Microsoft Office 2013Microsoft Office 2013“ For starters it’s available
wherever you are, on whatever device you’re using at the time, and with full touch-screen support, the entire suite has been reinvented to work with Windows 8-driven tablets, regular keyboard-and-mouse desktop setups, and even smartphones. Along with a completely reinvented interface, all of these things come together to make it the best Office yet.”
— JASON PARKER CNET DOWNLOAD.COM
MICROSOFT OFFICE has long been – and continues to be – the most popular software package worldwide, with millions of people using Office every day to create presentations, build spreadsheets, manage e-mail, write documents, and much more. Sometime around March 1st 2013, Microsoft will release the newest upgrade. Microsoft
Office 2013 is poised to be the biggest software release of 2013, and should drive more computer book sales than any other technology event in 2013.
Despite the general perception in the retail channel of slow sales, Microsoft Office 2010 and its core applications have consistently ranked as the 2nd or 3rd largest computer book category since its release. Office 2013 will build upon the changes introduced in Office 2010, including improving the “ribbon” interface and enhancing the saving and sharing features of the “cloud.” Office 2013 will also sport hugely improved apps that will be completely cross-platform – working on android and apple devices as well as on windows.
The first thing users will see when they open Microsoft Office is a clean, new look. But the features users know and use are still there – along with some new ones that are huge time savers. The new Office also works with smartphones, tablets, and in the cloud, even on PCs that don’t have Office installed. These fea-tures will provide users with more versatility and convenience, while newly up-dated Office suites provide the customized packages businesses and users need. Millions of new users and upgraders will be looking for the resources that show how to quickly and efficiently take advantage of the latest Office 2013 features.
The Pearson Technology Group will offer a complete range of learning aids in a variety of formats for Office users of all levels, from very beginners to long-time power users.
WHAT’S NEW...
#1 NEW FEATURE AND POSSIBLE GAME CHANGER• Office will be available in two different versions: the standard desktop software –
which includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and OneNote – as well as an online subscription service called Office 365.
UPDATED FEATURES INCLUDE:• Save and share files in the cloud – The cloud is like file storage in the sky.
users can get to it anytime they’re online. Now it’s easy to save their Office files to their own SkyDrive or their organization’s site.
• Shared meetings – Join online meetings and share PowerPoint slides, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and OneNote notes. Meeting attendees can see the files, even if they don’t have Office installed.
• More choices for getting started – Instead of seeing a blank file, users can now choose between a recent file or a favorite template.
• Improved Save As and Open – No more browsing and scrolling in dialog boxes. User’s most-used folders are right there from the start. Users can also pin a location so it’s always available.
• Easier file sharing – Now there’s one place in your Office programs, File > Share, that puts together all your options for sharing your files with others.
OFFICE 365Office 365 is an online subscription service that provides email, shared calendars, the ability to create and edit documents online, instant messaging, web conferencing, a public website for a user’s business, and internal team sites – all accessible anywhere from nearly any device.
OFFICE WEB APPSMicrosoft has updated the Office Web Apps that previously shipped with Office 2010. Office Web Apps include updated online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. The web apps feature the same flat look as their desktop counter-parts. Users can use the Office Web Apps to create documents, and can download them locally on to their computer.
The Web Apps are included with Office 365 and allow browser-based, and mobile device-based, access to Office documents. The Web Apps are also included with the traditional Office 2013 product.
OFFICE RTMicrosoft is also releasing a version of Office 2013 for Windows RT. While they will look virtually indistinguishable, Office RT will be slightly different under the hood. Accord-ing to Microsoft, the developers have been able to keep battery and power consump-tion to an absolute minimum which is crucial on Windows RT devices. Optimizations have been made to things such as enabling touch mode by default. Also, Microsoft has been able to maximize battery life by looking and changing some features. An example is the blinking which stops after a few seconds if the user stops using the program. This is replaced by a fixed, non-blinking cursor.

Microsoft PowerPoint 2013 has a brand-new look: it’s cleaner and primed for use on tablets and phones, so users can swipe and tap their way through presentations. Presenter View automatically adapts to a projection set-up, and users can even use it on a single monitor. Themes now come with variations, which make it simpler to hone in on the look users want. And when their working with others, users can add comments to ask questions and get feedback.

Microsoft Office 2013Microsoft Office 2013 COMPETITION
Because Office is one of the most important topics in computer books, many, many computer book series release books on it. For Office 2010, Wiley released 103 titles, Microsoft Press released 46, we released 27, and O’Reilly released 11. We don’t have any inside information from the other publishers yet, but we expect the numbers to be similar with Office 2013. Following are the series we consider to be the most important competitors to our Office books and series.
FOR DUMMIES (WILEY) – This is of course the best branded computer book series. Its approach falls in between Absolute Beginners Guide and In Depth. Dummies doesn’t have the tutorial approach Absolute Beginners Guides offer, and doesn’t approach the depth and breadth of coverage offered by In Depth.
STEP BY STEP (Microsoft Press) – This popular series uses some of the visual techniques used by On Demand, but is more tutorial in nature, like Absolute Beginners Guide or Easy. Being from Microsoft Press, volumes in this series usually tell you only the approved Microsoft way, without giving you a true picture of any of the program’s weaknesses.
INSIDE OUT (Microsoft Press) – This is probably the biggest and most direct competition for In Depth. As with Step By Step, these books series usually tell you only the approved Microsoft way, without giving you a true picture of any of the program’s weaknesses.
MISSING MANUAL (O’Reilly) – This series has always been stronger in Macintosh topics than in Microsoft areas, perhaps because the founder, David Pogue, has stronger ties to that community. Since Pogue sold the rights to the series to O’Reilly, and has been less involved in the day to day management of the series, the quality has suffered as O’Reilly has rushed to bring out as many titles as they can, without care to how well they are written or how well they follow the series guidelines.
BIBLE (Wiley) – Another competitor to In Depth, the Bibles try to appeal to all levels, and include a lot of introductory material that is unnecessary for experienced users, and leaves them less room to get into more advanced topics. The Bibles use a one-color interior, while In Depth has a more attractive two-color design.
MR. SPREADSHEET’S BOOKSHELF (Wiley) – This series is direct competition to MrExcel. One of its strengths is that the series editor is John Walkenbach, who is a well-respect Excel author and trainer. It’s rumored to be Walkenbach’s last round of writing and he is more than likely not doing these books, but his name will still be attached to them as the series editor.
