Hello again. It’s a few months now since Newton’s Players produced The Robin Hood Files. Many thanks to everyone who went to see
the show, and especially those who have passed on their thoughts to cast members. The response was very positive and it seems the audi-ences enjoyed watching the show as much as we enjoyed performing it!
Thoughts now turn towards our next venture. We are delighted to announce that we will start rehearsing our next play Acting Funny, a collection of short comedy sketches, on 5th September. Auditions have already taken place and all the cast are looking forward to producing what promises to be a very funny show to be performed on 2nd and 3rd December, so look out for more details in future editions of In Touch. This is to be followed next year by a production of Alan Ayckbourn’s Confusions. There will be more details on that in the New Year.
Finally calling all Ivory Tinklers! Newton’s Player’s are sad to announce that after many years as our Musical Director Jim Laughton has decided to retire from the role. We are extremely grateful to everything that Jim has done for us over the years. Those of you that have seen our shows will recognise what a wonderful job he has done, even making me sound ok in my attempts to “ham up” various songs as a pantomime dame!
However, Jim’s retirement creates a new opportunity for someone to join us as our accompanist. So if you play the piano and wish to become involved in our friendly and fun group, please contact club chairperson Lynda Wesson on 01476 862 039.
Until next time Paul Cope
Looking back . . .In April, bathed in glorious sunshine,
we persuaded friends round to our place to enjoy the Last Barbecue of Summer. Little did we know that we weren’t far wrong. Okay, we’ve man-aged to eat outdoors a few times but our sacrifices to the Great Sun God have been in vain.
But the weather hasn’t put off other house and garden guests. Rabbits have been making a meal of plants, woodpi-geons, “As big as chickens!” my neigh-bour says, have plucked stems bare and then flattened small shrubs.
Indoors we’ve had the company of thrips and flies and on the odd warm evening on the terrace a nice glass of something has filled up with wasps.
Roll on winter when we can enjoy some decent weather.

Council house swap?
We’re in a two-bedroom bun-galow in Colsterworth and
want to move into a 2/3 bedroom house in or fairly close to the vil-lage. We have permission from SKDC to do a swap.
If you’re looking to downsize, our bungalow might just suit you. It’s just two years since the kitchen and bathroom were refitted and there’s a decent size garden with a new patio area. The rear looks out on to open fields.
If you’re interested, please call me on 860 665 so we can all meet and look round the two proper-ties.

Book Club
The Woman in White, by Wilkie Collins, was written in 1859 and
is considered to be one of the first mystery novels.
Members of the Book Club read It for the August meeting. It certainly holds the reader’s attention despite the length and the fact that the lan-guage used is different to modern novels. However once you get used to the writer’s style, the story inter-ests you and you are keen to con-tinue with the story.
The characters are well described and it makes you reflect on how different society is today. The mys-tery of the woman in white extends throughout the book and the story is told in first-hand reports by a succes-sion of different narrators: the hero of the piece, the family attorney, the heroine’s homely but charismatic and intelligent spinster half-sister, the eccentric invalid, the housekeep-er, the melodramatic Italian villain, and so on. Each narrator moves the plot forward, uncovering some twist that the prior narrator was not privy to. The story ends with the mystery solved and a happy ending. If you like mystery/detective books, then try this one – I can recommend it.
If you are interested in joining our Book Club, the next meeting is on Monday 19th September at 8pm in The White Lion where we will be discussing The Long Song by Andrea Levy.

Women’s Institute report
With rain coming down like stair rods outside, there
was sunshine inside the Village Hall as Caroline Rossin and her husband Derek, ambassadors for Rainbows Hospice set up the colourful display of merchan-dise prior to Caroline’s talk. The hospice was founded in the late eighties, following two years to raise the £1.2 million needed to build the complex on donated land. But costs escalated to £4m, and now it takes that amount to keep it going each year. There are eight beds for children and six for the young people to use as short or long term respite care. Patients are taken from all over the East Midlands, includ-ing Lincolnshire, and ages range from newborn to the present eldest, a twenty six year old who has been receiving care for ten years now. .She spoke of the multi-sensory room and the hydrotherapy pool which gives a lot of pleasure to the children. The hospice was featured on BBC East Midlands Today re-cently and an open day for the public is to be held on the 17th September. Bett Pope thanked them both for an inspirational talk.
Tickets were on sale for the Kesteven Group meeting in Oc-
tober when Christopher Lewis from Antiques Roadshow will be the guest speaker.
County Federation sent us de-tails of yet another quiz evening, a coffee morning at headquar-ters in November and a Christ-mas lunch followed by a flower arranging demonstration by Martin Whitfield in December. Allington WI has invited us to it’s Quiz Afternoon in November.
The competition for a 5 inch knitted square was won by yours truly with Jane Ostler the run-ner-up. All the squares are to be joined together to make a blan-ket for the Rainbows Hospice, so please keep them coming – we
need quite a few.
We were at last able to present a small gift to our recently re-tired committee member, Rose-mary Bolongaro. Vice-President Mary Cowley thanked her for her work over the years. Rose-mary, still keeping her hand in, helped Barbara Moore to serve the refreshments (she won the raffle too).
Our meeting in the Village Hall on the 15th September sees guest Glenys Carter speaking on Aloe Vera, it’s history and healing properties. Join us in the hall at two o’clock, you will be most welcome. There will be the traditional Harvest Bring and Buy stall, anything from a carrot to a plum is most accept-able (Jane’s Victoria plums were delicious this month. Mine nev-er reached a cooking pot or pie, all being taken raw).
I hope you got your quiz en-tries in – the closing date was 1st September!

Although we did not have a meeting in August we have
still been busy.
On a rather dull morning at the end of July, twelve mem-bers gathered outside the Co-op to catch the bus for our trip to Sandringham Show - and what a day we had! First stop on the agenda for Loraine and I was coffee; duly refreshed we headed off round the many stands and then the floral mar-quees, followed by the show gardens. At the end of all that we decided it was Pimm’s o’clock so we headed into the Show Marquees I hope you all went in them to give you ideas of what is expected at our Show in September! Judging by the number of carrier bags full of plants that were loaded onto the bus going home, I think a good time was had by all.
Any ideas for next year’s trip,
please let us know otherwise the committee will have to de-cide on something.
The church troughs are still looking good, thanks to the willing volunteers for watering.
Things are in full swing for our next meeting, the Open Show on Monday September 12th in the Village Hall; setting up is from 7.15pm and judging com-mences at 8pm.
Refreshments will be avail-able while judging takes place and we would like to see the benches groaning with produce - so pick up a schedule from the Post Office, White Lion or Co-op and get your completed entry forms to me no later than Friday 9th September. There’s a class suitable for everybody to enter - who knows, you may win a tro-phy for your efforts. There will still be a members competition which is for a Sunflower Head, so let’s have a good turnout.

like pattern of the two common wasps, but a smooth paper cover-ing. This, together with an emerg-ing queen and the face markings of a worker, allowed them to be identified as Median Wasps.
Good photographs are also be-ing sent to the County Recorder to help identify moths. No help was needed to name the Dor Beetle, nicknamed the Lousy Watchman, found sitting on a dustbin lid. Its brilliant green underside was, for once, not covered in the mites which give it this name. Second generation Holly Blue butterflies emerged from holly bushes and will lay their eggs on flowering ivy
Individual bird interest was pro-vided by a juvenile sparrowhawk found stunned in a garden, and photographed on the hand be-fore it flew away. Four young spot-ted flycatchers fledged in late July and immediately dispersed. A tur-tle dove was seen regularly on the western end of the Woolsthorpe Line.
The drought has favoured only those plants which can combat desiccation. Ragwort in abun-dance on the central reservation of the A1 is an example. The plen-tiful seeds of the annual weed Petty Spurge (Euphorbia peplus) germinate rapidly after a shower;
even dew is sufficient to sustain their shallow, fibrous roots. The milky sap of their stems not only keeps them moist, but protects against predators. Seed capsules split open abruptly and aid dis-persal. In addition they have a substance attractive to ants which may carry the seeds away. It is worth looking closely between the spring green leaves to find the almost hidden unusual flowers. The common name “petty” (insig-nificant) is less appropriate than the Greek peplos, which was the name for a pretty pleated blouse.
To look for in September
Rain will bring the first autumn fungi, particularly colourful ones like chalk and milk caps. Sun will see newly emerged adult butter-flies which will overwinter. Look for Brimstones and Commas, Pea-cocks, Small Tortoiseshells and Red Admirals.
I look forward to your observa-tions and queries at 61 Woolsthor-pe Road, on 860465 or by e-mail at [email protected]

In the last week of July, rooks moved from their rookeries to
a temporary roost near Colster-worth playing field. Joined by jackdaws, they were an amazing sight. Starting about 9.30 at night. they came in their thousands, riv-ers of black against a darkening sky.
In the first week of August, the main groups of swifts left. Where one evening flight last year had consisted of a maximum of eight birds, this year the numbers had swelled to thirty.
By the third week, fifty house martins were circling gardens in Woolsthorpe and exploring the eaves. Another large group were assembled in the region of build-ings at Gunby.
Abundance has been the theme for insects too. On 28th July, fly-ing ants caused a frenzy of feed-ing birds. These black garden ants were reported all over Lin-colnshire on the same day. Honey bees and three kinds of bumble bees were seen in their hundreds in a bed of marjoram flowers on sunny days. Black and yellow hov-erflies seem to be at every flower; they include the Marmalade fly, the only one with double stripes. They are pollinators and their lar-vae feed on aphids and are more welcome than the wasps. Having finished the task of feeding their grubs on meaty insects, the wasps please themselves with sugars. They swarm onto plums, pears and apples, excavating the flesh and leaving only the skins. Then drugged with a surfeit, they ven-ture indoors!
A set of photos of a large, long wasps’ nest did not have the shell-
