It is not unmitigated joy; the
resurrection is greeted by
confusion, fear and even
comedy. Yet there is freshness
here too, new life being
breathed into an old carcass of a
world.

sister church in Jerusalem

Opening Hymn
Light’s glittering morn bedecks the sky;
heaven thunders forth its victor-cry:
Alleluia.
The glad earth shouts her triumph high,
and groaning hell makes wild reply:
Alleluia.
While he, the King, the mighty King,
despoiling death of all its sting,
Alleluia.
His tomb of late the threefold guard
of watch and stone and seal had barred;
Alleluia.
The pains of hell are loosed at last,
the days of mourning now are past;
Alleluia.
an angel robed in light hath said,
‘The Lord is risen from the dead’:
Alleluia.
all praise be thine, O risen Lord,
from death to endless life restored;
Alleluia.
all praise to God the Father be
and Holy Ghost eternally:
Alleluia.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 1 April 2018
Gradual Hymn
Jesus Christ is risen today,
alleluia!
our triumphant holy day,
alleluia!
who so lately on the cross
alleluia!
suffered to redeem our loss,
alleluia!
Hymns of praise then let us sing
alleluia!
unto Christ, our heavenly king,
alleluia!
who endured the cross and grave
alleluia!
sinners to redeem and save.
alleluia!
But the pain that he endured
alleluia!
our salvation has procured;
alleluia!
now exalted he is king,
alleluia!
and the angels ever sing:
alleluia!

Offertory Hymn
Christ is alive, with joy we sing;
we celebrate our risen Lord,
praising the glory of his name.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
He is the grain of wheat that died,
sown in distress and reaped in joy,
yielding a harvest of new life.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
He is the sun which brings the
dawn:
he is the light of all the world,
setting us free from death and sin.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
He is the vine set in the earth,
sharing our life, from birth to
death,
that we might share in God’s own
life.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
He is the bread that comes from
God,
broken to feed us in our need,
given to bring eternal life.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Christ is alive, with joy we sing;
we celebrate our risen Lord,
praising the glory of his name.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 1 April 2018
Final Hymn
Jesus lives! your terrors now
can, O death, no more appal us;
Jesus lives! by this we know
now the grave cannot enthral us.
Hallelujah!
Jesus lives! for us he died;
then may we, for Jesus living,
pure in heart, in him abide,
glory to our Saviour giving.
Hallelujah!
Jesus lives! our hearts know well
naught from us his love shall sever:
fame, or hurt, or powers of hell
tear us from his keeping never.
Hallelujah!
Jesus lives! henceforth is death
not for us a gloomy portal
when we take our final breath,
but the gate to life immortal.
Hallelujah!
Jesus lives! to him the throne
over all the world is given;
may we go where he is gone,
rest and reign with him in heaven.
Hallelujah!

PSALM 118, 1-2, 14-24
O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
his steadfast love endures for ever!
Let Israel say, ‘His steadfast love endures for ever.’
The LORD is my strength and my might;
he has become my salvation.
There are glad songs of victory in the tents of the righteous:
‘The right hand of the LORD does valiantly;
the right hand of the LORD is exalted;
the right hand of the LORD does valiantly.’
I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the LORD.
The LORD has punished me severely,
but he did not give me over to death.
Open to me the gates of righteousness,—- that I may enter through them and give thanks to the LORD.
This is the gate of the LORD;
the righteous shall enter through it.
I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation.
The stone that the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.
This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.
This is the day that the LORD has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.
