Open Your Heart: A Catholic Women’s Bible Study
We invite you to join Opening Your Heart: The Starting Point,
a Bible study that will take you on an exciting journey closer to
the heart of God. A group of women from our parish began this
22lesson Bible study this past spring and found it to be an in-
credibly effective path to deep transformation of the heart. It’s
not too late to join! We will resume the virtual bimonthly
study on Monday, September, 21, 2020 @ 6:30pm via ZOOM.
No previous studies or Bible study experience is necessary.
You can participate safely from the comfort of your home!
All you need is a computer or tablet with an internet connection
that is capable of web conferencing via this link Zoom virtual
meeting (help navigating this technology is available). Also
needed is a study book which can be ordered through this link
from the Walking with Purpose program website: https://
shop.walkingwithpurpose.com/collections/studyguides/
products/opening yourheartstudyguide.
Interested in learning more? Check out h ttps://

at [email protected] with any questions you may have.
Want to join the study? Register by sending an email to Abby
Cahill at [email protected] to provide your email address
and contact info so we can send you the Zoom meeting ID/link
before our first meeting.
We welcome all women in the parish, regardless of age and

S 6, 2020
Welcome Back! . . .

So we’re inching toward reopening. I’m delighted to see so
many more people gaining the confidence to come back to
Mass. It kinda reminds me of the old Vaudeville skit made
famous by the Three Stooges: “Slowly I turn, step by step, inch
by inch . . .” It feels a lot like that’s the way we’re progressing
toward coming back fullforce: one stride at a time.

We’ve been open since June, and in these three months we’ve
been flirting with relaxing the strictures we’ve needed to stress
on folks returning. Some of these have proven positive, others
may need to tightened back up again. The past few weeks, for
instance, I’ve kept the fronts doors on Manning Street open as
well as the Cross Street door. Unfortunately, that’s not
working out very well: it’s becoming unmanageable to keep
track of who’s coming in and being able to bring them to seats
so as to ensure proper social distancing. This is especially
tricky now that we’re doing first Communions at Sunday Mass
through September; many of those joining our congregation
aren’t frequent worshippers with us, so they need to be guided
a bit more than those who’ve been coming since June. So,
unfortunately, I’m thinking we’re going to have to keep those
doors closed during Mass and only open them up afterwards
for folks to come in for a few moments of private prayer.

Much of the safe practices also are being disregarded. We still
need to maintain appropriate social distancing in the
Communion line and when entering and exiting. To make
things a bit clearer and more consistent, we’ll all exit from the
same door used to come in byon Cross Street.

I know this seems like a case of one step forward, two steps
back (well, maybe two steps forward and one step back). But
this also can be a practical reminder of the spiritual life: In our
own journey toward God, our progression in holiness, we often
make advances and then recede. There are times when we feel
spiritually strong and close to God; then there are other phases
of our life when we feel estranged from Godthe experience
of what’s called acedia. St. Ignatius of Loyola refers to this
cycle as spiritual consolation and spiritual desolation. So as we
negotiate this ballet of opening up our parish in baby steps,
inching forward then inching back, we should try to bear in
mind that life is a process of ebbs and flows. Hopefully, we
can appreciate God’s infinite patience with us a little better by
exercising patience with this processand maybe even learn
to be more patient with ourselves when we stumble from time
to time.

I know many are getting frustrated with the protocols we have
in place as safeguards against Covid19. But please remember
that there are just as many who are grateful for these
precautions and only feel comfortable joining us for Mass
because of these measures. As your pastor, I encourage you all
to put on the mind of Christ, who did not please Himself but
always sacrificed for the good of others. As St. Paul says:
“Each of us should please his neighbor for the good purpose of
building him up”; “Let each of you look not to your own
interests, but to the interests of others.”

I’m glad to see you all againI can’t tell you how much I’ve
missed you! May God continue to bless you all abundantly!

pouco a pouco chegaremos lá.

muitas vezes avançamos e outras vezes recuamos.

continue a abençoar abundantemente!
