PHILOSOPHY OF PRACTICE We believe that everything we do in practice prepares us for Friday Nights.
Our practice sessions will be tougher than our games and we will prepare us for everything. We will follow the “race horse philosophy” of performing as many reps possible in the allotted time, which also means NOT having players standing during practice and performing every drill at game speed.
1. TIME. The only thing that every team has in common is time.
We have to do more things and do them better than every team on our schedule and in Division 3. 2. SETUP. There will be a schedule of who has to setup the field before the start of DSW.
Not having it setup on time is the same as being late. 3. ON TIME. This means 5 minutes before the start time properly dressed.
Panther Reminders for anyone that comes out of the fieldhouse at the start of practice. 4. ATTITUDE. We will be positive and encouraging.
There will be no profanity, talking when a coach is talking, or making fun of a teammate. We will show great enthusiasm for the greatest game on Earth.
5. HUSTLE. We NEVER walk on the football field. We sprint to the next drill. Jog to water and back.
We will never sit on our helmet or lay down. Only taking a knee is acceptable.
Double Whistle: We need all 11 players at the ball before the 2nd whistle is blown. 4 seconds: We need to snap the ball 4 seconds after breaking the offensive hustle 6. TACKLING. We will wrap up the RB and grab cloth every single time. PERIOD. 7. ADVERSITY. Coaches are going to make bad things happen to you in practice so that there is
NOTHING that can happen in the game that you can’t handle. This can include turnovers, conditioning, extra plays, cheap shots.
8. CLEANUP. We are going to Create PRIDE in Everything We Do.
There will be assigned groups to take equipment in, unless there are tardy players. 9. LOCKER ROOM. The Field house will be kept clean all season.
THE Porterville Panthers will OUT-HUSTLE, OUT-CONDITION, and OUT-HIT every one of our opponents. We have
to be smarter, stronger, and more disciplined than anyone we play.
SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT PORTERVILLE FOOTBALL
1. We must have PRIDE and INTERNAL MOTIVATION in everything that we do.
2. Championship teams have poise and confidence. This is developed through preparation and discipline.
3. Winning is a habit that is attained by consistent mental and physical effort.
4. Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance
5. Don’t worry about failures. Things constantly go wrong in football…learn from our errors so that we don’t repeat them. We also have to learn how to quickly bounce back…this is called ADVERSITY.
6. Championship teams have ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
7. The reason most teams don’t achieve more is because they don’t attempt more.
8. We cannot have complainers on our team. Stay away from people who blame others and always have an excuse for their own failures. These “clubhouse lawyers” are losers and they will drag us down.
9. As soon as we think we have made our mark in the world, watch out for the eraser!
10. We will play the game like we practice – strive each day for perfection.
11. The impossible is what nobody can do – until somebody does it!!!
12. These Five statements will take us far in life:
“please” “thank you” “you’re welcome” “ no, sir” “yes, sir”

BLOCKING RULES & TECHNIQUES INDIVIDUAL BLOCKS “ON”: Block the DL or LB directly in front of lineman. Helmet between DL & hole FIRST STEP: If helmet needs to be on Right, Step Right. vice versa
. “GAP”: Wrong shoulder block the DL in the gap away from the hole. Get helmet across DL chest FIRST STEP: replace near foot of adjacent linemen.
“DOWN”: Block defensive linemen covering the adjacent offensive linemen. Assume penentration and use GAP technique. If “flexed” off LOS or if he spinned out of your last block…. Cross over with 1st step, nose aimed at hip. Step with inside foot and Strike a blow with inside shoulder.
“REACH”: Block the DL or LB in the hole towards the playside. Lateral step & get helmet across the Defender’s chest. 1. Lateral step 2. Catch up step 3. Aim at far hip 4. Contact made with inside shoulder 5. Gain position by swinging tail and pinning man inside
“PULL CHECK”: Fill for pulling linemen pulling AWAY from you Centers & Tackles make this block
“AREA”: Uncovered linemen on backside. Protect Area…Don’t go after a defensive player!!! Backside guard on Traps, pass plays “RELEASE TO BACKER”: Take a lateral step, Drop outside shoulder and RIP through defensive linemen.
N T
M
COMBINATION BLOCKS “GUT”: Uncovered lineman AWAY blocks. The covered lineman “folds” behind
and blocks the ON LB.
“DOUBLE”: The inside lineman (POST) and outside lineman (LEAD) double a DL. Both step with inside feet and make initial contact with inside shoulders. When the POST gets helmet across and establishes position with outside shoulder, the LEAD goes to LB
“Queen” / “Ace” / “King”: Combo block between two linemen on ISO plays. CROSS if a DL is in the attack hole. The Tackle goes first, making a GAP block. The Guard uses a TRAP technique and kicks out first DL outside the Tackle. FAN if nobody in the attack hole. Guard & Tackle block out. FIST if both there are DL in both gaps inside the hole. (A & B…or…B & C).
“WEDGE”: All linemen aggressively fire step towards the center, attempting to “wrong” shoulder block the nearest inside DL. The inside shoulder should “fit” on the hip of the adjacent lineman.. People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves they have the first secret of success.
