have, but I took video of the moment and posted it on Instagram. It’s pure joy and excitement! My funniest moment on radio tour was towards the end of the third week. I walked up to the check-in counter at Long Island Airport and the lady asked, “Where are you going sir?” To which I replied–with a blank and confused look on my face–”I have no idea.” My favorite road companion is…my guitar. It probably sounds cheesy, but I’m never bored with that thing around. Even when we store the other gear elsewhere, I always take my guitar to my room. I never know what I’m going to walk out of a truck stop with! Does anyone? That’s kind of the fun of it. I wish I could have dinner with Paul McCartney. Because, well, he’s Paul McCartney. And I’ll have what Paul’s having! My new album, Things That We Drink To, is my life over the last few years. And I’ve done some living! It’s about finding a new home on the other side of the world. It’s meeting the girl, falling in love and getting married. It’s losing someone you love, finding a way to keep your head up through the tough times and become the person you want to be. My last “road buy” was a jacket. I went to Seattle in October without anything warm. Rookie error. I’m currently binging Billions on Showtime. I wish I’d written “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” It might just be my favorite song ever. It’s timeless and impossible to listen to without a smile on your face. When those bells come in at the beginning ... come on! I have to bring flip flops on the road with me (or thongs as we call ‘em in Oz). My least favorite interview question is, “So, have you ever seen a kangaroo?” I’d love to be stuck in Kauai, Hawaii. It’s probably my favorite place I’ve ever been.

“Crying” was about the same girl. I would get over her. We’d drift apart and I’d think, “I can make it without her.” And then I’d see her again and wham, fall right back in love with her. We originally wrote the song for Don Gibson. We were writing it country and working on it one evening in Nashville at Roy’s house. Roy said, “I like it, but it needs something.” The melody for “crying over you” came into my mind and I sang it for him. He said, “That’s it!” And so we changed it from a country song to a pop song. There were times when I’d hear Roy sing something we’d written and think it might be a good one. With “Only The Lonely,” I said, “Well it might sell 200,000 ... but that sucker took off and kept going!” When Roy and I finished “Crying” and he sang it, I said, “Man that has got to be a hit.” But that wasn’t just based on our writing. It was his performance with the writing. It was the magical combination. And we had one. Going into the Hall of Fame is something I never thought I’d entertain. It’s an honor. I’m thankful they pulled my name out of the hat, and that they like my songs that much.

showed a Vietnam setting and my wife and I are both googling the meaning of the song because we had no idea that’s what it’s about.” New Replacement: At “Oklahoma’s New Country” KJKE/Oklahoma City, programmer Kevin Christopher is leaning on his weekly music meeting. “I used to do more on my own, but since we put Jake on the air and I’ve gotten a little older, I like having younger ears in the process,” he says. “We’ve gone to places sonically with the format I never thought we would go and I don’t hear all the music anymore.” “My MD and afternoon host are both women in their late twen-ties or early thirties with a good sense of what’s going on in the format. I like having their buy-in and letting them own some of the adds.” Conversions are not part of meetings. “I do callout with stuff that’s on the air, look at the metrics the reps send and sales in the market. If the artist has played the market I factor in if they draw a crowd, and I do some custom panels with geographically aligned stations.” KUPL/Portland PD and Alpha format captain MoJoe Roberts takes a two-pronged approach. involves air staff and sales people and has the biggest role in the decision process. A newer initiative is a weekly podcast titled Yeh, Meh or Neh in which a wide-ranging panel talks candidly about new music. Listen here. Pods & Evens: “We have our four on-air talents and bring in some outside voices who may or may not be country fans because it’s interesting to get that perspective,” he says. “They’ll have a point of view we didn’t think about. We gener-ally touch on five songs and have our returning champ, and we go around the room.” While the podcast is chiefly a content extension for the brand, music decisions can be influenced. “To a certain degree,” Roberts qualifies. “It’s not our actual music meeting ... it’s more for our fans. But it starts a conversation and is a good way to expose new music and let the listener decide.” An online poll allows those who’ve heard the latest episode to participate. “We host these on our website and prompt them to vote in the poll that’s right there on the page,” Roberts explains.

“It’s also a way we gauge the fan bases of local and regional artists. We’re not giving local performers airtime, but we can engage their fan base with our brand in this way. And it’s a more engaging approach than just putting 30 songs up on an online poll.” While acknowledging that putting unvarnished music opinions out for general consumption “could come back and bite me,” Roberts hopes the concept spreads. “We try to be honest because sometimes people are afraid of having a real conversation,” he says. “Go get a seller, the receptionist, another PD in the cluster. We’ll bring in label reps or radio people from stations outside the market. I challenge everyone to steal this idea and run with it.” Whatever the style, Roberts says the most important thing about music meetings is to do them. “We tend to get caught up with other things, but music is one of the top reasons people come to our brands,” he says. “We can’t dismiss the importance of that.”
