he found a history ofM., written by a gentleman of the ooun-

. dergy, Bar. Davict p . Skid, father o4Justice Jfcty of the Supreme Court, and a]«of Dftvid wTand Oyros W. Field. This littlework, published at Httefleld, Mass., fifty, flre year» ago, <xnitained a portrait ol Mr.Be&rwiokl representing him as wearing theolffashion^<iueue,i»1»ile the portraitthe House gave a picture wi?» * e .at*nair, a different position from that giventhe old book. The resem>lanoe, hywevwas quite suffloent to convince Mr. Book-weH and1 others whose attention he called tothe subject that the nameless picture is thatof Theodore Sedgwiok, Speaker of the Sixthdouse. This discovery brings to lightanother, equally interesting, in regard tothe one Speaker the place for whose por-trait is still vacant. That Speaker was, asindicated above, Nathaniel Maoon, of KowthCarolina. The inquiries by the North Caro-lina members for his portrait brought tolight the fact that he had steadily refusedduring his life time to have a picturehimself made. It Is said indeed thathad such peculiar notions on this subjectthat he became very, indignant at one timeon discovering that an artist was tryingmake a sketch of him as be sat in <Speaker's chair, and immediately tcmeasures to have the sketoh summarily itroyed, which was done. This, it seeiwas not bis only peouliarijy,, having left ex-plieit directions at hj» death that no pictureof him ahould be retained, ana that bisgrave should be unmarked by any monu-ment exoept a pile of stones, to whioh eaohperson visiting the grave might be permittedto add a stone.

THS BARTHOLDI STATUS.

" Like the Brooklyn Bridge novelty,1

young Philadelphia lady writes from Paris,"you will soon be going to explore thewoiders of the Bartholdi statue. Zup in it the other day, giving my littletribution towards paying the dear girl1

(Iibby we call her here) passage overNew York. This unique thing which ofront* one in the Hue de Yigny, toweringabove the six-stray houses, is really fine. The pose is simple and «najestlo, andare parts of the drapery that have theeaoy of work oh a statuette. You can hardl;realist that the folds of the huge robestubborn bronze. The surface is so wrong!by the hammer that it gives the effect ofmottled silk. Worth might be proud of thesleeve of her mantle. The gesture of, theoutstretched right arm is full of spirit, whilethe left, holding the tablet, forms, with thehead, a beautiful balance in the composi-tion. It seems sacrilegious to have' interior' to such a superb creature. Theentry is by the sole of the uplifted f o o t -they say a Chicago girl was the model-a tall man oango in easily. Inside weto be looking up to the lantern of a Gothiccathedral, with numerous eyelets of lightfrom the rivet hole, piercing the gloom. Wereached the head by a temporary woodenstaircase. At New Tork" there will beelevator working in the great frameworkiron which is to form t ie main support :the structure. The old cicerone tellsthe tale of dimensions as we ascend. Beck-oning from the coronet to what maycalled the footstool the figure measuresfeet fl$ inches—I want to be aocurate—bu'It is higher to the hand. The pedestalgranite is to be 82 feet. From the surfaceof Bedloe Island to the top of the torch willbe 219 feet 11* inches. Now, the monumat London, the loftiest isolated columnthe world, is but 202 feet high; the V<dome Column, 144 feet, and the ArcTriomphe, 160 feet, while as for the CokBUS erf Bhodes, he stands but 140 feet instockings. Miss liberty will beat himfeet and over. The stain in the arm hainot been completed, so we had to stopthe head, the last story but one, and ththrough the apertures in the coronet ail {glory of Paris bursts upon the view."
