FOUNDERS AWARD FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Recipient: Lawrence Michael Doane, Legislative Affairs
F. Christopher Arterton, Professor Emeritus of Political Management, was the founding Dean of the Graduate School of Political Management (GSPM), serving 23 years from 1987 to 2010. Dr. Arterton's research, teaching, and consulting on American public opinion made him an expert on the strategic environment of American political leaders. Under his leadership, the GSPM grew from 23 students to over 500 studying in four master’s degree programs and assumed its place as the nation's first and foremost school for professional politics. He remains a trusted advisor to GSPM’s faculty and staff, and a beloved mentor to students and alumni.
Henry D. Paley and Neal Fabricant were the co-founders of the New York State Legislative Institute at Baruch College, which provided the institutional base for establishing the GSPM. Their ideas continue to inform our thinking about politics and education, and their spirit still resonates among those whose lives they enriched.
Named in their honor, the Founders Award for Academic Excellence is given to a graduate of the GSPM who has demonstrated academic achievement and a commitment to advancing the thought leadership in his or her chosen profession.
