FOREWORD
---Amy Lee SegamiIIT Alumna, TEDx Speaker; TEDxIIT Founder
You probably are familiar with TED Talks which are known for sharing “ideas worth spreading.”TEDxIIT is an independently organized TED like event, hosted by IIT students, TEDxIIT is also an innovative leadership program at IIT, designed to help the students develop their professional skills, working with the Advisory Board composed of faculties, staffs. alumni and professionals. The goal is to produce a meaningful event to showcase the brilliant minds and inspired ideas from the IIT community for the global audience. The annual event is held live on campus as well as live streaming worldwide. The talks then are archived on the TED website.
Much like a start up, the students bring their passion, enthusiasm and energy to the table. After the leadership team go through a competitive selection process, they honor their commitment for the entire semester, with many hours of hard work and hands on participation. The experience is transformational. Within a tight time frame, they adapted quickly and learn exponentially in order to deliver a project that normally would have taken up to a few years to organize.Being part of this team is challenging but rewarding. They learn many real-life lessons: Accountability, timely delivery and follow up. Stepping out of a comfort zone. Reaching out to others. Practising inclusiveness and being a team player. With a positive mindset and can do attitude, students are trained to solve real problems. They practise convergent and divergent ideation, public speaking skills and improv techniques. They also know the tools and techniques for team collaboration.A true cross-functional team, participants network with students from other countries and those from other disciplines, ranging from computer science to food safety and health. Since they raise funds for this project, they gain valuable experience to become future corporate citizens and philanthropists.
As the founder, mentor and coach, I am delighted to present you the TEDxIIT students featured in the following pages. They have proven themselves to be stand outs among their peers as they have gone above and beyond the call of the classroom. They are self starters, highly motivated and well-trained. Given the opportunity and proper environment, they will help your organization to fuel innovation, expedite results and perform exponentially.

BUILD YOUR TEAM WITH ILLINOIS TECH TALENT
Thank you for your interest in the 2015 TEDxIIT at Illinois Tech. With the launch of this year’s event, we are pleased to share with you the inaugural edition of the 2015 TEDxIIT resume book.
At Illinois Institute of Technology, we believe that in order to continuously improve, we must “live” our values. The culture of a university is a shared system of values, beliefs, and attitudes that shapes and influences behavior. It is disseminated through the organization from top to bottom and from generation to generation. And, in order to continuously improve, those values must guide our actions and behaviors.
We define our culture using seven core-operating principles that we then used to guide us in our planning. Let me share three of these guiding principles with you.• FOCUS ON STUDENTS- Our primary mission is not only to educate students in their chosen disciplines, but also to inspire them to become innovators, leaders, and positive contributors to society. Our goal is to prepare our graduates for significant and sustainable professional success in their chosen careers.• STRENGTHEN FACULTY AND STAFF- The faculty inspire and direct all we do academically—from basic education to discovery and the creation of new concepts, systems, and products. The staff delivers our administrative services, and partners with the faculty, to ensure an excellent student experience. Foster Leadership and Ethical Decision-Making: Leadership and ethical decision-making are essential for the growth of the person as well as the organization. Leadership development therefore is important for all segments of the university—faculty, students, and staff. Succession planning is also required to continuously promote excellence.• COMMIT TO DIVERSITY AND EXCELLENCE- If we are to both remain relevant and attract the highest caliber of students, faculty, and staff, we must ensure that our community is inclusive and open to all viewpoints. A culture of excellence, as well as diversity, must pervade the university in both academic and non- academic areas.
Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] or me directly at [email protected]. Thank you for your interest. Sincerely,---Gerald DoyleVice ProvostStudent Access, Success, and Diversity Initiatives
