Dear St. Thomas Aquinas Community,

St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School is now embarking on its 31st year of operation. The excitement of the beginning of a new school year, the welcoming of a new senior class, and all our other first-time students to St. Thomas Aquinas, as well as all our returning students, is always a thrill. I am so excited to be a part of this great school. My first couple of months in the Hammond area have been so wonderful. I can say great things about how I have been welcomed. From the bottom of my heart, that I am now a Falcon and very proud of it.

Truly wonderful things are happening here at St. Thomas Aquinas. We encourage all classes to consider a reunion during our Homecoming Weekend (October 13, 2017). Our Advancement Office will be most happy to assist any and all classes in getting reunion plans together. Please consider this your “personal” invitation to come by your school and give us the opportunity of showing you and your family around STA’s wonderful campus! Our students and staff pray for our benefactors and alumni at all our school masses, and we will certainly continue. We are thankful for each and every one of you. You are not forgotten! May God Bless and keep each one of you in the palm of His hands.

Yours in Christ, Pat Sanguinetti Principal

The St.Thomas Aquinas website www.stafalcons.org has a brand new look and greatly improved functionality. It is mobile device and tablet friendly, interactive, offers the most up to date calendar and events information, and celebrates the accomplishments and activities of our students as they happen. If you are looking for information about STA, the website is exactly where you want to go.

We continue to examine and evaluate the effectiveness of the way we deliver news and information to parents, alumni, potential families and the community at large. With the reality that every year people are getting more of their news and information electronically, St. Thomas Aquinas is delivering more of its news in that same way. While The Flame will remain a staple of our communication, some of our more time-sensitive pieces will be covered via our website and social media. All you need to do to keep up with STA is: visit the website, like us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter and Instagram. Of course, we still hope you’ll enjoy The Flame when it arrives at your home. Please send all address changes to [email protected].

The Veritas Flame has been a symbol of St. Thomas Aquinas since the doors first opened in 1986. The Veritas Flame continues to be the reason for our existence by helping to educate our students to find “the truth” in their Catholic lives. We must continue to Ignite, Invest and Invoke our community to assist us in advancing St. Thomas Aquinas Regional Catholic High School to be the very best it can be.

Dear Friends and Families of St. Thomas Aquinas High School,

As I begin to consider writing this letter for the Annual Appeal, I find myself reflecting on my own time as a student and teacher in a Catholic High School, and as a parent of three alumni of STA. One word that keeps floating back to me was the world challenge. We all face challenges in our daily lives and our school is no different.

STA has faced and overcome many challenges and we continue to face many today as we evolve and grow. While we were able to build a fantastic new building with your generosity in our Capital Campaign Drive, our original building is nearly 30 years old and in constant need of regular maintenance. We face the challenge of making a quality Catholic education affordable for many worthy and deserving families in our community. We want to continue to thrive and help guide our students to be brighter and well-rounded Christians in an ever changing world. With your help, we can meet these challenges head on and together overcome them.

Our mission at St. Thomas Aquinas is to teach Gospel values in an environment of academic excellence that fosters the development of the whole person in a Catholic-Christian Community. Everyday at St. Thomas we are blessed to witness the impact that a single action can have on our students or on our entire school community.

One gesture of kindness can in turn, inspires the generosity from many.

The Power of One: The Impact of Many.

This holds true for the Annual Appeal, which I hope will become the cornerstone of our schools fundraising efforts, allowing us to meet the many challenges that face our school community. We hope to update our original building, and we would love to be able to bridge the gap between tuition expenses and the actual cost to educate each student. The funds raised through the annual appeal are critical for the school to maintain a balanced budget without raising tuition. This year I am calling on all of you to take part in the challenge as we continue to provide a superior and valued catholic education in Tangipahoa Parish. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, is a sign of your confidence in our mission to continue to inspire confident, compassionate, independent, and creative Christian leaders who will go out and change our world for the better.

The Power of one: The Impact of Many.

Yours always in Christ, Grace Gambel “Our Family, Our School”

The measure of your own free will offering should be in proportion to the blessing the Lord has bestowed on you.

FALCON FEST

This year the second annual Falcon Fest was held on April 1st. The night was a great success with a net profit of close to $60,000. The night included both silent and live auctions, a kids corner, food from over 20 local restaurants, and dancing under the stars to the music of the Boogie All Stars. Money raised that evening will go into both the school’s operating budget and into our tuition assistance program. Mark your calendars for the 2018 Falcon Fest-March 24th!

The Falcon Fest requires months of planning and a committee of dedicated parents. Volunteers, old and new, are always needed, so please keep your eyes peeled for meeting notices and announcements about auction work days

We once again extend our thanks to all the volunteers, students, faculty, parents and friends of St. Thomas who have played a vital part in the growth of this great evening.

FALCON FEST SPONSORS

We are grateful to the following businesses and families for sponsoring the 2017 Falcon Fest. Our success in putting on an event of this size is due in large part to their generous support. JOY UNITES PRO LIFE GENERATION

The Sacred Scriptures call us to be “doers of the word and not hearers only. (For) faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead” (James 1:22, 2:17). Jesus himself directs us to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations….teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you…”

(Mt 28:19-20). Truly, our life in Christ is a life of active witness to the Gospel.

Throughout the month of January, the STA community celebrated the sacredness of human life from conception until natural death. Students participated in on-campus activities which were scheduled throughout the month.

Co-Campus Ministers Mrs. Grace Gambel and Coach Cole Catalano, along with the assistant principal, Mrs. Alicia McDaniel and a group 40 students and chaperones headed for Washington, DC to participate in the 45th annual March for Life. The students and chaperones attended the March for Life rally prior to the march and were inspired by the words of Vice President, Mike Pence, Counselor to the President, Kellyanne Conway, and Cardinal Timothy Dolan. They then marched, in peaceful Solidarity with thousands of people from throughout the United States and around the world in protest of legalized abortion. Thank you to the Knights of Columbus Council and the Holy Ghost Catholic Church congregation for their continued support and generosity in assisting us with this endeavor.

In 2000, the Advancement Office began a capital campaign to meet the growing and evolving needs of the students and faculty of St. Thomas Aquinas. The goal of the Capital Campaign was to enhance the high standards of STA education in all areas of student life including technology, academics, athletics, fine arts and student activities. Due to the overwhelming generosity of our families and friends, the first major campaign since the opening of the school in 1986 was a success and many of the desired improvements became a reality.

Our campus now has a new educational building which houses 2 state of the art science labs, 16 classrooms, the counseling and dean of students offices, student restrooms, a faculty lounge and a classroom which has a retractable wall, allowing an extremely large meeting room. We also converted the library into a technology center, which includes a broadcasting lab. We completed the construction of a stand alone art building and our athletic facilities have also been upgraded. We made many enhancements to the Pete Valenti field, including the installing lights, bleachers, a jumbotron scoreboard, and a new press box. Austin Brooks baseball field was converted to a state-of-the-art turf field and we have built the Mike Daruse softball field which is the only turf softball high school field in Tangipohoa Parish.
