PRES IDENT ’ S LETTERThe year 2012 marked the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, whichwas the focus for the museum’s exhibits, lectures and programs through-out the year. The Museum continued MARBLEHEAD 101, following itsinitiative to preserve, protect and promote Marblehead’s unique history. The Federal period at the turn of the 19th century and the War of 1812were themes for all exhibits, the March membership campaign, theOctober Annual Appeal, and for lectures and activities.

The first exhibit of the year Marblehead in 1812: the Federal Periodpresented the period after the American Revolution, when the UnitedStates defined itself as a new country. The ideals that were important tothe new nation were expressed in the arts as well as in politics.Architecture, art and even fashion reflected the view of America as the“new Athens,” with classical themes. The exhibit presented examples ofthe Federal period from the Marblehead Museum’s extensive collections. The Annual Meeting of the Marblehead Museum took place in April atAbbot Hall, and featured George Daughn, best selling author of 1812:The Navy’s War. The Spring Lecture Series sponsored for the second ofthree years by Marble Harbor Investment Counsel followed the themewith Bob Booth’s lecture on Joseph Story. Other aspects of Marbleheadhistory were popular as well, especially Marblehead’s First Harbor lectureand book signing by Brenda Bishop Booma and Hugh Bishop. The fallexhibit, Marblehead the War of 1812, explored Marblehead’s history dur-ing that war, and its importance both nationally and locally. The U.S.S.Constitution was significant in Marblehead’s history, and over fortyMarbleheaders served on board the vessel during the war. The fall lectureseries was outstanding, featuring 6 lectures about the War of 1812. Localhistorians and War of 1812 specialists spoke, including Don Doliber,“From Russia With Love” Marblehead Trade Before 1812, who spoke onhis research in the Museum’s archives on Marblehead trade in the early19th century. Standley Goodwin presented the lead up and overview tothe war, Prelude to the War of 1812. Two U.S.S. Constitution scholars,Martthew Brenckle, Curator at the Constitution Museum, andMarguerita Desy, U.S. Naval Historian spoke about Marblehead’s con-nections to the Constitution. Marblehead author Eric Jay Dolan, WhenAmerica First Met China, spoke about the China Trade and the influencesof the War of 1812 on it. The last lecture of 2012 was at Abbot Hall, offered at no charge, as a part of our commitment to education and schol-arship. Marbleheader Rob Goodwin, Elbridge Gerry: Marblehead’sForgotten Son, debuted his new book, based in part on research done inthe Museum archives.

Community collaboration continues to be a major focus for theMuseum. The partnership with the Marblehead Family Fund began sixyears ago with the Lee Mansion Gingerbread Festival, and has expandedto include the Pumpkin Illumination and the Ice Cream Social. Some ofthe many other community connections include events with theMarblehead Little Theater, the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce,Marblehead Cable Access TV, the Rotary of Marblehead Harbor and theMarblehead Public Schools. Beyond Marblehead, the Museum collabo-rates with the Essex National Heritage Commission for Trail and Sails,Salem State University, Salem Theater, the New England MuseumAssociation, and Hospice of the North Shore.

TREASURER ' S REPORTThe Museum finished the year in good financial condition thanks to amodest growth in income and sound expense management. Thus, froma purely financial standpoint the Museum is in fine shape with the com-bination of its professional staff, the endowment committee and theBoard working well on maintaining the Museum’s integrity and focus onkeeping Marblehead’s rich history alive and well. Clearly, the endow-ment fund is a critical component of sustaining our day to day opera-tions and future stability. An important responsibility of the Board is tosafeguard the endowment not only thru sound management but alsokeeping our annual transfer from the endowment at or below 5%. Theendowment committee, which is comprised of local professionals, hasserved the Museum well and the 2012 transfer was below our target.

Although pleased with our overall financial results we need toreflect on the fact that we have been, for an extended period of time, under investing in our primary assets including the Lee Mansion, theGAR and our wonderful archived collection. Looking forward we needto continue to maximize our income generation capabilities includingredoubling our efforts to expand our membership base while at the sametime cultivating individuals capable of expanding and increaseing theAnnual Appeal. In a major new initiative we will use the power of theinternet (social media tools like Facebook) to expand our outreach no tonly to promote our events and lectures but also build our membership.Using the same tools the Museum will also work at identifying individ-uals whose interests and passion might include Georgian Architecture(Lee Mansion) or Civil War institutions like the GAR. The result will bethat the Museum will cast a broader financial net. We are a local entitybut we wish to think more nationally or globally in terms of generatinginterest and support.

Starting in late 2012 the Museum’s board and staff commenced amajor review of these treasurers and this effort has resulted in the cre-ation of a Strategic Plan which outlines various key initiatives. A GARAssessment and the review of our archival space are on the top of theBoard’s agenda. Committees have been formed with guidance and direc-tion from our professional staff with the GAR review evolving quicklyas a result of the elevator project at the Old Town House renovationnears completion. This project will require new funding. Again, we aremoving in a new direction regarding fund raising. Under the belief thatindividuals like to be identified with specific projects we will seek toidentify individuals who will see their own interest fulfilled in one ofthese initiatives. We are currently using our skills and knowledge re theinternet to seek individuals who identify with and are likely to supportthese projects.

2013 is anticipated to be a year of accelerating change, outreach, and the successful completion of several key initiatives outlined in ourStrategic Plan. The Museum is energized and seeks your continued sup-port. As we like to say, “We all own Marblehead’s rich history.”

Fundraising events are an important part of every year, providingmembers and friends with an opportunity to support the Museum andenjoy themselves as well. 2012 was a great year forcreative and successful events presented by eventschair Diane Barbour. The Star Spangled Pops, chaired by Rick Settelmeyer, featured a War of 1812musical theme. The Online Auction, chaired by SharonThibodeau, Pam Cassidy and Kim Downing, with terrific supportby Business and Development Director Lynne Paschetag, was a greatsuccess. The Lee Mansion FUNdraising Party, chaired by SharonPingree-Russell and Karyn Lang kicked off the Lee Mansion summer sea-son. The Annual Garden Party coincided with Marblehead’s MaritimeFestival on a lovely summer evening in August. A new event, A Taste ofthe 18th Century in the Lee Mansion, was conceived by Curator KarenMac Innis and resulted in outstanding fundraising, led by RickSettelmeyer, for the conservation of the Lee Mansion’s demi-lune win-dow. Appreciation for the volunteer support that these and all our activ-ities represent was celebrated at our annual Volunteer AppreciationHoliday Party, graciously hosted at the lovely home of Jean and DickCarlson.

The Museum took a rare political stand in 2012, actively lobbyingfor voter support of the installation of an elevator in the Old TownHouse to make the building accessible to all. The Museum’s G.A.R andCivil War Museum is housed on the second floor, and has been openmuch more in the last few years, but handicapped access will be of ben-efit to all who want to enjoy this historic building. Led by MarbleheadMuseum President Richard Carlson, and supported by Board memberAmy Drinker, the override was successful and work is now underway. The Old Marblehead Improvement Association recognized the efforts ofDick Carlson and Amy Drinker with awards at their Annual Meeting.

MARBLEHEAD 101 continues to provide an overall theme andstructure by which to interpret and celebrate Marblehead’s unique his-tory. The MARBLEHEAD 101 weekly newspaper column in theMarblehead Reporter, and now online, is very popular and also fulfilsour mission to promote the history of Marblehead.

Three years ago in a response to a challenge we formed a commit-tee under the leadership of VP Lynne Ambrose to identify MarbleheadPatriots who participated in the Revolutionary War. After hours andhours of research of innumerable sources the committee identified over1,000 patriots with associations to Marblehead, an incredible numbersince Marblehead at that time had only 1,500 registered voters.

The Marblehead Museum continues to need funding for programsto maintain the Lee Mansion, the Collections, and the Civil WarMuseum. Members are vital to our mission to preserve protect and pro-mote Marblehead’s unique history. For the many who do support us,thank you. Your efforts help to sustain what has become an integralpart of living in Marblehead.
