Site inspection Tonhalle and Kongresshaus Zurich After its three-year refurbishment, the Kongresshaus/Tonhalle event complex is scheduled to re-open in late summer 2020. The total renovation planned will also extend to specific conversion work to make the complex more accessible, simplify its spatial arrangements and make its rooms more flexible in their use. And the company Kuhn Organ Builders Ltd, Männedorf (2014 we had a guided tour there) is furthermore enthusiastic about building the new Tonhalle Organ. Some of you participated in the 2015 Tonhalle farewell tour, given by the trombonist S. Quistad. Now the ESCZ is invited to get a site inspection in English of about 1 ½ hours. You should be a good walker and wear sturdy shoes. Costs for members CHF 10.00, guests have to pay the full price of CHF 20.00. Meet Sonja at 16.45 h at tram stop Bürkliplatz (tram 2, 5, 8, 9, 11, bus 161 and 165 will bring you there). After the interesting event we can go to a restaurant and have something to eat and/or to drink. Expedition Solar System at FocusTerra ETHZ ETH Zurich is at the forefront of three space missions. Hop on board and join us this evening! We will take off on a journey to the Moon, to Mars, to Venus and all the way to the edge of our solar system. What will we discover? And how will we get there? We teamed up with our scientists to develop exciting stories about what they are searching for and finding out there, what motivates them, and how they are able to look deep into the interiors of planets millions of kilometers away. In our exhibition, researchers become the ‘heroes’ of their own stories. They introduce themselves and show you how research really works. The stories are presented in the form of comics combining art and science – a fun way for experts and non-experts alike to discover the science of our planetary environment. Tonight, we will have the opportunity to join an English guided tour which takes approx. 1 hour and costs CHF 10.00 for members and CHF 15.00 for guests. Maximum participation is 12, so please be

in quick with your registration. How to get there: The ETH Museum is located at Sonneggstrasse 5 in 8006 Zurich. Take tram 6, 9 or 10 and get off at stop “Universitätsspital”. From there it is a short walk along Rämistrasse, taking the first road on the left which is Sonneggstrasse. We will meet inside the building. Open House at Restaurant Werdguet Knock Knock. Who's there? Pasta! Pasta who? Italian chef who pasta away. If you are in the mood for pasta, you are in the right restaurant tonight, even though it’s not an Italian restaurant. Do you want to come out for an evening to have a drink or a meal and visit with members of ESCZ speaking English? Then join us for the evening, stay as long as you wish. Non members are welcome! We meet at our "Stammbeiz" Restaurant Werdguet. How to get there, see frame below. For various events like slide shows, lectures, the AGM or the so-called “Open House” events on the last Tuesday of the month, we meet as usual at the Restaurant Werdguet, Morgartenstrasse 30, 8004 Zurich. How to get there: The restaurant Werdguet can be difficult to find. Those coming for the first time are recommended to take tram 9 or 14 to Bahnhof Wiedikon. Cross the street so that you are on the opposite side to the Wiedikon station entrance. Then walk back down Birmensdorferstrasse towards Stauffacher until you see Morgartenstrasse on the right hand side. Walk down Morgartenstrasse and you will see the restaurant Werdguet on the left hand side at the first corner. www.werdguet.ch

Christmas Dinner 2018 No, we are not lazy about looking for a new location for our next Christmas Dinner. The one last year at the Stürmeierhuus in Schlieren was just such a great success. The food was great and everybody was happy. So, why not go there again? Please find more information and the registration form in the envelope.

Slide Show of Uganda with Mountain Gorillas and other highlights Imagine paying $ 600 half a year before for the permit to visit the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat on a specific day. Then you are not there at the right time, are not fit enough or there is the rare chance that you do not see the gorillas. It will not happen to you tonight. Marina will show you her encounter with a habituated gorilla family in Bwindi National Park in Uganda. There are only 900 gorillas left worldwide and they cannot be kept in zoos. You will see plenty of other rare animals like chimpanzees, shoe bill storks, a tree lion, a leopard and many more. Come and enjoy the easy visit to beautiful Uganda which is not yet as crowded as other East African destinations. Location is at the Restaurant Werdguet. How to get there, see November 27 (frame). The event takes place in the back room (Saal). No need to register. You may come earlier than 19.00 h to order food or wait until after the 1-hour presentation to eat. Or you can just have a drink or a dessert. Guests are welcome to the slide show for CHF 5.00. Due to high demand before Christmas, the “Saal” in the Werdguet is not available on our regular Tuesday, so we set the date one day later. Benjamin Guélat accompanies Charlie Chaplin’s classic silent movie “Gold Rush” (1925) on the big symphonic organ. You don’t need a ticket, but there will be a collection to cover the costs. Tram Museum Zurich Can you remember? The former tram museum was located at tram stop Wartau in Zurich-Hoengg, then it moved its location to the Burgwies area at Forchstrasse. This buiding is the oldest tram garage in Zurich and is still 100%.in service. Here is where we go this evening! Let’s indulge in the good old times. Barbara invites you to join in an English guided tour which starts at 18.30 h sharp (please be there 15 minutes before) and takes about 1 hour. Costs are CHF 12.00 for adults and CHF 8.00 for seniors, guests

Coca-Cola It was 1886 when in New York Harbour workers were constructing the statue of Liberty. Eight hundred miles away, another great American symbol was about to be created - Coca-Cola. Like many people who change history, the Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton was inspired by simple curiosity. There are now just two countries in the world where Coca-Cola cannot be bought or sold, at least not officially. They are Cuba and North Korea, which are both under long-term US trade embargoes (Cuba since 1962 and North Korea since 1950). There is a strong possibility that you would now like to hear the whole story of Coca-Cola and want to walk through the production halls to get a look behind the scenery. Coca-Cola offers us an English guided tour of about 2 hours, free for members, guests pay CHF 5.00. Register as soon as possible with Sonja by phone 044 302 45 47 because space is limited. Buy a return ticket to Dietlikon (NOT Dietikon) and meet Sonja in front of track 14 at main station. When you register, please leave your full name and phone number in a clear voice. Very important! Coca-Cola has very strict regulations for guided tours: No sick persons, nobody with cough, running nose, wounds or diarrhoea. All of us have to take off our watches and all pieces of jewellery.

February 12 Annual General Meeting 2019 March 5 guided tour through the new Museum C.G. Jung in Küsnacht ZH A short note from the Secretary Dear Members, The good old P.O. Box of our Club. We all take it for granted to have one. It has been the hub for almost all sorts of (physical) correspondence during decades. We had P.O. Boxes at different post office locations, and then landed in 8024 Rämistrasse. Even this epoch will soon come to an end. Nowadays, not much mail arrives to our P.O. Box anymore, everything goes via the e-channel. 8024 Rämistrasse will be abandoned, that’s the end of our P.O. Box 671. We might rent a new one in another post office, but would have to pay an important fee each year. We will keep you informed. Also with our club programmes, we go electronic ways in the future. So this is the last time, you will receive a (physical) programme this way. Please study the attached sheet “E-Programme”. It is not usual to run events between Christmas and New Year. But this year, Sonja discovered something unique for Boxing Day. It has to do with Charlie Chaplin and the spirit of the good old times. A feast for your senses. Obituary Hermann Rathgeb died on 15 September 2018 at the age of 95 years. He was a longstanding member of 30 years of our ESCZ. We would all like to thank him for his commitment. He brought a lot of ideas into the club and also organised some very special events. His quiet and modest manner was greatly appreciated at all times. All the new members who came in contact with him had the feeling that he respected and welcomed them. We will carry his memory with us. For the ESCZ Sibylle Ex-President
