With a little of firewood Now I commemorateI was its birds,
Lumberjacks
And the burners in its hearth
Now and with a little of firewood I’m trying to commemorate these three The anniversary of a colorful bird landed on a branch in front of me then flew
The anniversary of a lizard on a rock I wished if I only lain near it
Anniversary of fruits that I thought hearts
And hearts that I thought fruits and gleaned them
Till now I don’t know what to do
With the blood of these branches
With a little of the remaining firewood in my heart
I light a cigarette
And into its smoke I see my companions
Who died drunkenly on roads
Who crossed the river in a moment and led the arid away to be a companion in their
Roaming
Who riveted imaginations in their veins, may the bored blood in their arteries Wouldn’t stay alone in the long night
My companions
Who have roads in their eyes
And trains
Don’t stop in a station
Who left the keys inside, shut the door and wentStrange fish was born in their sight seas
And hooks
They threw them
And hunted their eyes
I light a cigarette
From the remaining firewood of far past’s forests
And try to conceal below its smoke
And hide with me uncountable dead people
Under a cigarette’s smoke I hide dead people and others alive to not die
Trying to dismiss death by smoke.
With the remaining firewood
With the remaining smoke
I commemorate with people and trees
Cuddled together
And became smoke.
A Few of firewood

Everyday Gamal Alkassas Translated by Entisar Dolib
Everyday, I put my heart on the table
I share it, fairly between my beloved ones
As well as some enemies that were spoiled by my love
My little one argued about the allotment
He drew a black apple in his notebook
And two lines possessed by bullets
And yelled laughing
It's my heart, dad
look for your heart on another table
I am the God father
There is no stone in my hand
No Pebble
Everyday I survive
Everyday they call me that name
And I have to remember
That I woke up this morning,
That I talked for more than two minutes
On the phone,
That I opened the balcony for scraps of light
I picture the night as cocoa butter,
Playing cards or a naive meowing
That I screamed
"A stray ship is ought to be in the soup bowl"
Everyday I live
Everyday..on the same seat
Counting the calories in the poem's body
Fixing the size of my pants
So I would look elegant before God
Everyday I remember
And I smile to my messy bed
For half of a somnolent sentence
O man, who kidnapped the rose
Are you free
Is this your fragile privilege
What have you done in this life
All these years
Waiting for the fault to mature,
Right on time
Or to fall like a mortal butterfly
From God's tree
If you were little
If you didn't grow those fingers
If you stayed as a speculation in a dream
I laugh
When a dog jumps on your shadow
And fantasize your head as a bowl of soup
Or when you confuse the night's intestine
with two lines of poetry
Which you claim that you've spent half of
Your life
Placing them on the shelf

Door
Alamin Mazrui
Either you go
Through this door
Or you don't.
If you go through
There's a danger
Of forgetting your name.
That's the problem.
Everything looks at you twice
Ashamed, you look away,
You let it happen.
You can't look for a fight.
If you don't go through
Perhaps you'll have a good life.
You'll defend your ideals
You'll carry on with your work
You'll die a hero in your country
But perhaps many things will pass you by
You'll be blind to many things
At what cost? I don't know.
The door itself
Can't make your decision
It's just a door!

Orphans rejoice at anything
Look at me!
I am pleased if you say good morning with an extra smile
I am happy when almond flowers cover the windshields of cars
Dreams, constellations, stars
And grandmothers' salty prayers
Make me happy
Orphans rejoice at anything
The speech of teachers
The hot cacao
The hands of strangers touching the hair
The hug
Orphans cherish love
They thank a lot
They apologize a lot
They bring complex presents
That contain scarves weaved with sleepless
Nights, dried flowers, and long dramatic letters
All the tales of orphans are final
Parentless, too
And might have grievous endings
Orphans are very poor
Very opportunists they are
Look at me!
Orphans Rejoice at Anything

Five Ways to Kill a Man Edwin Brock
There are many cumbersome ways to kill a man
You can make him carry a plank of wood
To the top of a hill and nail him to it. To do this
Properly you require a crowd of people
Wearing sandals, a cock that crows, a cloak
To dissect, a sponge, some vinegar and one
Man to hammer the nails home
Or you can take a length of steel
Shaped and chased in a traditional way
And attempt to pierce the metal cage he wears
But for this you need white horses
English trees, men with bows and arrows
At least two flags, a prince, and a
Castle to hold your banquet in
Dispensing with nobility, you may, if the wind
Allows, blow gas at him. But then you need
A mile of mud sliced through with ditches
Not to mention black boots, bomb craters
More mud, a plague of rats, a dozen songs
And some round hats made of steel
In an age of aeroplanes, you may fly
Miles above your victim and dispose of him by
Pressing one small switch. All you then
Require is an ocean to separate you, two
Systems of government, a nation's scientists
Several factories, a psychopath and
land that no-one needs for several years
These are, as I began, cumbersome ways
To kill a man. Simpler, direct, and much more neat
Is to see that he is living somewhere in the middle
Of the twentieth century, and leave him there

At night
I bring tale’s head
And wipe my fear
From its head
Excusing pallor
And dwelling in color’s point
Neither a color stays alone
Nor a color at night looks out
For my shyness
When tales hide behind faces
At night
I bring tale’s head
His eyes generalize me
And my eyes are lost on a sedan
From candles’ illusion
And tale’s body
Read its verses
In awe
Noticing a face hanged
From its face with return
And didn’t appear
I read nectar’s book on flowers
And in insomnia’s raving
Road’s branch budded
Fields came
And seasons returned
To ask me for my sickle
I’m the quiet, rebel
Roamer, romantic, asleep
In the wound
Between seductions you walk without a head
And head between bleeding scented with axe,
And the axe
In a balcony
Spreads salt
From a skylight in sand
On spring
Scared from my spring
I knew the eyes of ill-fated visions by your eyes
And waves
Perfumed from your captivating soul
A hug rendered us in the tenth heaven
It is the time
When your perfume increases
He listened to it
Then to me
And rolled my spindle

The Curtains Najib Mobarek
Translated by Entisar Dolib
After all these years,
I am still diffident of the curtains
I still see a curtain in every eye,
An eye behind it, blaming me,
A street behind it or a dark alley
Or
A hypothetical net of two stones
Every eye is a harsh neighbor
Striking with whatever is within reach
In the toughest and the most decayed moments

Grandfather Says
AI Ogawa A translation by Youssef Elharrak
"Sit in my hand."
I'm ten.
I can't see him,
But I hear him breathing in the dark.
It's after dinner playtime.
We're outside,
Hidden by trees and shrubbery.
He calls it hide-and-seek,
But only my little sister seeks us
As we hide
And she can't find us,
As grandfather picks me up
And rubs his hands between my legs.
I only feel a vague stirring
At the edge of my consciousness.
I don't know what it is,
But I like it.
It gives me pleasure
That I can't identify.
It's not like eating candy,
But it's just as bad,
Because I had to lie to grandmother
When she asked,
"What do you do out there?"
"Where?" I answered.
Then I said, "Oh, play hide-and-seek."
And he said,
"That's old enough to know."
She looked hard at me,
Then she said, "That was the last time.
I'm stopping that game."
So it ended and I forgot.
Ten years passed, thirty-five,
When I began to reconstruct the past.
When I asked myself
Why I was attracted to men who disgusted me
I traveled back through time
To the dark and heavy breathing part of my life
I thought was gone,
But it had only sunk from view
Into the quicksand of my mind.
It was pulling me down
And there I found grandfather waiting,
His hand outstretched to lift me up,
Naked and wet
Where he rubbed me.
"I'll do anything for you," he whispered,
"But let you go."
And I cried, "Yes," then "No."
"I don't understand how you can do this to me.
I'm only ten years old,"

To love me,

And find me the next day

And a poem freed
From the wax’s captivity

I don't know how many souls I have...
Fernando Pessoa
I’ve changed at every moment.
I always feel like a stranger.
I’ve never seen or found myself.
From being so much, I have only soul.
A man who has soul has no calm.
A man who sees is just what he sees.
A man who feels is not who he is.
Attentive to what I am and see,
I become them and stop being I.
Each of my dreams and each desire
Belongs to whoever had it, not me.
I am my own landscape,
I watch myself journey -
Various, mobile, and alone.
Here where I am I can’t feel myself.
That’s why I read, as a stranger,
My being as if it were pages.
Not knowing what will come
And forgetting what has passed,
I note in the margin of my reading
What I thought I felt.
Rereading, I wonder: “Was that me? ”
God knows, because he wrote it.

Nietzsche throws us in a mouth of gold
To prepare pure lag- lips for speech
Letters don't say what it actually says
There is a such meaning is being broken
In meaning's reincarnation for a meaning
And always there is a side speech
Between things which spoke orally without lips
And always there is a side conflict
Between letters and lips
And sometimes there is a lust for poetry
So a poem mined by visions and pointed letters
Its vocal cords strut
Between features, instincts, shadow
And delusions repent in prophets’ tent
And a weaned rhetoric poem
Came searching for tenement in poets' tents
To which exile my exclusive madness takes me
And my face is a distorted copy of pain's wrinkles
Reducing seduction and practicing hypocrisy with the mirror
And the mirror exposes the rest of mute
A side conflict raged between my tongue and my mute

“Aisha”
Mohamed Choukri Translation by Anouar El Younssi
It’s very sad that Aisha has disappeared from our lives. Every evening we would meet up at Fuentes Café. Before she
reached thirty, she could no longer continue being a prostitute. Her physique significantly deteriorated at this relatively young
age; she looked skinny and pale; her teeth were disfigured and had plaque on them. Consequently, she was denied the joy of a
full smile. She would intentionally hide her laughs, bending her head down her chest. She started working as a maid for a café
owner called Antonio, but later on she became his mistress. There was nothing left in her that he could possibly be jealous of,
and the same goes for her. Antonio had gangrene in his leg, which caused him a lot of suffering. The pain deprived him of
enjoying the night sleep. The misery of life, thus, brought Aisha and Antonio together. Antonio’s late wife died in Tangier, and
his children got married in Spain. Correspondence between Antonio and his kids is reduced to a few letters he receives on certain
special occasions.
Fatima deals in prostitution to meet the demands of every day expenses. She is awaiting her future husband. She dreams
a lot, yet she doesn’t share these dreams with anybody. She trims her nails to bleeding. She is young, comely and humble. She
communicates only with her smiling eyes all the time; you won’t hear her voice except when she asks for or refuses something.
That day, Aisha bought a transistor radio. She was extremely happy. Living a miserable life, she rarely buys new things.
It’s possible that Antonio bought it for her, or maybe she saved some money to buy it. Nobody asked her, and she did not
mention how she had managed to afford it. Purchasing a transistor radio once it made its first appearance in the market is indeed
a privilege among us, the poor. We shared Aisha’s joy of having that important item. We touched and examined it as we wished.
Even some clients, walking by our table to enter or leave the café, would stop and congratulate us on our having a transistor
radio. We would ask Aisha to switch to other radio stations; she would happily satisfy our requests. She was our lady and we, her
guests. I thought she had never been as happy as she was that particular day.
That evening, Aliwa arrived; she was very distressed and felt dizzy. She bore the ills of those who drink all day long.
She ordered coffee and a glass of water and started cursing men. She had a bottle of vodka in her handbag. We started drinking
the vodka from one glass, hoping we would not be noticed. But some clients as well as Antonio took notice. They shared our joy
from afar with their smiles. I would feel fire in my chest while drinking my turn. We did not mix the vodka with any other liquid.
That was our habit when we wished to get high and drunk with only a small quantity.
As a result of her extreme joy, Aisha no longer kept her lips tight when she smiled. Most of her broken teeth displayed
the beauty of her ugliness that evening. She didn’t stoop when she laughed. She would raise her head up, and her flattened chest
would stretch forward as she coughed. She raised and lowered the volume of her transistor radio as she pleased. She would take
the radio close to her and then move it close to us.

the radio close to her and then move it close to us. The vodka bottle got empty. Fatima left with a client. Aliwa left the place,
half asleep and drunk; she was unable to walk properly. On the following day, we learned that she had had a quarrel with the
police and was taken to prison, where she would miss the sight of the sea, which she loved tremendously.
Aisha lived with Antonio in a small house. She would bring him food to the café. Every night, she would rush home
and wait for him so that they would stay up together. Normally, he would bring a bottle of wine home.
For the first time, Aisha was begging me to accompany her home. She was afraid that muggers might assault her and
steal her transistor radio. She did not say that openly, but I sensed it. I felt really exhausted then, and my body was too heavy for
me to move. When I showed hesitation to accompany her, she said farewell with very little joy. I felt so much regret after she
had left; I almost decided to drag myself and catch up with her in order to escort her home or wherever she wished to go.
With my heart longing for a walk in the old alleys, I went to Dar Lbaroud. I hadn’t been there for a walk for many
years. It was springtime. The voice of Oum Kalthoum singing reached my ears:
Anta fakirnii walla nassiinii … (Do you still remember me? Or have you forgotten me?)
I remembered the part of my childhood in the alleys of Tetouan. Boys in the small square would chase each other. Miserable-
looking women and young girls would loudly fill their buckets with water from the public fountain. I stood under a window
deeply immersed in my memories. ‘Choukri, what are you doing here?’
I raised my head and looked at the window. It was Bader. I hadn’t seen him for a while. The door opened by a thread pulled
from upstairs. I went upstairs. Neither of us knew where the other lived. We would either meet up at the cafés in Souk Dakhel or
by chance at a friend’s house to stay up for the night. Since I moved to the new part of the city, I had never seen him there. His
room was small. A bunch of personal photos of his were hung on the walls. Some photos featured his youth years, while others,
his middle age. On some photos still he was by himself; on others he had company. I found him drinking tea. In no time, he
brought an already-opened bottle of wine, which was almost full, and two small glasses. I caught sight of a middle-sized picture
put in a frame. I opened my eyes widely and thought: “Aisha! Aisha on a picture in Bader’s house! How could he know her?
Neither of them mentioned the other to me, and I’ve never seen him frequenting Fuentes Café.”
‘Mr. Bader!’
‘Yes!’
‘That picture.’
‘What’s wrong with the picture?’
We drank a toast and then Bader said:
‘I don’t know anything about that picture. A friend of mine brought it here, hung it up there, and later on immigrated to
France. He was shot dead while working as a guardian in a bar.’
‘He was murdered?’
‘He had a fight with a Frenchman and went too far beating him up. The Frenchman shot him dead that same night.’
‘Would you mind giving me this picture?’
‘Just take it; since poor Kennedy died, I don’t mind you taking it.’ And later he added: ‘Do you know her yourself?’
‘Yes, I do. Her name was Aisha. She died more than twenty years ago.’
‘Did she die, too? How?’
‘She bought a transistor radio, and that same night she stayed up with us at Café Fuentes until very late. On her way
back home, she was attacked by a drunken mugger, who tried to steal her transistor radio. She resisted and hit him on the head
with her radio. He then broke a bottle of wine on her head and stabbed her in the neck and the chest.’
Bader stood up and looked at the picture for a while as if he saw it for the first time. He sat down and said:
‘We, the poor, find it easy to kill each other.’
When I was about to get going, I asked him again if I could take the picture. He looked very sad and politely said:
‘Please, leave it in its place; that’s better. It will remind me of poor Kennedy more than any time before. He also led a
poor life in Tangier and died a poor man in France.
