A MEMORIAL TRIBUTE 1
OR a thousand years A thens was a university town.
I ts several great school s of philosophy were in real ity

of these col l eges l ived in office'
to the ripe ol d age of ninety
nine years . In a famous hymn bearing his name he sang ,
God most g lorious, cal l ed by many a name We
are Thy chil d ren .
!The g reat p ioneer preacher of our own

Such sp irit of d epend ence—thus ex

righteousness , in seasons of d epression a Father to whomwe pray fervently , in d ays of even tenor a fr iend withinreach , a faith within reason
,a fear within wisd om ,
—it is in
some such sp ir it of d epend ence, sustaining intel l ect, energy ,courage, enthusiasm , and ind epend ence al ike, that we woul dface the tasks of a new year marked by the return o f our
heroes , the renewal of our l i fe, the reunion of Rice men,
the revival of l earning , and , great rejoi cing in hope.
For the heroes have returned .. H eroes of the longbow

our burning cross , who, before winning acad emi c spurs ,

A nd may we, too, carry on ,
Because there is but one truth ;Because there is but one banner ;Because there is but one light ;Because We have wi th us our youthOnce, and one chance and one manner

COMMEMORATION SERMON 1
H IS service of commemoration to which we now come,
and rightly come , as the beginning of this d ay of re
union and rejoicing , is at once a memor ial and a euchar ist ,a service of grateful remembrance and thoughtful thanks
g iving as before God and man.
“
There’

!
So the great master of Eng l ish speech has the gentl e
Ophel ia give pathetic utterance to a very d eep l ong ingof the human
“heart , perhaps the d eepest , the l onging forthoughtful and l oving remembrance ; and it is in gl ad re

A s I have been thinking over what I have written and havejust spoken to you about these men from the Rice Institute ,and the other men of al l sorts and cond itions from al l overthis country, of what they went forth tod o and

s duty ,
I have been l ed to try to take once more the measure of the
meaning of gratitud e, of a man’
s d ebt— every man’
s d ebtof gratitud e to his fel low-men and to God .
T he sp ir it of gratitud e is the finest virtue, the fairest andsweetest flower
,of personal character . I t requires
-
far more
refinement and d ignity of'
nature to receive consciously and
acknowl ed ge graceful ly and grateful ly a favor or a g i ft or aservice than it d oes to rend er the same to another . The
impul se of the crud e, unrestrained , und iscipl ined nature is
to stand back from and reject the thought of favor , of beingserved—to resent the sense of personal ob l igation . It woul d
prefer“
to think and to feel and to say of itsel f , I am in
d epend ent !!No l No human being in al l this worl d is or
ever was ind epend ent ; and the sense of ind epend ence isengend ered in men only by crass ignorance and sel fishnessand vulgar arrogance . A l l
'
stately soul s bow themselvesgraciously in gratitud e and thankfulness before both God

and their fel low-men . Gratitud e is. ever the authentic sign
of the true man , the true gentl eman, the highest type of
man . And why ! Because the one pl ainest fact of human
l i fe.
everywhere, of whatever rank or station, of whateversort or cond ition, i s the fact of God
’
s servi ce to man—a
service, l et us never forget , which we see rend ered , not only
and not chiefly in the beneficent arrangements of mater ial
nature, but more pl ainly and more emphatical ly and more
real ly in man’
s service to man . The d 1v1ne l S always servingand ministering to the human , we say ; yes , und oubted ly so ;
but i f that d ecl arationhas any cl ear and d efinite meaning
to us , it means‘
that this service is rend ered ever and at its
best through human agencies , through other men. The one
d iv1nest thing in the worl d that we know, i .e .
,the good , t
he
best, the highest , the noblest that is in man—the spiritual
image and l ikeness to God in whi ch he is mad e—is alwaysservmg his fel l ow-men .
“ And it is just in prop'
ortl on as we
become conscious of our fel low-men , just as we come real ly
to know them , and to know what they have d oneand are everd oing , that we come to .be possessed of the sp irit of gratitud e .
and thankfulness—of gratitud e and thankfulness fi rst to our
fel low-men and then quickly through them to God . I f weare not grateful , it is simply because we d o not know , we are
ignorant of both men and God ; and then we are but l ittl e,
if at al l , better than the beasts of the fiel d , for we have l ostthe humanness of human l i fe, and l osing that we have l ostconsciousness of al l d ivineness and g lory in any l i fe, and
l iving becomes only a beastly scrambl e and fight for mate
rial gain.

Commemorat ion Sermon 9
Our people have looked upon their own li fe with a d eeper com
prehension ; they have been qui ckened by a great moral stimulation ;they have had themsel ves reveal ed ' to themselves.
I t was two years and more before we went into the war
when he wrote that ; and if it was true then that “
we had
ourselves reveal ed to ourselves, ! it is a thousand times truer
to-d ay after having gone into the war . A nd i f we have
ever known , or if we are ever to know , one-another
'
in thiscountry , we know now . And what we know beyond al l
question and d oubt is this—that every el ement of the whol ecitizenship of our country , the highest and the l owest , theri ch and the poor , the l earned and the ignorant , the strong
and the weak , the high and the lowly, money-man and working-man, white man and red man and bl ack man—al l of
them—have gone in theperson of their sons to strive and

And to-d ay al l of our
