Terms to Know ! ELL – English Language Learner
! Former ELL – must continue to receive services for an additional 2 years
Exit Criteria ELLs can exit ELL status in the following ways:
! Grades K-‐12: Scoring at the Commanding/Proficient level on the NYSESLAT
! Grades 3-‐8: Scoring at the Expanding/Advanced level on the NYSESLAT and 3 or above on the NYS ELA Assessment within the same year.

In what languages are the NYS content-‐area assessments available? ! Math and Science test booklets are published by New York State Education Department in several of the most commonly-‐spoken languages in NYS
! Grades 6-‐8 Mathematics: Available in Traditional Chinese, Haitian Creole, Korean, Russian and Spanish.
! Grade 8 Science: Available in Traditional Chinese, Haitian Creole, and Spanish.
! Grade 6-‐8 ELA (English Language Arts): No written or oral translations. English language learners may use bilingual dictionaries and glossaries.

How to Set Up an Appointment with the Guidance Department ! Parents can sign up in the appointment book at the Guidance Department.
! Parents can call the Guidance Department secretary to make an appointment.
! Students may stop by before or after school, during homeroom, or during lunch.
! If the staff member they wish to see is unavailable, the secretary will help them sign up for an appointment.
! Students will receive a pass in homeroom on the day of the appointment.
