On December 1, 2014, Our Lady’s Inn took a step in carrying out its capacity building plan-a plan designed to guide OLI in its responsiveness to the changing needs of and the ever increasing numbers of homeless pregnant women and children. For some time, additional space has been needed for program staff-those working most directly with the women and children residing at the Inn. Private space for counseling and case management activities has been very hard to come by, with offices housing multiple staff members. Private space is critical for effective one on one meetings between professional program staff and each woman. Coupled with the

program space need, has been the need to have space to allow for expansion on the administrative team-most particularly to add another member to the finance staff. So early in 2014, a search was undertaken to find a small office space for the administrative team, who when relocated would vacate a few offices at the Inn allowing for the much desired private program spaces.

Finding a central location between the two facilities-St. Louis City and Defiance in St. Charles County-was important. Securing a location on a bus route would have the added benefit of allowing for the expansion of the Aftercare Program to include a centrally located support center. A support center, where former residents, who are now active in OLI’s two year Aftercare Program may make an appointment to visit with an Aftercare Case Manager for ongoing support. Just such a location was identified, the space found and readied; and in December five staff members representing the Development and Finance teams relocated along with the Executive Director; and in January, an Aftercare Case Manager.

Located on the southeast corner of the intersection of Manchester Road and Brentwood Boulevard, Our Lady’s Inn now has a presence in St. Louis County, with easy access between both the city and the Defiance locations. Housed in the building owned by St. Louis Society for the Blind, Our Lady’s Inn has settled into a space on the second floor with several other non-profit agencies.

The Christmas holiday at the Inn was a joyful time for everyone! Decorated trees, festive lights, and nativity scenes all brightened the Inns with the spirit of Christmas. College students from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb once again gave up a week of their Christmas break, and spent it with us, preparing and serving meals, cleaning, organizing donations, hanging outside lights and working with the children. Santa paid a visit to each home with gifts for the children. In the city, he flew in on his sleigh and slipped in the back door to surprise the children. In Defiance, he rode in on a shiny red fire truck, with firefighters from the New Melle Fire Department as escorts. The children learned about the true meaning of Christmas, sang songs and were beyond excited. Moms picked out and wrapped gifts for their children and unborn babies at the “OLI Christmas Store”. Thank you to all who made this holiday a wonderful time for all of our families!

Christmas

We are intentional in offering our thanks to God for the blessings He bestowed upon Our Lady’s Inn during the past year. We give thanks for the generosity of our donors, who through their faithful support have seen to it that our mission continues into the 34th year of service to homeless pregnant women. We are grateful for the volunteers who gave of their time to undertake the work of the Inn- rolling up sleeves to cook, clean, paint, teach, plant gardens, entertain, clothe, babysit, answer phones, pack, file, fundraise, organize and pray. We could not get along without them! For those who advocate for our mission and for the rights of those we serve, for our partner agencies in their continued care of the homeless and for all those dedicated to ensuring that all children have the right to be born, we offer our deepest gratitude to God, our Father.

We have been blessed with a Board and staff of dedicated women and men, faithful to the mission and filled with loving concern for the families we serve. We are blessed by the women and children living at the Inn, who each day demonstrate courage and resilience; and help us to be better versions of ourselves.

We look forward to all that is in store for us in 2015 and invite you to continue to participate in our mission- providing pregnant women and their children shelter and hope for a new life through humble acts of love.

Gratefully,

from the executive director:

programsIn the fall of 2014, Our Lady’s Inn launched a 9-week pilot program at its St. Charles County location, entitled “Job Readiness: Paving a Path to a Better, Brighter Future”. The brain child of volunteer, Sue Weiss, who had been working with OLI clients on job coaching and assisting them to prepare resumes in their search for employment, “Job Readiness” was designed to help clients find a job that could be the first step to a better future. One of the most critical needs that each woman faces in her effort to be able to care for her growing family is to find the right job. Often, their work history is a series of part time positions and they need help to secure the job that could be the first step to a better future. Our Lady’s Inn has utilized several external job training programs at the Missouri Career

Center or Jobs for Life, but “Job Readiness: A Path to a Better, Brighter Future” is the first in-house program.

As she worked with OLI clients, it became clear to Sue that many had lost hope in finding the right job, or any decent job, and so a focus on motivation, information and tools was necessary to empower them to build a “better, brighter future” for themselves, by first helping them to believe in themselves and build positive self-esteem--to change their thinking from “IMPOSSIBLE” to “I’M POSSIBLE”; and secondly, to develop a clear plan of action for their future careers; for a goal without a plan is just a dream. “Think big, start small, but start” is one of the themes threaded throughout the program.

The Job Readiness program includes several motivational videos, discussions and wallet cards around the “I’m Possible” mantra and requires each woman to do multiple two-minute presentations as a way to build self-esteem and improve overall confidence and communication skills. Each woman is also required to complete several one on one coaching sessions with the instructor, have written a personal vision statement based on their key values, have completed a career assessment and have an updated resume completed. Finally, each woman learns how to write a cover letter, conduct a job search, follow up on the job search, interview effectively and learn behaviors on the job that separate those who fail and those who succeed.

Sue, a professional trainer and leadership coach consultant, began volunteering at Our Lady’s Inn in September 2013. She developed the curriculum for the Job Readiness program, teaches the weekly classes and personally mentors each participant. Her “students” have enjoyed great success in securing employment. The second session of “Job Readiness: Paving a Path to a Better, Brighter Future” concluded with a special graduation ceremony on February 2, 2015.

“I learned that following up with a phone call after I have sent my resume is helpful in getting an interview”

Tax payers may take advantage of these tax credits aimed at reducing their Missouri state tax liability. Donors gifting between $100 and $100,000 may claim the tax credit and receive a state income tax credit equal to 50% of their donation.
