PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

On behalf of School Sport Victoria,

welcome to the School Sport Victoria

Primary Schools Track & Field

Championships.

Athletics have been a pillar of the school sport scene for decades. Today, the field has expanded, encompassing an even greater variety of competitive options for all students. While many students get involved in school athletics for sheer love of the sport, there are significant benefits from these extracurricular activities as well. Students who participate in school sports learn the benefit of representing their community. These athletes learn the fun of team rivalries and revel in the praise of a job well done for their school. There are many other benefits which include time management skills, creativity in finding ways to improve, strong focus and concentration development, internal skills for handling pressure, learning when to take risks, and taking responsibility for individual performance. These skills go far beyond the athletics track or even beyond school. Student athletes reap the benefit of their participation for the rest of their lives.

School Sport Victoria is part of the Department of Education & Training and

provides inter school sport in 19 sports for more than 2,300 Government,

Catholic and Independent schools across Victoria. This involves more than

550,000 students from Years 4 to 12.

I congratulate all competitors who are competing here today it is a genuine

achievement to have progressed in order to qualify for the state finals. As you

strive to be your best today in your events, remember you have already

enjoyed success in actually qualifying to be here to compete and that only a

select few can be the overall event winners, so enjoy the experience and the

competitive challenges you face. I am sure that we will witness performances

of the highest quality over the course of this championship where everyone

involved both on and off the competition arena will at all times compete or

participate in the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play as well as take the

opportunity to set personal goals for future achievements in school sport.

I would like to thank Athletics Victoria, I would like to acknowledge the work of

School Sport Victoria’s Division and Region Coordinators who have organised

the interschool track & field program up until this level.

A special thank you to the students from Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School &

Frankston High School who are assisting with the running of today’s event, as

well as parents, officials and volunteers that do so much to support Secondary

State Track and Field Championships. Without your support, the ability to

compete at outstanding events like this would not be possible.

I would also like to acknowledge all the teachers in our schools who provide

sporting opportunities for children. Without their commitment events such as

today’s finals would not be possible. On behalf of School Sport Victoria I wish

everyone good luck and trust that the memories of competing at the School

Sport Victoria Track & Field Championships 2018 will remain with you for years

to come.

Enabling Victorian Students to Access SSV Competition Pathways

The Sports ExcellenceScholarship Fund.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXCELLENCE

Each year 900 students compete at the School Sport Australia National Championships as members of Team Vic. Each of these students has excelled at their sport, resulting in them being chosen to represent Victoria in a school sport state team.

While all young people selected for Team Vic have the talent and commitment to succeed, not all have the funds or support to take up the opportunity. To eliminate this barrier to participation, SSV has established the Sports Excellence Scholarship Fund. Scholarships are awarded to help support Victorian students from low socio-economic, indigenous or rural and regional backgrounds.

Participating in sport provides young people with social, cultural and educational opportunities, encouraging healthy lifestyles, the development of life skills and lifelong friendships. For those from disadvantaged backgrounds, these benefits can be far reaching.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXCELLENCE

‘’The highlights for me was playing against all the other states and seeing great talent across Australia. I gained new skills from the tournament and different knowledge of the game. My advice to other sporting participants competing in a national tournament is to go hard, gain new friendships, learn as much as you can and no matter what happens do your best and be proud of yourself... and never give up.’’ Jenny, (Team Vic player)

‘’Attending the national championships was a fabulous experience for both Geoff and myself. Receiving the extra financial support made things a lot easier. It was fantastic to see the enjoyment that Geoff experienced from representing his state and being a part of a team. I believe it has really helped Geoff to develop his leadership skills and his ability to work in a team situation. Thank you for making this scholarship available” Nikki (Parent)

Previous Team Vic athletes include; Gary Ablett Jnr, Linley Frame, Steve Hooker, Chris Judd, Nicole Livingstone, Gary Lyon, Sharelle McMahon and Kyle Vander-Kuyp.

“TEAM VIC”

www.ssv.vic.edu.au Supporting School Sport Victoria students.

Would you like to support highly talented young people, selected to represent Victoria in sport, whose financial circumstances would otherwise prevent them from doing so?

The Sports Excellence Scholarship Fund has been created to support Victorian students who have the proven talent to be selected for a School Sport Australia National Championship, but do not have the funds to take up the opportunity.

These young people may come from low socio-economic, indigenous and/or rural backgrounds. This endowment fund will provide resources in perpetuity to support these young people’s talent and aspirations.

We are seeking support from individuals who believe in supporting young people with talent, to make a tax deductible contribution, which will create a legacy for generations to come.

The SESF has its own, independent Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status and as such all donations are tax deductible
