Japan’s high savings rate is a drag on theJapanese economy and on the rest of the worldas well. For decades this high savings patternprovided inexpensive investment funds tobusinesses, which helped spur Japan’s higheconomic growth. But there is a downside to ahigh savings pattern because it results in thescarcity of consumer loans. Further, a highsavings rate reduces the value of the yen onthe international market. This expands Japan’strade surplus, which in turn causesprotectionist pressures in other countries, making it difficult for Japan to sell itsproducts abroad. So, while the high savingsrate may have been seen as a good thing forthe Japanese economy at one point, in the longrun it has been proven to have numerousnegative effects.
