Functional Skills update
'although assessment of functional skills will be through a stand-alone test, at school level, that is the tip of a wider set of reforms that see functional skills incorporated into KS3 and KS4 programmes of study and more functional and applied approaches being reflected in "mainstream" English, maths and ICT GCSE. It is still the intention that from 2010, achieving level 2 functional skills will be necessary in order to achieve GCSE grades A*-C in those subjects.‘ – DCSF

Functional Skills Update• The mathematics pilot will be a stand alone
qualification taken alongside current Mathematics GCSE
• Functional skills standards are to be incorporated into revised specifications for GCSE for first teaching 2010
• Functional skills is an integral part of the new secondary curriculum for mathematics (KS3 and 4)
• It is the intention of QCA that functional skills will carry points post 2010
• There are 12 awarding bodies that can offer functional skills at the various levels (EL1, 2 and 3, Level 1 and 2)

Functional Skills update
• Assessment should be a minimum of 1 hour and a maximum of 3 hours
• Assessment must meet the QCA principles: task based examination or task based and exam question
• Learners must achieve a pass at level 2 in order to achieve GCSE A* - C in Mathematics
• The award will be offered 2 or 3 times per year, depending on the award body

The Importance of Mathematics
Mathematics equips pupils with uniquely powerful ways to describe, analyse and change the world. It can stimulate moments of pleasure and wonder for all pupils when they solve a problem for the first time, discover a more elegant solution, or notice hidden connections. Pupils who are functional in mathematics and financially capable are able to think independently in applied and abstract ways, and can reason, solve problems and assess risk
