SEASON PREVIEW
COMET SOFTBALL SENIORS LOOKING TOLEAVE A MARK IN THEIR FINAL YEAR
The 2009 Olivet College softball season should prove to be an interestingone, especially if the Comet seniors have anything to say about it.
Eight seniors are expected to suit up for Olivet this season, and they havehigh hopes of leading the program to new heights. They have aspirations ofestablishing a new single-season school record for wins and qualifying for theMichigan Intercollegiate Athletic Assoication (MIAA) Tournament in May.
The senior class includes infielders Cassie Bowerman (Quincy), BethDeLora (Muskegon/Oakridge), Amanda Egmer (Constantine) and KacieRosecrants (Parma/Western), catcher Felicia Smith (Spring Lake) and outfieldersKacey Darling (Hartford) and Heidi Wear (Hastings/Wayland Union). The quintetof Bowerman, Darling, Egmer, Rosecrants and Wear are four-year players, whilethe other three -- Braner, DeLora and Smith -- transferred to Olivet after startingtheir college careers elsewhere.
“These programs have been in the program long enough now that they havea great feel for how each other plays,” said Head Coach James Farnum, who wonhis 100th game at Olivet last spring. “They also have a great understanding of ourconcepts and strategies, which I really saw them exhibit on the field during our fallpractices.
“I am really looking forward to watching these ladies play the game the waythey are capable of this year. It should be a pretty exciting season.”
INFIELDLast year, Bowerman started 26
games at second base, while DeLoraalso saw playing time at second when shewas not in the pi tching circ le. Thisseason, expect to see Bowerman gettingthe majority of the playing time at second, while DeLora slides over to first base.
Rosecrants has been the startingshortstop in 97-of-102 career gamesplayed. She has a career .302 battingaverage and needs just six more hits tobecome only the third player in schoolhistory with more than 100 career hits.
Over the last two seasons, Branerhas made 67 starts at third base. She hasalso been the leadoff batter for themajority of the starts and is a .313 careerhitter. Last year, Braner walked 17 timesto break the Olivet single-season record.
Egmer has played in 15 careervarsity games and is another choice toplay second base.

Now Open!The Cutler Event Center
Thanks to the generosity of Dave Cutler, a 1965 Olivet alumnus, TheOlivet College Cutler Event Center is now open. Cutler contributed twodonations totaling $4.3 million toward the $5.1 million facility.
According to Cutler, his support of the center was given in recognitionof Olivet’s 1961 football team. That year, he was the starting quarterbackand led the Comets to one of their best overall records in school history at8-1.
“Olivet College is very fortunate to have an alumnus such as DaveCutler, who has taken on a tremendous responsibility by funding themajority of the events center,” said Olivet President Don Tuski.
“This is truly a monumental gift that helps Olivet maintain a competitiveedge with other colleges and universities. The entire Olivet Collegecommunity is grateful for Dave Cutler’s outstanding support through theyears.”
The 44,500-square-foot multipurpose facility was added on to theexisting athletic building at the Cutler Athletic Complex. It is being usedby the college and community for activities ranging from athletic events to
commencement exercises, student events, guest speakers, concerts andconferences. The new facility includes a fitness center, 100-meter track, locker rooms, coaches’ offices and wrestling room.
Olivet’s men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestlingprograms use the facility for practices and competition. In addition, thesoftball and baseball teams can use the batting cages for extra practice. All of the college’s 18 NCAA Division III athletic programs use the centerfor off-season workouts and conditioning.
A native of DeWitt, Cutler is a noted software engineer and designerwith Microsoft and holds more than 20 patents. After arriving at Microsoftin 1988, he launched the Windows NT group and has since led thedevelopment of three major releases of the product. In addition to leadingthe Windows 2000 team, Cutler contributed to the architecture of all partsof the system. In recognition of his significant contributions to the field,Cutler was awarded membership in the National Academy of Engineeringin 1993.
