Exultate JubilateKirsti Ottem Langeland
Our poster art was created by artist KirstiOttem Langeland who lives in Trondheim, near the center of Norway.
Kirsti describes herself as “tall, periodicallycreative, capricious, depressive andhumorous.” In her words, “I tend to lapseinto reveries, melancholy and obsessions. Ican't dance, I’m a terrible cook and I’m notgood at making decisions.” Her heart liesin art and she owns over 800 CDs. She ismarried and has a stepdaughter.
She was inspired to draw Exultate Jubilatewhile listening to Cecelia Bartoli’sinterpretation of Mozart aria’s. Theoriginal was created in ink, pencil, crayons, and gold and silver paint.

H andel’s “Coronation Anthem, No. 3” was written for the coronation of King GeorgeII and Queen Caroline, which took place on October 11, 1727 (so this weekendmarks the 275th anniversary of this event; however, see note below). Handel has
just been granted British citizenship that same year; his English was not very good, so the wordinghe chose was sometimes a little amusing. But the music is wonderfully regal; it was written wellbefore the Messiah, but you can hear places in it that presage that great work. Our performancefeatures solos by Jill Price and Jan Brandt in this work. This is our March.
Brahms’ “Liebeslieder Waltzes” (Lovesong Waltzes), published in 1866, is a collection of 18 waltzesfor chorus and soloists. The text consists of poems that were translations and imitations of Russian,Polish, and Magyar folk poetry. Soloists in this work will be Gary Bingham and Mary Donohoe. Wewill be accompanied by four-hand piano, performed by Caroline Germain and Laura McMichael. Wefeature the talents of our Accompanist Caroline Germain (formerly Hilty-Jones) and Pianist/AltoLaura McMichael in 4 hand piano throughout.
Although Morten Lauridsen composed “Les Chansons des Roses” in 1993, the text for the musiccomes from a selection of the Austrian poet Ranier Maria Rilke, who wrote over 400 poems inFrench. Lauridsen, who is now regarded as one of the premier contemporary composers of choralmusic, was born in Colfax in 1943 and attended Whitman College; he currently is Chair of theDepartment of Composition at the University of Southern California and has been composer-in-residence of the Los Angles Master Chorale since 1994.
We will close with some settings of traditional American songs by Aaron Copland. These includethe amusing “I Bought Me a Cat”; “Long Time Ago,” a very beautiful, but sad piece; “The Boatman’sDance,” a minstrel song about flatboats on the Ohio River; and “Ching-A-Ring-Chaw,” anotherminstrel song about going to heaven. Steve Swannack sings a solo as the boatman, while BarbaraRose and George LaBar have solos in “I Bought Me a Cat.”
Footnote:
In September 1752, the British Empire changed to the “New Style” Gregorian Calendar. September2, 1752 was followed immediately by September 14, 1752. The public was incensed over losing 12days, but it was the only way to put the calendar back in sync with the solar year. So the 275thanniversary of an event occurring in 1727 is only approximate.
