Welcome to the 42nd Annual AADC Awards. A celebration of creativity and a night when the industry comes together to laud and applaud the very best local work.It is also an opportunity to reflect on what the Club has achieved this year and what it has planned for 2020.This year we introduced new events such as Pause Fest Download, had a fantastic presentation from Ralph van Dijk, reshaped and, with the Dunstan Foundation, co-hosted another successful AdMental. We have established the Club’s strongest ever ties with the tertiary institutions of Adelaide and grown our membership to over 160 for the first time in many years, welcoming more than 50 students to the Club in the process.It has been fantastic see some great entries in this year’s Student Categories. The work submitted was of a high standard, but more importantly for those entrants, their work was judged by the most senior and respected creative minds of Adelaide. The very same people you students will need to impress if you want a career in this business. The first step of a long journey has been achieved. You have impressed them. Well done. They don’t do it for the perks, because there aren’t any. They all pay full price for their tickets for every event, including the AADC Awards Dinner. They don’t do it for the kudos, because more often than not, their efforts are largely anonymous. They do it because they believe in the Club and in the local industry, and want to see both grow.And, to that end, they have pulled together and extraordinary calendar of events for next year.The first and most exciting event of the year is in February. She Creates is a fantastic initiative of the Club and is designed to inspire, promote and represent women in the creative communication industry.We will have a presentation from Simon McQuoid, the director of Mortal Kombat as he takes us on his journey from AWARD School graduate to Hollywood Director.
Author of the Place Economy, designer and place brand builder, Andrew Hoyne, will be another keynote speaker later in the year and will talk about how greater collaboration between design and advertising can build better economies and communities. We will be hosting movie nights at the Mercury Cinemas with documentary movies like Art & Copy, Exit Through the Gift Shop and The Greatest Movie Ever Sold.AdMental will be back bigger and better than ever in April, continuing to shine a light on the growing, but underfunded and too often ignored issue of mental health. The Pool Night is dead, long live Holey Moley. And we’re looking forward to further collaborations with the Adelaide Media Club and Pause Fest Melbourne.It is an incredibly robust calendar and if you want to be a part of it, make sure you are a member. There more members we have, the more we can do and to that end, we will initiate a new sponsorship platform called Corporation Sponsorship.Corporation Sponsorship will enable every person within an organisation to become a member and enjoy the benefits of all the events listed above and more. So, for example, a company with a staff of 10, can become a sponsor of the Club for $700, and in return, each of their staff will become an AADC member.You don’t have to be a writer of art director to be a member. The silver watering can is awarded by the presidents each year for outstanding contribution above and beyond the call of duty to the advertising industry in South Australia.
After use in the television commercial by Clemenger in 1978, the silver watering can was donated by Adelaide & Wallaroo Fertilizer.

In 2017, more South Australians died from flu-related illness than accidents on our roads. Early indicators suggested the 2019 flu season could be even worse. But despite extensive media coverage, the rate of immunisation against the flu was in sharp decline. The public just wasn’t taking the flu seriously. Our job was to change that perception. We needed South Australians to take the threat of the flu, as seriously as a fatal car crash. To achieve this, we utilised a traffic device unique to South Australia. Roadside crash markers are used to mark locations where serious car accidents have occurred – red posts for a severe injury, and a black post for a fatality. Seen from a car, the understanding is immediate for South Australians. By placing these iconic roadside markers in unexpected public places, the message was clear. The flu is as deadly as a car accident, and it can hit you anywhere. The critical difference, you can be immunised against the flu. The campaign was executed across broadcast, social, outdoor and digital. Soon after its launch there was a sharp rise in the rate of immunisation, with South Australia’s flu vaccine reserves quickly becoming exhausted. With more vaccines on the way to meet increased demand, clearly our message found its mark.
