EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS2
Welcome to Equal Justice Works 25th Anniversary Gala!
Thank you for joining us as we celebrate the accomplishments of this incredible organization and its 25 years of mobilizing law students and lawyers to work for justice on behalf of underserved communities and causes. We especially want to thank all of you who continue to support Equal Justice Works to ensure that the organization remains a powerful voice for the next 25 years. Thanks also to the staff of Equal Justice Works, our many partners, our member law schools and students who are the innovators of our programming and continuously seek to improve the impact of our initiatives.
In 1986, Equal Justice Works was founded by law students from 14 law schools who had a dream of expanding legal services to under-represented people and increasing opportunities for law students and graduates to practice in the field of public interest. Today, Equal Justice Works has grown to become a significant national player in the legal nonprofit community, with 200 law school members, a summer program with 700 students, 170 lawyers in the field fighting against injustice, and more than 1,000 former Fellows who continue to work full-time in public service.
Tonight is more than just celebrating the past it is about the future. Today, more than ever before, we need to ensure that Equal Justice Works can provide more opportunities for lawyers committed to public interest law and to helping those communities who need it most.
Again, thank you for your support. We hope you enjoy the evening.

Across the country, public defender offices are underfunded, understaffed, and drowning in untenable caseloads. With too few public defenders handling too many cases, those who cannot afford representation are being denied their fundamental right to counsel, and many are languishing in jail at taxpayers expense. Equal Justice Works and the Southern Public Defender Training Center have launched the Public Defender Corps to combat this crisis by placing exceptional lawyers in hard-pressed public defender
programs, providing these lawyers with intensive training and support. The ultimate aim is to raise the quality of representation and ensure that indigent defendants have access to justice.
