Welcome to the 27th Annual Lake Tahoe
Music Festival! “Music is one of the best
ways to enjoy the present. It’s not much fun to look forward to
hearing music or to remember what a song sounded like last week,
but music right now absorbs you and places you in the present
moment.” ~Sonnett Branche
That is why we here at the Lake Tahoe Music Festival and say
“You have to be here to feel it!” The festival’s spectacular settings
with their rich smell of pine, incomparable blue skies and
twinkling stars consume the senses. Add to that the remarkable
range of artistic talent, from classic rock and jazz to Broadway
and Beethoven, and the Lake Tahoe Music Festival becomes an
experience you’ll be happy to say you were “present”
to experience.
The Festival’s partnerships, both continued and new, are a key
component to our annual success. The same can be said for
our dedicated crew of volunteers, without whom we could not
execute such a wonderful festival experience. Each year we
eagerly anticipate the opportunities to strengthen our ties with
longtime Festival friends and forge new relationships. We also
graciously thank each and every individual that helps to build
upon the Festival’s 27-year tradition.
Despite nearly three decades of musical excellence, the Lake
Tahoe Music Festival is not immune to the same financial
challenges that face other nonprofit organizations. But
weathering the nation’s economic storm this past year has
been far less trying thanks to the ongoing generous support
of our donors and the enthusiasm of our summer series ticket
purchasers. More importantly, the support we receive allows us
to continue to expand our Educational Outreach Programs.
Thank you again for being a part of the Lake Tahoe Music
Festival’s 2009 summer concert season. Sit back, relax and
enjoy the experience!
Stefanie Olivieri, President
Nearly two centuries ago the poet Goethe wrote,
“A man should hear a little music, read a little
poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life,
in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the
sense of the beautiful which God has implanted
in the human soul.”
Times are hard today, and yet his advice has never rang more
true. The perfect antidote for stress is art, and the perfect place
for that this summer is here at the Lake Tahoe Music Festival
where you can escape your troubles with jazz, classic rock,
the best of Broadway, and classical music. Relax and reconnect
to the beauty in the human soul.
Timm Rolek, Conductor
Hello and welcome to our 2009 season! After
our successful 2008 season and the enthusiastic
response we received, the Lake Tahoe Music
Festival wasted no time in planning for our 27th
event. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the
excitement surrounding our 2009 festival as we
bring six stellar performances to North Lake Tahoe for concerts
designed to tempt music lovers with a diversity of performances,
sounds and top-notch talent.
The non-profit festival’s roster for 2009 runs the gamut including
classic rock, smooth jazz and classical. Rock legend and singer/
songwriter Boz Scaggs and classic rock performers Huey Lewis
and The News bring their hits to our outdoor venues. Grammy-
nominated Fourplay and Yellowjackets featuring Mike Stern
fill the air with their classic smooth jazz sounds. The Reno
Philharmonic Orchestra helps us celebrate the classics with
returning special guests Rachel York and Sal Viviano performing
Broadway hits from Rodgers and Hammerstein and guitarist
Chris Kachian performing at the finale.
Over the years, the Lake Tahoe Music Festival has become a
valued summer tradition for visitors and locals alike. One of the
most important goals of the festival is our ability to continue to
fund our ongoing in-school Education Outreach Programs (EOP),
an element critical to aspiring young musicians.
Due to the generous contributions of our sponsors, the Lake
Tahoe Music Festival has increased its involvement with youth
and the connection it has with the community through our
EOP. Our mission is to attract new audiences to classical music
through education, exposure and programming for youth, adults
and seniors of the communities of Lake Tahoe. Our program aids
young musical artists and emerging ensembles, offering training,
guidance and concert presentation. This year, our programs
reached more than 1470 children…now that’s something we can
all be proud of.
We’ve also enhanced our festival experience. While here,
we hope you enjoy the selections from our newest partners,
Men Wielding Fire and Rodney Strong Vineyards, as well as
returning partner Coors, at many of our season’s concerts.
Plan on trying out the mouth-watering entrees conveniently
served right inside the festival gates with items including sliced
tri-tip, baby back ribs, pulled pork sandwiches or grilled salmon
with mango sauce, just to name a few. Our goal is to continue to
expand and fine tune the festival experience.
We have a lot to be proud of and we thank you for your ongoing
support. We’re anticipating a very exciting season and we’re glad
to see you here!
Lisa Krueger, Chief Executive Officer

vOLUNTEERSAs you enjoy this beautiful outdoor venue, take a moment and
think about what transpired to make this evening happen. The
planning, meetings and the support of the community has been
a huge effort for the many involved.
It comes down to people and we thank you for your support
and whatever plans that involved your coming to enjoy our
concert tonight.
Behind the scene has been and continues to be exciting from
every aspect. Our Music Festival would not be complete without
the work and dedication of our many volunteers. Again, it’s
the people. The Festival organization depends on nearly 100
volunteers primarily during the concert evening to organize the
flow of attendees to make your experience as comfortable as
possible from your car to your seat! It’s also important to realize
that many of these people work in the office answering phones
selling tickets as well as distributing posters in the community.
Volunteering is a rewarding contribution to any organization and
so many of our volunteers dedicate their time to many different
organizations in our area, which is what makes Lake Tahoe such
a special place. It’s comes down to the people!
Many of our volunteers have donated their time to the Lake
Tahoe Music Festival since 1990, and return with the same
cheerful attitude each year to bring about a special evening
for everyone. Yes, they enjoy the concert, but they enjoy
giving their time as well and that makes the entire experience
wonderful for everyone.
Our people, our volunteers…we thank each of you for your time
and service to the Lake Tahoe Music Festival.

Without its patrons, sponsors, and benefactors this music would

2008 / 2009 EdUCATiONAL OUTREACH PROGRAmThe Lake Tahoe Music Festival Educational Outreach Program
(EOP) is comprised of two components: a Fall and Spring Visiting
Artist program and the Truckee Youth Music Program (TYMP).
viSiTiNG ARTiST PROGRAmTwice a year the Lake Tahoe Music Festival brings professional
string or woodwind quartets to our local schools providing
students with invaluable learning opportunities. The programs,
held in October 2008 and March 2009, included three to six
school concerts, one to two public concerts and private and
semi-private student instruction. These presentations highlight
artistry, demonstration and techniques, such as bowing,
posturing, breathing and stage presence. In addition, student
players, parents and adult beginners of any age have the ability
to attend a Master Class. Selected students work with the
ensemble individually, attend a 30-minute class and then have the
opportunity to play with the ensemble.
fALL 2008 ANd STRiNG dAY – AfiARA STRiNG QUARTETA perennial favorite with students and teachers, the Afiara
String Quartet returned to perform for the Fall Visiting Artists
Program in October. Their school-wide performances at five
local elementary and middle schools displayed not only their
musical talent but their talent for relating their musical passion
to youth. On the following Saturday they held a highly attended
String Day and Master Class attracting 30 students of varying
ages and abilities for a day of string instruction and collective
music-making and culminating with a performance at Moody’s
restaurant in Truckee.
SPRiNG 2009 – THE SiERRA wOOdwiNd QUiNTET In April the Sierra Woodwind Quintet, comprised of Martha
Damon O’Neil on flute, David Ernst on oboe, Earline
McGrannahan on clarinet, Jamie Ernst on bassoon and Elizabeth
Lynner on French horn, visited the Tahoe-Truckee School District.
Presentations were in the intimate setting of the school band
rooms where students benefited from close observation of
the Quintet’s musical conversations and techniques. After the
performances of Mozart, Griege and Sir Malcom Arnold, in which
the Quintet demonstrated the difference between dissonance
and consonance, they held Master Classes at North Tahoe High
and Middle Schools and Truckee High School. The eight Master
Classes were given to students learning saxophone, oboe, clarinet
and trombone. The quintet gave constructive critiques to each
student and suggestions for improving technique and even
conquering stage fright!
TRUCkEE YOUTH mUSiC PROGRAmThe Truckee Youth Music Program (TYMP) provides free, private
and semi-private, after school music lessons, including musical
instruments, to students of local elementary schools in grades
3rd through 5th. TYMP specializes in assisting low-income
students and includes instruction in violin, clarinet, flute,
trumpet, oboe, saxophone or other desired instruments.
High school music student volunteers, under the direction
of a Program Director and a Student Director, teach weekly
private or semi-private, half-hour, after-school music lessons.
In exchange for their time, scholarships are awarded to those
student volunteers based on the number of hours they teach
and awarded upon graduation and enrollment into college or
continuing education.
TYMP also offers qualified elementary students opportunity
to continue their music education by providing paid private
instruction during the summer break or upon 5th grade
graduation.
The Student Director and High School Student volunteer teachers
are also eligible for additional paid private instruction during
the summer and/or opportunity to attend a music camp for
continuing their music education.
2008/2009 TYmP fiNAL PROGRAm As school let out on May 12th, the Truckee Elementary
gymnasium started to fill with students, parents and teachers
who came to enjoy the Truckee Youth Music Program’s final
spring recital. Eleven elementary students joined by TYMP
graduate students and Student Teachers took turns at the
microphone introducing themselves and telling the audience
what musical piece they were to play. Performances included
clarinet, a duet and solos on violin, piano and flute. We were
also treated to performances by TYMP graduate students that
are continuing their private music education with the support of
private donors and the Lake Tahoe Music Festival.
The Lake Tahoe Music Festival awarded graduating Student
Teachers $1,200 in scholarships this year. One graduate donated
their scholarship award to the Truckee High School music
program much to the surprise of its Director, Dave Green.
Our Student Director will also be attending a music camp
this summer.
The afternoon culminated with the Lake Tahoe Music Festival
handing out two free tickets to each of the TYMP students,
student teachers and TYMP graduates to attend the festival’s
“Broadway Night” with the Reno Philharmonic on July 30 at
Tahoe Donner. The tickets were part of the festival’s “Kids Free
Ticket Program.”
We encourage your support of the Lake Tahoe Music Festival’s
Educational Outreach Program as we further our development. To
become a supporter of the Festival’s EOP or for more information,

Timm ROLEk, CONdUCTORTimm Rolek is currently the Artistic Director and principal
conductor for Sacramento Opera, a post that he has held for the
past ten seasons. During his tenure, the company has seen a
growth in ticket sales, revenue and audience. This company is a
solid, regional level III company, which offers three productions
each season of three performances each in addition to an annual
concert and many educational and outreach events and activities.
In the now ever-changing economy, it is to his credit that he is
able to present both the familiar, standard operatic repertoire and
some works that are less familiar. His audiences trust both his
repertoire selections and his ability to balance and present casts
that offer the best of what is available in upand-coming artists.
His philosophy is that the opera/work is the most important; the
casts to populate and sing those works will follow.
In addition to his ongoing duties with Sacramento Opera,
Maestro Rolek has been a guest conductor with a number of
notable companies including Nevada Opera, Fargo-Moorhead
Opera, Skylight Opera Theatre, Rimrock Opera, Opera Delaware
and Chautauqua Opera. In addition, he held a staff position with
the Minnesota Opera and was a part of the conducting staff at
the Metropolitan Opera. This season with Sacramento Opera, he
will be at the helm for performances of The Pirates of Penzance,
Le nozze di Figaro and La Bohème. This is their first venture into
presenting one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s favoriteworks. During his
tenure with Sacramento Opera, he has developed relationships
with many directors for whom he has collaborated any number
of times. This is, in large part, a significant factor in much of the
success story that is Sacramento Opera today. Although, at this
writing, the 2009/10 season has not yet been announced, plans
are to present a possible early music work, a familiar standard
work and to do a double bill of a work that is well-known with
a contemporary piece garnering a lot of attention. More on that
will be divulged in the months to come.
Maestro Rolek is also the Artistic Director and Principle
Conductor for the Lake Tahoe Music Festival where, this
past summer (2008), included collaborating with the Reno
Philharmonic as well. From 1995 until 2005 Maestro Rolek was
the Music Director of the Grand Forks Symphony (ND. He returns
in 2009 for a program celebrating their 100th anniversary. He
formerly served as Music Director of the Heartland Symphony
(1993-1998) and has been a guest conductor with a number of
symphony orchestras as well.
Timm Rolek’s repertoire is wide-ranging for both the opera
stage and for symphony orchestras. His recordings include Jerre
Tanner’s The Kona Coffee Cantata with the Prague Chamber
Orchestra, and Joseph Fennimore’s Eventide (both on the Albany/
Troy label). He conducted the American premiere of Ernst
Krenek’s Das Geheime Koenigreich and has participated in the
Pierre Boulez / IRCAM composers and conductors workshop at
Carnegie Hall. Twin Cities Public Television KTCA-2 featured him
on their two time Emmy Award-winning program Arts on 2. In
conjunction with Northern Lights Public Radio, he produced a
nine-part radio-program called Music In Our Century. He has
served on a Lila Wallace / Reader’s Digest grant panel, Singer
Workshop panel for Opera America, has been a frequent judge
for competitions including the National Council Auditions for the
Metropolitan Opera.
After studying composition at the University of Minnesota,
Maestro Rolek studied conducting with Herbert Blomstedt,
Sir Neville Marriner, Klaus Tennstedt, and James Levine.
An avid water sports enthusiast, Rolek has participated in
both the Alcatraz Swim and the Pacific Cup sailboat race from
San Francisco to Hawaii.
RENO PHiLHARmONiC ASSOCiATiONThe orchestra, made up of over 60 local and talented musicians,
performs in Reno and in various outdoor and indoor venues.
The popular Master Classics Series is presented September
through April. The orchestra also presents over ten specialty
performances throughout the year from the holiday classic,
Spirit of the Season to 4th of July in Genoa. The Philharmonic
also boasts an impressive and diverse education department,
which includes two youth orchestras, a series of Young People’s
Concerts, Celebrate Strings program, and a Discover Music
program. The Reno Philharmonic Association’s mission is to
provide world-class, innovative musical performances and
exceptional educational and outreach programs that attract the

2009 GALA The stunning Brushwood Estate, located on the pristine West Shore of Lake Tahoe, once
again hosted our annual Opening Night Gala July 16, the official kick off to our 2009
summer concert series. Aptly themed “A Magical Mystery Tour,” the gala paid homage
to the Beatles with tribute band, The Sun Kings, while providing the Lake Tahoe Music
Festival an opportunity to thank our donors and encourage new patrons—all while
raising funds for our non-profit festival and our Educational Outreach Programs.
Thanks to the culinary creations of Executive Chef Mark Estee of Moody’s Bistro and
Lounge and fine wines courtesy of Rodney Strong Vineyards, the menu was rightly
themed from well known Beatles hits. The Quiet auction featured a plethora of highly
desirable items and the Lively auction items featured several one-of-a-kind items, such
as golf with rock legend Huey Lewis, and signed memorabilia from 2009 LTMF musicians
and the Beatles themselves.
Complimenting the theme, guests dressed elegantly with a touch of retro, and tables
were draped in Tahoe cobalt blue with fresh daisy centerpieces. The Beatles theme was
carried throughout with table numbers bearing street signs named after Beatles songs,
a card board cutout of an English phone booth for photo taking and souvenir trademark
John Lennon sun glasses for all attendees.
A big thank you to our premium benefactors for their continued support and to all first
time attendees. “A Magical Mystery Tour” was a success due to their commitment to
the Lake Tahoe Music Festival. Not able to attend this year? Details on becoming a
donor are available online at www.tahoemusic.org. We’ll see you in 2010!

fOURPLAYFor nearly two decades, the contemporary jazz quartet known as Fourplay has enjoyed
consistent artistic and commercial success by grafting elements of R&B, pop and a
variety of other sounds to their unwavering jazz foundations. In the course of ten
recordings – five of which have climbed to the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz
Album charts – the super group has continued to explore the limitless dimensions and
permutations of jazz while at the same time appealing to a broad mainstream audience.
The Fourplay story begins with keyboardist Bob James, who had already established
himself as a formidable figure in keyboard jazz – not just as an instrumentalist but as
a composer and arranger as well – with solo recordings dating as far back as the mid
1960s. He couldn’t have known that the 1990 recording sessions for his “Grand Piano
Canyon” album would lead to the formation of one of the most successful jazz groups
of the past two decades combining the talents of established musicians including
drummer Harvey Mason, bassist/vocalist Nathan East, guitarist Larry Carlton and James
on keyboards. The Grand Piano Canyon sessions marked the genesis of the group that
eventually came to be known as Fourplay. Their self-titled debut album was released in
1991, and included a blend of jazz, R&B and pop.
Over the years Fourplay has released numerous hit albums including “Elixir” in 1994, “4”
in 1998, “Snowbound,” a 1999 holiday album, and “Yes Please!,” an album that challenged
the standard definitions of contemporary jazz by incorporating elements of blues, funk
and even Celtic music. The group’s most recent album, “Energy,” earned a 2009 Grammy
Award nomination for the song “Fortune Teller.” In addition, the group has topped
Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Album charts with five of its 10 albums.

HUEY LEwiS ANd THE NEwSHuey Lewis and The News have been defying the rock odds makers for more than two
decades. Formed from two rival Bay Area bands in 1979, their contagious brand of
straight-ahead rock n’ roll has outlasted countless trends selling more than 20 million
albums worldwide in the process. Huey Lewis & The News has carried the banner as
the quintessential American rock band, endearing the musicians to millions of fans and
earning their place on the pop history map.
These Grammy Award winners have written and performed such classic Top Ten Hits
as “Heart of Rock & Roll,” “Stuck With You,” “I Want A New Drug,” “If This Is It,”
“Hip To Be Square” and “Workin’ For A Livin’.” The group also wrote and performed
“The Power of Love” and “Back in Time” for the hit film Back To The Future.
“The Power of Love,” which was nominated for an Academy Award, went all the way
to #1 on Billboard’s singles chart.
As great a recording career as the band has had, it’s their live performances that remain
the stuff of legend. They have continued to tour doing approximately 60-70 shows
a year. Huey Lewis & The News have incorporated a variety of musical influences,
including R&B and soul, to create their own unique sound. A show highlight their a
cappella rendition of early rock n’ roll classics such as “Sixty Minute Man”, “Under The
Boardwalk” and “It’s Alright..
Huey Lewis & The News are: Huey Lewis (vocals and harmonica), Johnny Colla
(saxophone, guitar and vocals), Bill Gibson (drums, percussion and vocals), Sean Hopper
(keyboards and vocals), Stef Burns (guitars and vocals) and John Pierce (bass). Their live
show features a horn section of San Francisco Bay Area luminaries: Marvin McFadden

bOz SCAGGS With soulful songs that float between the genres of rock, R&B and jazz, Boz Scaggs has
won acclaim from music industry insiders beginning with his first release in 1965 and
continuing on through 18 solo albums. The singer and musician has been associated with
some of the most incendiary talents of the rock era, including the Marksmen featuring
Steve Miller during the late ‘50s and early ‘60s and the Steve Miller Band in the mid-
1960s. His 1969 album, “Boz Scaggs,” has achieved a kind of legendary cult status for the
extended blues foray “Loan Me A Dime,” featuring an incendiary guitar solo by the late
Duane Allman.
Scaggs’ commercial breakthrough didn’t come until 1976’s “Silk Degrees,” an album that
spawned several hit singles including “Lowdown,” “Lido Shuffle,” “Georgia,” “We’re All
Alone” and “It’s Over,” reached number two on the Billboard album chart, and eventually
sold over 4 million copies. It also brought Scaggs a Grammy award: “Lowdown,” which
he co-wrote with David Paich, was voted Best R&B song.
Scaggs took a break from the music scene between 1980 and 1988, but returned with a
steady stream of albums including his most recent, the emotion-drenched “Speak Low”
released in 2008. Scaggs recorded the album, a collection of jazz standards, with a goal
of creating an intimate and textural sound using a complete orchestra. Song highlights
include Duke Ellington’s “Do Nothing Til You Hear From Me,” and Chet Baker’s “She Was
Too Good to Me.”

Combine the ground-breaking sounds of jazz quartet the Yellowjackets with the
innovative style of guitarist Mike Stern and hear two powerful forces collide. Uniting for
several explosive performances at 2007’s Montreal Jazz Festival, the Yellowjackets and
Mike Stern traveled diverse and dynamic musical paths before merging onstage and for
“Lifecycle,” a studio collaboration that was one of the most innovative and memorable
jazz albums of 2008. The first Yellowjackets recording in 15 years to feature a guitar
player, “Lifecycle” illustrates the kind of energy and creative brilliance that results when
five talented players pool their individual skills as songwriters and musicians and merge
into an entity that’s far greater than the sum
THE YELLOwJACkETS The Yellowjackets, together for more than 25 years, originally assembled as backup
musicians for the Robben Ford Group before branching off and releasing a self-titled
debut in 1981. Their exploratory and often improvisational jazz crosses genres including
world music and acoustic sounds and features keyboards, bass, drums and tenor
saxophone. The band has a steady stream of albums including “Mint Jam,” recorded
live at the Mint in Los Angeles in July 2001 and released the following year. The two-
disc set was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. The
Yellowjackets are keyboardist Russell Ferrante, bassist Jimmy Haslip, drummer Marcus
Baylor and tenor saxophonist Bob Mintzer.
mikE STERNMike Stern is no ordinary guitar player. The axe-man has had more than a dozen eclectic
and innovative recordings in his three-decade career, four Grammy nominations and
Guitar Player magazine’s 1993 Guitar Player of the Year award. Early in his career, Stern
played three years with Blood, Sweat & Tears before he was tapped by Miles Davis to
play in Davis’ 1981 comeback band then appeared on three Davis recordings including
“Man With the Horn,” “Star People” and the live album “We Want Miles.” Stern has also
performed with jazz master Jaco Pastorius and artists such as banjoist Bela Fleck, bassist
Richard Bona and saxophonist Kenny Garrett.

mARGERY TEdEMusic was Margery Tede’s great joy and passion, and she
brought that passion to the Lake Tahoe Music Festival in its
earliest years. Working with the Festival in the late 70s and early
80s she brought Virgil Thomson and his opera, “The Mother
of Us All,” to Lake Tahoe. She also brought “The Ballad of Baby
Doe” and other operatic performances of more traditional
scope. From her second home, Tahoe Tavern, she was anything
but idle, performing and urging other talented people along.
Margery embarked on her musical studies with her mother,
pianist Jean Crockett. Graced with a luminous mezzo-soprano
voice, she began her professional singing career with the San
Francisco Opera under the direction of Kurt Herbert Adler,
and was a graduate of the prestigious Merola Program. Her
debut was as Suzuki in “Madama Butterfly,” and other critically
acclaimed roles included Judith in “Bluebeard’s Castle,” Azucena
in “Il Trovatore” and Augusta Tabor in “Ballad of Baby Doe.”
Her symphonic solo performances included the San Francisco
Symphony under the direction of Seji Ozawa and the Artpark
Summer Festival in New York under the direction of
Christopher Keene.
Throughout her professional life, Margery promoted the works
of contemporary composers. She was a long time friend of Virgil
Thompson, and along with Charles Shere, published a collection
of his correspondence with Bay Area colleagues, “Everbest Ever.”
Margery’s voice recordings include “Virgil Thompson” and “Songs
of the Silverado.
Margery was a great supporter of young musicians. She was
a founder and president of the American Concert Association,
which provides scholarship funds to aspiring artists, and taught
piano and voice in her San Francisco studio. In addition to her
role with the Lake Tahoe Music Festival she was also instrumental
in forming the Napa Valley Music Association and taught voice
in Yountville.

Gravitte, born in Los Angeles, inherited the love of Broadway from
her mother and headed east to New York where she earned her

on to appear in “Perfectly Frank,” which earned her a Drama Desk
Award nomination, along with “Blues in the Night,” “Ain’t Broadway
Grand,” “Zorba,” “Chicago” and “Les Miserables.” She’s also traveled
the globe with her nightclub act, from New York’s Rainbow and
Stars to London’s Pizza on the Park and back home again to Atlantic
City, where she’s performed with Jay Leno, Harry Anderson and the
legendary George Burns.
Gravitte recently toured with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops
