CHOICE OF WIRE ROPE TERMINATIONS
The choice of the correct wire rope termination is second in
importance only to the selection of the most suitable wire ropefor a particular application. In addition, the attachment ofterminations to ropes should be carried out with the necessaryskill and equipment to ensure that the load can be effectivelytransferred from the rope to the termination. When ropes arebeing replaced the terminations should be checked to ensure theyare in good mechanical order before re-use.
WARNING
Wire Rope Terminations must be applied to the correct sizeand construction of wire rope.
Wire Rope Terminations must always be fitted in accordancewith any manufacturers recommendations.
Incorrect use or application of Wire Rope Terminations canresult in an unsafe condition, which could lead to propertydamage, serious injury or death.
Special purpose or high technology wire ropes such as Casarmay exceed the capacity of standard terminations.
Swage Fittings must always be swaged by a competentperson using a suitable wire rope press and dies inaccordance with the manufacturers recommendations.

Nobles Threaded Swage Fitting Rigging Screws
Threaded swage fittings may be fitted to rigging screws providedthat compatibility is assured. The appropriate size rigging screwis one with a Grade L load rating, which matches the WLL of the
rope assembly. Nobles standard Grade P rigging screws can beused but must be derated to Grade L capacity when a stud endis fitted.
Rigging screws of different types and brand may have differentthread tolerances and barrel lengths. Details of the barrelsintended for use or sample barrels should be provided to ensurecorrect fitment. Nobles stud end swage fittings fittings have athread tolerance that matches Nobles rigging screw barrels.Stud end swage fitting thread orientation should match the wirerope lay - i.e. RH thread for RHOL rope.

CROSBY OPEN SWAGE SOCKETS
Forged from special bar quality carbon steel, suitable for cold
forming. Hardness controlled by spheroidize annealing.
Swage Socket terminations have an efficiency rating of 100%based on the catalogue strength of wire rope.
Stamp for identification after swaging without concern forfractures.
Crosby swage sockets incorporate a reduced machined area of theshank, which is equivalent to the proper after swage dimension. Before, swaging, this provides for an obvious visual difference inthe shank diameter. After swaging, a uniform shank diameter iscreated allowing for a QUIC-CHECK and permanent visualinspection opportunity.
Designed to quickly determine whether the socket has been
through the swaging operation and assist in field inspections, itdoes not eliminate the need to perform standard productioninspections which include gauging for the proper after swagedimensions or proof load testing.
WARNING
Swage sockets must be applied to the correct size andconstruction of wire rope.
Swage sockets must always be swaged by a competentperson using a suitable wire rope press and dies inaccordance with the manufacturers recommendations.
Incorrect use or application of swage sockets can result in anunsafe termination, which could lead to property damage, serious injury or death.

Wire Rope & Strand Terminations
WIRELOCK
WIRELOCK is a two pack
socket capping compoundthat has the followingadvantages:
No heat
No acid
No hazardousmolten metal
No long cooling/curingprocess
No annealing of wiresat socket neck
No guessing of temperature
No loss of lubricantat socket neck
No special storageconditions
No expensive equipment
Provides 100% efficiency
Improves fatigue life
Is suitable for operationin extremes oftemperature
Is ideal for on siteapplication
Is approved by Lloyds Register of Shippingand Det Norske Veritas (D.N.V.)
Minimum amount of Wirelock required for agiven size of wire rope socket
Why chooseWIRELOCK
?
Because -
1. WIRELOCK is a convenient and very simple system to use. There are no special preparations, no external heat isrequired and the system can even be used on site, attemperatures down to and slightly below 0C.
2. Sockets, poured with WIRELOCK, can be put into servicewithin 50 minutes, in a temperature range of 18C to 24C.
3. The use of WIRELOCK eliminates the need for heating socketassemblies, melting metal and handling the molten metal. It also has the advantage of being considerably lighter thanwhite metal, making the subsequent handling of the socketeasier.
4. WIRELOCK is currently used in conjunction with virtually allthe commercially available sockets and ropes. Other non-standard uses include short basket sockets, armoured cablesand umbilical cables incorporating a strain member.
5. In common with most other resin systems WIRELOCK hasno problem in coping with cold or extremely cold operatingconditions, but does have a recommended upper operatinglimit of 115C (a series of creep tests confirm, however, thatWIRELOCK is much more efficient than zinc at 130C).
6. WIRELOCK performs very well under the most hostileenvironments. The only exceptions being immersion in strongalkaline solutions, such as caustic soda, or strong acids.
7. The lack of heat, during the pouring process, means thatthere is no annealing of the wires and the grease within the
rope at the neck of the socket remains intact. This decreasesthe chance of local, severe or internal corrosion in service.
8. WIRELOCK has the approval of Lloyds Register of Shippingas a socketing system.
WARNING
Incorrect use of WIRELOCK can result in an unsafetermination which may lead to property damage, seriousinjury or death.
Do not use WIRELOCK with stainless steel wire rope in saltwater environment applications.
Use only soft annealed iron wire for seizing.
Do not use any other wire (copper, brass, stainless, etc) forseizing.
Never use an assembly until the WIRELOCK has gelled andcured.
Remove any non-metallic coating from the broomed area.
Sockets with large grooves need to have those grooves filledbefore use with WIRELOCK.
WIRELOCK resin, in liquid state, is flammable.
Chemicals used in this product can give off toxic fumes andcan burn eyes and skin.
Never use out-of-date material.
Use only in well-ventilated work areas.
Never breathe fumes directly or for extended time.
Always wear safety glasses to protect eyes.
Always wear gloves to protect hands and avoid direct contactwith skin.

CROSBY SUPER TERMINATOR
The Crosby S-423T Super TERMINATOR is the first wedge socket
designed to take advantage of the performance propertiesassociated with high performance, high strength, compactedstrand, rotation resistant wire ropes.
The Super TERMINATOR offers several advantages over traditionalmethods of wedge socket terminations.
The innovative design will significantly increase the terminationefficiency over existing wedge sockets available today.
Terminations on most ropes have a minimum efficiency ratingof 80% of the rope's catalogue breaking strength.
Patent pending design eliminates the difficulty of installinghigh performance, high strength, compacted strand, rotationresistant wire rope into a wedge socket termination.
Proper application of the Super TERMINATOR eliminates thefirst load requirement of conventional wedge socket
terminations.Additional features:

The grips in a connection should be spaced along the wire rope at
distances between adjacent grips of approximately six ropediameters, with the position of the grip nearest the endconnection as shown.
The sequence of tightening an assembly of wire rope grips on awire rope connection after they have been correctly positioned isfrom the thimble outwards.
The tightening torque applied to the nuts should always complywith any recommendations provided by the manufacturer;however, where recommendations are not provided by themanufacturer, the tightening torque applied to the nuts shouldcomply with recommendations given in the table.

WIRE ROPE GRIPS - Not to be used for lifting
TO AS 2076
When properly applied, wirerope grips afford a simplemechanical means ofsecuring the end of a wirerope. They are appropriatefor temporarily securing theend of a wire rope that mayneed to be shortened fromthe gripped end.
Inspection: A terminationmade with wire rope grips isto be inspected at regularintervals. The nuts may require further adjustment.
Live Running Ropes: Wire rope grips shall not be used for
making terminations on live running ropes (i.e. One that appliesforce to a moving object) nor where the rope is required tosupport persons or dangerous or substantial loads.
Rope Lengthening: Wire rope grips should not be used wherethere is a likelihood of the rope having to be lengthened at that end.Lengthening would bring at least part of the rope on which the griphad been fastened into a position now subject to full load. Thedanger is that this part of the rope may have been damaged by theeffects of fatigue or by pressure exerted by the grip.
Method of Application: The efficiency of a wire rope terminationmade with wire rope grips depends on the number perconnection, the correct placement on the rope, and the care andskill in the fitting and tightening of the grips.
The number of wire rope grips per connection should not be lessthan the minimum specified in the table.
Correct method of fitting wire rope grips
Incorrect method of fitting wire rope grips
WARNING
Wire rope grips should not be used for lifting purposes andare not intended for the permanent fastening of a rope that issubject to high dynamic loading.
Where wire rope grips are fitted to rope constructed of highergrade wire than 1770 MPa IWRC, the assembly may need tobe derated or additional grips may be required.

CABLE GRIPS
A Cable Grip is a woven sleeve and eye which fits onto a cable to
become an attachment point for hauling and/or securing thecable. Also referred to as a sock, stocking or puller.
Operational Characteristics
Because of its unique helical design the cable grip willimmediately shrink onto the cable when fitted over the end ofthe cable. When load is applied to the cable grip, via the haulingrope, the effective grip increases in proportion to the axial loadplaced upon it. A properly selected and fitted cable grip, usedunder correct operating procedure, should never slip.
Heat Shrink
NCG grips are fitted with a medium wall glue lined heat shrinkbehind the ferrule to cover the protruding wires and reduce the
risk associated will manual handling.
Identification
All NCG Cable Grips are stamped on the ferrule with the NCG logoand their corresponding breaking strength, size range and serialnumber.
The Strength of Grips
Strengths shown in tables are Ultimate Tensile Strengths testedon the mean cable diameter. Since field conditions offer such amagnitude of variable factors it is difficult to list a guaranteed
strength. The main factors that will reduce the strength of a CableGrip are uneven load on the strand, caused by irregularities in thecable end, and abrasion of the wires. Fitting an incorrect size gripwill lead to premature failure. Further, always inspect a cable gripfor signs of wear; a damaged grip should be replaced.
Safety Factor
A safety factor of at least 3:1 is recommended for general haulingapplications where the correct grip has been correctly fitted.Using this as a guide, each hauling application should beevaluated on its own merit to determine an appropriate safetyfactor.
Grip Types
Tubular
These grips are of cylindrical construction of 1 to 5 plys(depending on strength requirements) with 1 of 3 eye stylesfor various applications. These are the most common typeof grips and are fitted over the end of the cable.
Lace-Up
These grips are a flat construction. This allows the grip to bewrapped around the cable at any position then secured by a lace. These grips are used where it is impractical to use a tubular gripwhich has to be fitted and removed over the end of the cable.Lace-up grips can also be used in the central portion of a haulingjob to load share with a tubular grip. These grips are available inoffset eye and double eye types.
Eye Styles
Single Eye
These are single eye, integrally woven on the central axis of thegrip. These are used mainly for general cable hauling.
Offset Eye
This style allows the cable to be passed through the grip so as to
secure the grip at any point along the cable. It is used mainly forstrain relief.
Double Eye
Again this eye type allows the cable to pass through the grip. The extra eye allows the cable to be lifted into position with oneeye whilst the other eye is used to anchor the cable to a fixture.
WARNING
NCG Cable Grips are NOT lifting devices.
ALWAYS
Select the correct grip for the particular job.
Store in a clean dry environment.
Store monofilament nylon grips away from sunlight.
Store every grip before and after each pull.
Prepare cable ends by chamfering the end to approx. 30.
Approximately 30mm from the mouth end of the grip it isrecommended that anchoring or binding is used to guardagainst accidental release and ensure maximum reliability. It isalso helpful to tape down securely the mouth end of the grip to
reduce the risk of fouling.NEVER
Use a grip of incorrect size or specification.
Use a damaged grip.
Push the mouth of any grip against flat surfaces.
Haul over abrasive surfaces, however if this is not possibleensure regular inspections of the grip.
