Summer is here and if you have procrastinated, there is still time to plan that
vacation. If it is not in the cards for you to travel, however, why not have some local fun with community organizations that were created with that in mind? For families that enjoy swimming or tennis, Dan Chapman, manager of the Almaden Swim & Racquet Club, is promoting their lovely swim and tennis facilities just in time for the upcoming sweltering summer months. Now to experience a resort without leaving the neighborhood, the
Almaden Country Club has various social memberships available to the right prospects, which include fine dining, family activities such as swimming, tennis, and ocassional golf. The facility will be upgrading soon, so now is the time to get on board. Full memberships with all the benefits you expect from a highend country club can be also be purchased, for the serious golfer. If you just want to enjoy a friendly meal locally, there is savings offered in this issue from Elements Restaurant, Taco Al Pastor, and UNWINED. It is always enjoyable to have a nice dining experience without a mess left at home in the kitchen and without having to leave the neighborhood, so support these establishments. Speaking of local small businesses, the fashion trends (from The Studio boutique) continue to impress as the talented Jill Amen provided personal shopping services prior to our editor photo shoot once again, after this one stop wonder boutique in Almaden finished my coiffeur. To those that wonder, “Yes, I recommend their blow outs, as they are two for two this issue and last with my hair styling, and they also did a fabulous job on my daughter prior to her Junior prom and senior ball photos.” The boutique also offers fabulously fun gift shopping and gift cards for all ocassions. If you are looking for an alternative way to spend your free time, or perhaps you are a local sports enthusiast, Bret Harte Middle School is currently attempting to fill many coaching positions. It certainly sounds enjoyable, so contact them if interested.
The politicians and San Jose Police Department seem to have solutions to decrease the local crime rate, so keep the activisim, awareness and communications rolling. Please read the relevent article in this issue to ensure you are individually taking appropriate precautions. If you are still concerned, join the ALMADEN CRIME WATCH group at www.95120lifestyle.com to colaborate, begin neighborhood watch programs, share ideas and perhaps post crime reports for review. View the Save the Date events as these programs want your support, business or social awareness. There are also several entertaining expertise columns this issue so enjoy, as they may become staples. There are many exciting events coming up such as the inaugural elementary Almaden choir at South Hills Church, so you can look forward to some photos and coverage in the next issue. Almaden’s Leland High School Alumni Success Stories
Rachel Kabel Molly CuevasOn April 7, 2013, Rachel Kabel ran in the San Luis Obispo (SLO)
Marathon and placed 3rd overall in the female category and placed 2nd in her age group (19-26). She just turned 19 on April
2nd. She is the youngest female to place in the SLO Marathon. Prior to this event, Rachel had never run in a marathon or half marathon. There were 675 participants who completed the marathon and 2,289 participants who completed the half-marathon. With the time of 3:30:10 minutes she automatically qualified for the Boston Marathon. She had no trainer or coach to help her with this amazing 26.2-mile marathon accomplishment. Rachel has lived in Almaden her entire life and graduated from Leland High School in 2012 with a valedictorian award. She is currently attending her first year at Cal Poly University as a Business Major, averaging a 3.95 GPA and plays on the field hockey club team. She played field hockey 4 years at Leland High School and was the Captain in her Junior & Senior Year, League MVP 2010, 1st Team All-League 2010 & 2011 and Most Outstanding One-Sport Athlete 2012. Rachel’s family and friends are very proud of her. We asked Rachel to share some advice for high school students currently working on the college or university application process. Here is what she had to share:
“My advice for high school seniors in the application process would be to create a realistic set of schools to apply to. Make sure you apply to some colleges you know you’ll get into, a few that could go either way, and then a few reach schools. Keep your list at a reasonable number and only apply to schools you can actually see yourself going to! It will save you a lot time, money and stress.”
After a successful Leland High School experience, Molly Cuevas set her goals toward The Big Apple… New York. In the years prior to college, her athletic success in Field Hockey and Soccer gained her
national attention and recognition. In due course, Molly gladly selected the highly reputable Adelphi University on Long Island, New York, to play Field Hockey on a combined merit and athletic scholarship. This has proven to be her ultimate challenge to date. She now literally attends the mecca for field hockey, at the oldest institution of higher education on Long Island, where she plays with and against the cream of the crop in her sport. In her first year at the school, Molly’s regular season play earned her the prestigious honor of Northeast 10 Conference Rookie of the Year. She was also named First Team All-Conference, and was the only freshman to be selected. During Molly’s 1st season, The Adelphi Panthers earned the fourth seed in the Conference Championship. Although this team was eliminated in the second round, her dominant play in the Tournament Championship landed her on the All-Tournament Team. Concluding just her first season, ultimate recognition came from Synapse Sports, which placed Molly on the National Division II All-Rookie Team. Once the field hockey season was over, Molly continued to focus on her studies and settling in as a college student. She is pursuing a Sports Management Major and has landed on the Dean’s List already as a Freshman, which was one of her first priorities. “Molly has taken our Adelphi community by storm! Achieving immediate success on and off the field, as she was named to the National Field Hockey All-Academic Team, Molly is what we refer to as a ‘program changer’, a young woman with maturity,

tenacity and leadership skills that are beyond reproach!” says Adelphi Head Coach Gloria O’Connor. As Molly is soaking up her east coast experience and travel, she’s still a California girl at heart. Molly has earned and is certainly ready for her summer break, eager to once again hang out with friends and family along our beautiful Pacific coast beaches. That is, when she’s not on the Leland High School field practicing! As we were finishing this issue of 95120 Magazine, the Adelphi University annual athletic banquet was held and Molly received yet another award. This time the award was for “the top freshman female award for 2013.”
“Senior year is an amazing and fun time, make it your best but also take time to plan for your future. Listen to those that are closest to you...yes even your parents.” Molly Cuevas

Sometimes, when you realize you need a good lawyer, accountant or other business specialist, that’s also the time when you realize you don’t know one and you also don’t know where to start looking. Here are a few tips:
1. Ask the right people – If you need a business attorney, accountant or busi-ness coach, go to the top five or six successful businesspeople you know, and ask for recommendations. Those targeted references will not only help you avoid sifting through a pile of names, but they will also provide you with contacts that they have already used and evaluated. If those five or six businesspeople don’t know the right person, they may still refer you to another qualified referrer – for example, if none knew a good divorce attorney, they can still refer you to me (even though I don’t handle divorces), and I can, in turn, get you to the right person.
2. Ask the right questions – Once you have some names, don’t be shy about screen-ing them carefully. For lawyers, check at www.calbar.org to see how long they have been licensed and whether they have any disciplinary actions against them. Simi-larly, accountants/ CPAs can be looked up at www.dca.ca.gov/cba/lookup.shtml. Ask them what experience they have in your industry or working on your kind of project. What do they charge? Do they work on an hourly basis, or can they per-form some tasks on a flat rate? Will they do the work personally, or will they task it out to someone else in the office?
3. Price is not the only criteria – Don’t be cheap! No one wants to pay more than they have to, but don’t base your decision only on price. A lower hourly rate means nothing if it takes your inexperienced service provider longer to complete the tasks. Carefully consider their experience and skills as well as their rates. More experience may result in a lower bill overall.
4. Make good use of their services –Again…Don’t be cheap! Bringing in someone who has an expertise you lack is only valuable if you use them. Set up regular times to meet with them, and help them understand your business. Being proactive will not only help you save money by avoiding mistakes, but the added expertise may also help your business grow faster. You can often negotiate a lower hourly rate if you commit to a minimum usage each month.
5. Don’t spend it all in one place – Consider using multiple attorneys. A good local attorney can handle most of what you need less expensively and more quickly, but specialists may be a good value when you are faced with a unique problem. Once you find a generalist you trust, they can help you locate those specialists when needed. Beware of anyone who tells you they can handle it all!
6. Trust your gut – Before you hire someone, ask yourself some questions: Does this advisor seem to be trustworthy and knowledgeable? Do they seem like the right fit for your personality? After you get your first bill, ask yourself more questions: Did the bill come in with a cost about where you expected it would? Do you feel like you received excellent value for what you are paying? Did it seem like it was worthwhile hiring them? Trust your instinct!
7. Continually evaluate their value – Do you think they have the potential to pay for themselves, by helping you earn more money, helping you save more money, or helping you avoid mistakes that could cost you money? If they cannot deliver value far above what you are paying them, terminate them and find a new service provider. Weak performers will not get better over time. It’s best to just move on.

12 | 95120 Almaden Lifestyle Magazine
Chrissy Derksen of 95120 Magazine requested my office’s assistance in providing the public with crime statistics in Almaden as well as crime prevention tips, because she has had specific requests from her readership. I appreciate the opportunity to help her ensure her readers have the facts and are aware of strategies to reduce and prevent crime. Crime and public safety are the top concerns that I hear from District 10 residents. Incidents have increased throughout California, especially after the State reduced its prison population by more than 40,000 inmates in recent years. As you can see from the chart above, the total number of “Priority One” (violent) crimes was down in 2012 from 2008 and 2009. “Priority Two” (property) crimes have increased an average of about 14% from 2008-2012. The Crime Analysis Unit does not have the capability to provide crime statistics by ZIP code, but the numbers for the 95120 area are much lower than those above for Council District 10 as a whole. So what is happening? The SJPD Police Academy Class 18 graduated in March, the first class funded since 2009, and the 43 cadets from that class have started their field training. Another class has started in April, and the City Council approved additional, expanded academies – up to two per year for up to 60 recruits - over the next five years. The SJPD leadership and City Manager’s Office are identifying strategies to recruit new police officers and retain experienced police officers in order to bring staffing levels back to the 1,109 positions budgeted. The City Manager’s Proposed Operating Budget for Fiscal year 2013-2014 includes the opening of the South San Jose Police Substation that was built with voter-approved bonds but has remained unopened since its completion in 2008. This is something that I have advocated for because it will inprove response times, increase the amount of time patrol officers can be on the beat instead of commuting back and forth to downtown, make it easier for officers who live in South San Jose, Morgan Hill, Gilroy and other South County cities and who work in the Southern Patrol Division to get to their briefings, have their vehicles maintained and refueled, and more. The City Manager also included in her draft budget other proposals that I support to boost the capacity of the Police Department, such as:• adding21CommunityServiceOfficerstoassistwith“non-sworn”serviceslike
interviewing witnesses, photographing crime scenes, collecting evidence, taking telephone reports, conducting follow-up investigations, and fingerprinting;
• adding3CrimePreventionSpecialistswhocanassistwithpresentationsandmeetings on crime and burglary prevention, Neighborhood Watch, and more;
• adding1CrimeAnalysttobetteranalyzedata;• improvingtheDepartment’srecordsmanagementsystemforefficiency;• allocatingfundingtoPoliceOvertimeReservetobackfillvacantPDpositions.
Thanks to the excellent work of our police officers and the cooperation of residents, major crimes in the 95120 area have been investigated and solved. There are a number of precautions you can take to help keep your home and neighborhood safer. The SJPD Crime Prevention Unit recommends the following tips for preventing burglaries and break-ins:• Makeyourhomelookoccupied, andmakeitdifficulttobreakin.• Lockalloutsidedoorsandwindowsbeforeyouleavethehouseorgotobed,
even if leaving for only a short time. • Leavelightsonwhenyougoout.Considerconnectingsomelampsto

devices as necessary. Consider dowels, etc. to place in the track of sliding windows and doors to block entry from outside.
• Pushbuttonlocksondoorknobsareeasyforburglarstoopen.Installdeadboltlocks on outside doors. Check w/ hardware store for window lock alternatives.
• Slidingglassdoorsarevulnerable.Speciallocksareavailableforbettersecurity.
For MORE tips visit: http://www.sjpd.org/BFO/Community/Crimeprev/PreventionTips/Prevent_Burglary.html One of the most effective tools to prevent crime is to be vigilant and to know your neighbors. Establish positive relationships and look out for one another. If people know that neighbors are keeping an eye on the neighborhood, they are more likely to move on to easier targets. If you see vehicles or people hanging around that you don’t recognize, don’t hesitate to call the police. Some residents in the District have even installed security cameras around their homes and around the neighborhood to help catch thieves and other criminals. The video recordings can be used as evidence in police investigations and have helped the SJPD in two recent burglary investigations. One of the most important things we can do as residents is to take an active role in helping to protect ourselves and our neighborhoods from crime. My office can connect you with the Police Department’s Crime Prevention staff who offer instruction on how to fight crime and vandalism in your neighborhood and how to establish Neighborhood Watch groups in your community.
Please feel free to contact my office at [email protected] or at 408-535-4910 if my staff or I can be of assistance to you.by District 10 Councilmember Johnny Khamis

All homes sold must have working smoke and carbon mon-oxide detectors properly installed. This paragraph reprint from Consumer Reports is worth reading. Our tests of 25 alarms show that effective protection from fire and CO remains far too complicated. For example, smoke alarms that use ionization technology were great at detecting a fast, flaming fire such as burning paper, but poor at detecting a smoldering fire, as in a couch or mattress. The opposite was true of photoelectric smoke alarms. A few alarms combine ionization and photoelectric technologies to cover both types of fire, but they don’t detect CO (carbon monoxide). And those that combine CO and smoke detection are effective for either type of fire, but not both. Take the right steps to protect your home and family. If you are considering selling your home, give me a call and let’s discuss what I can do for you.

get fit, lose fat and gainstrength for over 20 years.
MRT, What the…? What is MRT? Metabolic resistance training as simply as possible is this: How much work can you do in how little time? That’s it. It’s the speed element that does it—managing to do more and more work in less and less time. This makes for incomplete recovery and thoroughly taps your energy stores. By doing this, MRT raises the metabolic “cost” of exercise. Running and most cardio will use up to 10 or 20% of your body’s energy making capacity. Traditional resistance training might tap 25 or 30% of the body’s capacity. MRT can demand 75-90% of your potential and stimulate metabolic forces all day and night. By taxing your body’s capacity, you dig deeper into your body’s storage of metabolic energy producing products, calories, and fuel, and stimulate significant improvements in only weeks. MRT spreads improvement across multiple targets. This way MRT can help you build muscle, burn fat and gain strength, all at the same time.
20 Minutes Fast is Better than an Hour Slow Intensity and duration are inversely proportional. Exercising for long periods means lowering the intensity. But, if you want to burn fat, and look lean, hot, and toned, turn up the intensity! Kicking up the intensity is like pushing down the accelerator—you burn more gas much quicker!
EPOC - Your best ally! EPOC means Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption. It’s the increased metabolic rate, or “after burn,” that you get from a particularly intense workout. EPOC is the energy that your body expends trying to return to a normal state after your workout is over. This zone is where the real fat burning takes place. The higher intensity, the longer and higher your metabolic after burn. It’s that simple.
Ever notice people that do lots of cardio never lose that last 10 lbs? Notice the difference between marathoners and sprinters. Sprinters are lean and muscular. Marathoners have trouble keeping their body fat down. I tell them they’ll lose more fat and get more toned and in better condition if they cut back their mileage and jack up the intensity. They look at me like I have two heads! Contrary to conventional fitness wisdom and popular belief, running, and slow cardio in general, is mediocre as a method of fat loss, and a complete failure as a conditioning tool. Besides the pounding to the joints, it’s counterproductive to all your purposes in fitness, and it’s actually not even all that great for the heart!
Exercise for fat loss = MRT and high intensity interval training! MRT builds muscle, burns fat, and improves overall conditioning all at the same time. It might as well be called “madman training.” It’s no-holds-barred, haul-ass, max-effort, torch-fat, heavy-weight, huff-n-puff training. It’ll spike your metabolism, eat calories, lift your lactate threshold, boost lean toned muscle, and maximize your body’s capacity against real world challenges. I get winded just rattling off MRT’s benefits. MRT combines intense, efficient muscular training with high intensity interval based cardio. MRT can uses compound movements, supersets, circuits, speed, low rest, and it almost always packs a double whammy of aerobic and anaerobic. It breaks down barriers between traditional weight training and cardio. Tired of all that climbing, “ellipsing,” jogging, and riding while still getting nowhere? MRT is for you.

Being a parent is all about being different people on different days. One day it is coach, the next referee. But one person every parent must be everyday is Macgyver. Every day, life throws you another
curve ball requiring you to make up solutions on the fly. This could not be more true as when you or your child has a minor ailment to manage between the busy family schedules. So here are some unconventional solutions to common medical problems using everyday household items. While these are all suggestions we give our patients from time to time, be sure to talk to your doctor or child’s pediatri-cian before trying any of them.
Make a Warm Compress Warm compresses can be great for sore muscles, ear aches and abscesses to name a few. To make a warm compress that will hold warmth for a long time, take a potato and put it in the microwave for 5-10 minutes, depending on the size of the potato, then wrap a towel around the potato and voila, you have a warm compress.
Treat Warts Warts are one of the more frustrating and tenacious problems around. After nuclear war, the only two remaining living things on earth will be cockroaches and warts. But there is a remedy… duct tape. Place a strip of duct tape over the wart and leave it on for one week. Remove the tape, soak the wart then file down the wart with a pumice stone or emery board, then reapply the duct tape. Keep doing this each week until the wart goes away. Many warts will be gone in about 2-4 weeks which is the similar amount of time it take most other wart treatments to work. If you or your child has warts on parts of the body in which duct tape would not be practical, for example on the fingers, another great remedy is clear nail polish. Apply nail polish to the warts each night before bed. Let dry. Do not wash off in the morning. Usually, in a few weeks the warts will start to recede.
Suppress a Cough There are few things that drive parents more crazy then a child who coughs all night long. Honey may be a solution. In one study, children age two and older with colds were given up to 2 teaspoons (10 milliliters) of honey at bedtime. The honey seemed to reduce nighttime coughing and improve sleep. In fact, in the study, honey appeared to be as effective as a common cough suppressant ingredient, dextromethorphan, so it might be worth a try.
Prevent Swimmer’s Ear With summer on its way and swim teams starting up, you can be sure that plenty of kids in Almaden will get swimmer’s ear. A simple way to help prevent swimmer’s ear is with a mixture of one part white vinegar and one part rubbing alcohol. Applying several drops to each ear after a day of swim-ming can help promote drying and prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi that can cause swimmer’s ear.
