Cool solutions for hot issuesThere are two major reasons why it is imperative to pay close attention to the fire protection solution in the buildings. The
first reason is obvious: high quality fire prevention provides the best safety guarantee for the people who use the building
and the environment that surrounds it. The second reason is more pragmatic: having high quality fire prevention severely
reduces the cost of insurance premiums. In Germany alone, around 150,000 fires a year cause damage worth more than 2
billion €. And insurance companies give discounts of up to 65% to public facilities and commercial buildings that install the
best stationary fire protection systems.
At Grundfos, we have more than 60 years of experience in pump applications. Read on to find out more about our fire pre-
vention solutions and be inspired to leave fire prevention to our experts.
The systems of choiceStationary fire protection systems provide the preferred way of protecting commercial buildings and public facilities. Most
of the stationary systems work with water, which is available in sufficient quantities almost everywhere and is an excel-
lent extinguishing medium. In the stationary protection systems, sprinkler systems distribute a fine spray of water over
a large area, which cools the fire seat and fights the fire. The water also absorbs released gases, soot, and other harmful
substances.
Grundfos has firepumps that fullfill the VdS standards – an internationally recognized standard of sprinkler systems. Our
fire pumps are also available on request with all other major international certifications.

Design and materialsSprinkler pumps are distribution pumps which pump water
through stationary sprinkler systems using water spray or
foam. They may only be put into operation in case of a fire
or for testing purposes. By way of a minimum requirement,
their castings must be manufactured from grey cast iron.
Impellers and their attachments, shafts, and shaft sleeves
must be made of non-rusting materials. To guarantee the
shortest possible repair times, all key functional compon-
ents must be replaceable using appropriate means at the
site of installation.
Characteristic curves, flow rate, head, NPSHLike any hydraulic system, fire extinguishing systems fea-
ture a performance range in which the operating points for
maximum and minimum pressure and for maximum and
minimum flow rate are defined. To ensure optimum cove-
rage of all points, the hydraulics in fire pumps are designed
to achieve a stable (+/- 5% of Hmax) and flat characteristic
curve. When pumping the approved flow rate, the 4.5 m
NPSH value must not exceed 5.5 m at 1.2 Qzul. Flow rates
and heads are determined and tested by the VdS in accor-
dance with DIN 1944 Accuracy Level III, taking into account
the VDI flow regulations contained in DIN 1952. The per-
formance data of pump and drive motor are stated in test
records and on the name plates.
Installation, commissioning, regular testingThe power supply for alarm and drive systems must feature
a redundant, uninterrupted design. Approved fire pumps
must only be fitted, commissioned, and serviced by certified
installation engineers. Operators of fire protection systems
must appoint a responsible person and a deputy. Routine
inspections, functional tests, and annual maintenance work
must be regularly carried out and the results recorded. The
insurance company must be informed if the system is taken
out of service for any reason.
Meetingthe demands
The Grundfos fire pump range includes quality pumps for every VdS basic range. In order to fully live up to the standards,
strictly defined requirements must be met regarding three areas:
•Designandmaterials
•Curves,flowrates,headsandNPSHcurves
•Testing,installationandcommissioning
For more details on the specific requirements, please contact your local Grundfos company. On the opposite page is an
illustration of a characteristic curve for a Grundfos fire pump.

Getting it rightTo ensure that you choose the right pump for your needs you have to determine two
things: 1) how much water will be needed for extinguishing purposes in case of a fire
and 2) what is the resistance that needs to be overcome when the water is pumped
through the pipe network. The diagram to the right indicates the appropriate pump for
your system at the point where the flow rate and the head intersect. Besides the stan-
dard sizes in the diagram, Grundfos also provides intermediate sizes or any individual
operating point on request as customised solutions. Simply ask the specialist in your
local Grundfos company for expert advice.

in your project from the beginning. A precise risk analysis and professional

adviser and your insurance company and you are on the right track to safety.
Step 2 – redundant systemsIf you want the very best fire prevention, step 2 is to use redundant fire protec-
tion systems. Redundant systems are equipped with two fire pumps that each
have the capacity to supply water to the connected sprinkler systems in case
of an emergency. That means that you are guaranteed the best possible safety
in every situation. Redundant systems double the protection and eliminate the
worries.
Step 3 – alternative drive motorsStep 3 is to integrate alternative drive motors in your system. They allow for a
more flexible system that is not dependent on two different electrical power
sources.
The ideal pump combination in redundant systems is an electrically-driven
pump combined with a diesel-driven pump.

Custom-madefire protection
At Grundfos, we love the challenge of customising new pump systems to match the specific needs of our client. One examp-
le is our systems with split base plate and separate control cabinet. We use this system when the space is tight or doors and
corridors are too narrow to bring through the traditional pump systems in which pumps, control cabinets, and manifold are
directly fitted to a single base plate. Whatever the challenge, we are ready to meet it.
