Introduction

In the 1450 AD, Germen citizen Gutenberg was thefirst person who invented the printing machine. Hewas a black smith and his invention brought arevolution in the communication world. TheNewspaper established based on the revolution. Itis passing near about 400 years through manyobstacle and challenges and it become as a fourthpillar of the democratic world.

Bangladesh is country of 160 million people (ref:www.bbs.gov.bd). This developing country got freedomin 1971 from the anarchism of Pakistan. Afterpassing 41 years of independence as ensuring theother sector’s development, Bangladesh hasestablished itself as a country of free flow ofinformation and a country of pluralistic media. Forthat reason Bangladesh now have 557 dailynewspapers, almost 25 television channels, 7 radiosand 14 community radios to ensure the right toinformation of the mass. Among television channels,we have four 24 hour news based television channels(www.moi.gov.bd). Even two decades earlier Bangladeshipeople had to depend on foreign media sources toknow the information. A lot of Bangla dailynewspaper gives more attention their entertainmentpage. People want to read this page too.

So, Media has a huge responsibility to develop theentertainment news for better contribution in ourcountry. But media of our country do not publishproper and sufficient content for the developmentof our entertainment news.

That is why this report is based on this issue thatthe lack of publishing the sufficient and properentertainment news in daily Bangla newspapers.

Background :

Everyday newspaper readers spend some times and look over every page. Each reader gives more attention on the entertainment news segment. Peoplewant to know about celebrity news updates. But in last few months As observed, many Bangladeshi entertainment news seeker or reader complains abouttoo much foreign celebrity news being published than local celebrity news and some Facebook posts also.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The reality of today’s Bangla Newspaper(Entertainment news) is unacceptable. Becausemostly they produce Bollywood & Hollywood industrybased news than our mainstream entertainers. Weneed to give priority to our local industry (stage,TV, cinema) news in Bangla newspaper.

For this reasons the project also seeks someimportant objectives that are given bellow-

To find out the quantity of Entertainment news

in daily Bangla newspaper.

To investigate the entertainment news treatment

tendency of the daily entertainment news.

Hypothesis @Daffodil International University

2

@Daffodil International University2

Bangladeshi Bangla newspapers are giving need to more attention in local celebrity news than Hollywood or Bollywood celebrity news.

Basic Research Question:

1. Is it true, Bangladeshi Bangla newspapers are need to giving more attention in local celebrity than Hollywood or Bollywood celebrity?

Previous research

I tried to find out the related type of research in

Bangladesh. However, I could not manage any

previous research works on this topic; especially

from Bangladeshi perspective. So it is very

difficult to complete my thesis work and also the

problems had to face to continue thesis literature

review part as well. So, for this reason collected

some data from international research article and

tried to relate.

METHODOLOGY

The study has been conducted applying ‘contentanalysis’ method. The Content analysis is ascholarly approach of studying the content ofcommunication materials and content. The essence ofthe content analysis lies in the statement ofLasswell and Krippendorff. Lasswell, through his famousdefinition of communication, framed the base of thecontent analysis by saying: “Who says what, towhom, why, to what extent and with what effect?”

Sampling for Content Analysis:

Population:

National Dailies of Bangladeshi newspapers publishin Bangla language.

Sample:

One Month

Usually this type of research is very rare inBangladesh. So for content analysis part Then Idivided my framing like (Bollywood, Hollywood,Stage, TV, Cinema, Music news).

In this study analyzed news treatment and image aswell.

And i choose four Bangla Daily Newspaper forcirculation.

Daily Prothom alo : Prothom Alo was founded on 4November 1998. From press facilities located inDhaka, Chittagong and Bogra, around 5,32,000 copies(as of September ‘13) are circulated each day.According to National Media Survey 2012. MatiurRahman has been the editor of the newspaper sinceits founding in 1998.

Daily iitefaq : The Ittefaq was first published asa weekly paper on December 24, 1953 by MaulanaAbdul Hamid Khan Bhasani and Yar Mohammad Khan. Itis one of the most circulated newspapers in

@Daffodil International University5

Bangladesh. This newspaper is printed by IttefaqGroup of Publications Limited

Daily Samakal : Samakal started publishing in 31May 2005. As of 2007, the circulation of Samakal isaround 200,000.

Golam Sarwar, a famous journalist, serves here asEditor.

Daily kaler kantho : Kaler Kantho (Daily Voice ofTime") is one of the most popular Bengalinewspapers in Bangladesh.

It was founded by popular Bangladeshi journalistAbed Khan and first published in Dhaka on 10January 2010. Mr. Khan also acted as its firsteditor; he would resign in June 2011. Imdadul HaqMilon is now its present editor.

Literature Review:

Had to work by framing the news, which is firstreadable document for this thesis paper. As mytopic is related to research, searched Google forreading literary pieces

According to Academia.edu, Bangladesh has passedthrough three stages of shifting in media landscape. As Haque (2011) explained (62), the firstwas initiated by the politicians, with the mediabeing used as the voice of political parties or forserving political agendas though, for Bangladesh,it was serving the agendas of people also as thecountry was fighting for rights against WestPakistan central government in 1960s. With time,questions were raised against biased and politicaljournalism and there was advocacy for objective andethical journalism. Worldwide, behind the

@Daffodil International University 6

introduction of objective journalism, there was acontribution of journalism schools. Today is theage of corporate-owned journalism, a contemporaryreality that is both global and local. There aredifferences in the objective and style of thesethree kinds of journalism.

The ‘Daily Ittefaq’ and The Daily Sangbad, two Bangladailies established in the Pakistan era, are thelast two representatives of the first phase ofjournalism (political journalism), though they cannow be identified as doing journalism of the secondphase (objective journalism). These two newspapersplayed historical roles in the different periods ofthe independence movement. ‘Bangladesh Betar’ and‘Bangladesh Television’ were also involved in differenthistorical moments of the nation. The existence of‘Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra’ was transient but it was avery unprecedented radical media during theLiberation War in 1971.

Other than a few of these media, all print or broadcast, 63 outlets appeared in the last two decades.

@Daffodil International University7

It is to be noted that these two decades are the age of globalization based on the idea of a free market economy after the fall of communism. As a result, an influence of capitalist globalization isfelt in the media institutions. On the other hand, in the expanding capitalist activities driven by the globalization process, media remained as part of that process. The existing media situation around the globe as well as in Bangladesh is both the cause and effect of globalization.

Content analysis is a research tool used todetermine the presence of certain words or conceptswithin texts or sets of texts. Researchers quantifyand analyze the presence, meanings andrelationships of such words and concepts, then makeinferences about the messages within the texts, thewriter(s), the audience, and even the culture andtime of which these are a part. According to Weber(1989), Content Analysis is any research techniquefor making inferences by systematically andobjectively identifying specified characteristicswithin text.

Content Analysis:

Cause of Selection Four Daily Bangla Bangladeshi newspapers for their good circulation in the market. And the newspaper name is (‘Daily Prothom Alo’,‘Daily Ittefaq’, ‘Daily samakal’ & ‘Daily Kaler Kantho’).

Observe 28 days their entertainment page and try tofind out the content analysis. Like the publishing entertainment news article (number of total word counting, image & also focusing frame like local news or Hollywood or Bollywood news). And what kind of news give news treatment & also published image, i count publishing word and also check the focus point of news category.

DATA ANALYSIS

According to the four newspaper One monthentertainment page content, I find out some point.Firstly, Mostly newspaper entertainment page liketo focus Bollywood & Hollywood frame.

After evaluating the result of these researchfindings it is clear that The ‘Daily Prothom Alo’coverage both side. Like local celebrity news &Bollywood Hollywood news. Another side The ‘DailyIttefaq’ does not to focus Stage news. Maximum timethey are covering Bollywood, Hollywood, Local Tv &Film celebrity news.

News coverage of such Bollywood news in our countryis reported too much by The ‘Daily Ittefaq’ & ‘Dailysamakal’. We know every newspaper entertainment page

not focus point. But now a days, all kind of peoplewant to read and search local celebrity news.Newspaper man introduce Foreign celebrity news butmost of the time we see give poor attention aboutour stage and music news .

@Daffodil International University22

Just focusing Foreign Entertainment news &Dhallywood News also important for reader but notneglect also local stage drama, music & otherscultural news.

There news article according to 4 daily newspaperBollywood & Hollywood news published in 28 days-

Word count sample :

Newspaper Total Word countPercentage

Daily Prothom Alo 1299 18 %

Daily kaler kantho 182225 %

Daily Samakal 2024 27 %

Daily Ittefaq 313630%

Four newspaper sample 8281100%

But everyone not maintains same coverage orpublished stage or music (Local) news. Some timethey give special priority for Bollywood &Hollywood news than local celebrity news. ‘The DailySamakal’, gives more coverage to the TV & local Filmnews than international (Bollywood & Hollywood)news. But they give more attention to internationalcelebrity news image. The Publishing image size isfact cause this newspaper’s entertainment pagecovers half page. So word & image is veryimportant.

This study tries to examine to what extent themainstream newspapers in Bangladeshi News frame.This way media coverage every month news &published day by day. This study examines to themajor four daily newspaper entertainment pagecoverage patterns.

On the other extreme, they did not pay muchattention on reporting this issue in terms of theentertainment related article. I think it alsoproved.

Recommendation:

It is visible from the study that the BangladeshiBangla newspaper covered foreign celebrity news andalso local celebrity news. But some time ‘Daily Ittefaq’& ‘Daily samakal’& Others newspaper published moreforeign celebrity news.

The mass people have little interests in foreigncelebrity news than local celebrity news. Somecorporate houses were found trying to establishinternational celebrity news than local celebritynews for their own policy.

But i think local stage news need to give moreattention. Cause in my research show that stage &music news gives less important in daily banglanewspaper entertainment page. Stage create a strong

artist in Bangladesh for Tv & Film sector. Theymake a good artist by grooming theatre workshop andalso regular practice.

So why we ignore in our daily entertainment pagefor publishing stage news. Also in music news,music industry is a asset for any country. Ourdaily bangla newspaper entertainment page in chargeor editor should focus more music news. But wenever maintain it.

So, Newspaper editor or entertainment page editorshould take initiatives for coverage giving moreattention on local celebrities news not onlydhallywood, bollywood also stage, music and othersite.

CONCLUSION

The research work was conducted within one month.To analyze the content of the sample, the contentanalysis method has been applied. The research haslots of limitations and has huge opportunities toexpand and get most accuracy if given enough timeparameter.

As this is a student work, the budget was verylimited and therefore the scope for using otheranalyzing techniques was minimal. However, thiscontent analysis still provides a glimpse of thescenario of the existing practice of most popularBangla National Dailies.
