TYPES OF DEPOSITIONAL ENVIRONMENT

•Continental •Glacial •Fluvial •Deserts •Shallow and marginal marine •Deltaic •Fluvial Dominated •Wave Dominated •Tide Dominated•Deep marine •Deep marine fan facies

5

FLUVIAL DEPOSITIONAL ENVIRONMENT

Channel fill Floodplain Levee Crevasse splay

6

FLUVIAL PLATFORMS

7

DESERT DEPOSITIONAL ENVIRONMENT

•Aeolian blown sands •Ephemeral lakes/rivers •Alluvial fans

8

SHALLOW MARGINAL MARINE ENVIRONMENT

Fluvial-dominated delta sub-environments

•Low wave and tide energy •Decrease of velocity at the sea front •Mouth bar – distributive pattern •Decrease grains size with depth

9

SHALLOW MARGINAL MARINE ENVIRONMENT

Wave-dominated delta sub-environments •High wave energy•Channel do not prograde •Sandy coastal bars •Well-sorted sand

10

SHALLOW MARGINAL MARINE ENVIRONMENT

Tide-dominated delta sub-environments

•High tidal range •Channel affected by tides •Tidal sandy bars •Tidal indicators

11

DEEP MARINE ENVIRONMENT

Deep-marine submarine fan facies association

•Canyon – bypass •Proximal fan •Channel fairways •Levees •Lobes •Distal fan •Frontal splays •Hemipelagic/pelagic deposits

IMPORTANCE OF STUDY OF THESE ENVIRONMENT

Knowledge of depositional environments is important for:

Reconstructing earth history

Understanding earth processes

Helping humans survive and prosper

Geologists use analyses of depositional environments to help locate, inside the earth, sources of oil, coal, natural gas, deposits of valuable metals/minerals/rocks, and aquifers, which are useable sources of groundwater.
