While America enjoys a love affair with healthier foods like fish, fish-ing is a challenge … and an obses-sion. Anglers will find some of the most flavorful fish right here in North Central Ohio/Lorain County – walleye, steelhead trout and yel-low perch. Lorain County fishing is part of Lake Erie’s Central Basin, which stretches from Huron, Ohio, to Erie, Pennsylvania. There are two main areas for fishing: Lake Erie and inland waters.
INLAND Public fishing waters are plentiful, and extend from the Oberlin and Wellington reservoirs to Metro Parks in the County, including the Black River north of Elyria and Findley State Park.
LAKE ERIE Fishing on Lake Erie, the fourth largest of the Great Lakes, can be challenging because of extreme weather conditions. So
engaging an expert charter boat service and/or fishing guide can enhance your angling adventure.
WALLEYE Best in May and mid- to late-summer. Large, trophy walleyes migrate from the west to the deeper cooler waters of the Central Basin in Lake Erie.
STEELHEAD TROUT Superb almost year-round. Main streams are the Vermilion River from Birmingham to the Lake. The Black River is also a terrific source.
YELLOW PERCH From spring (March) through fall, perch make for fabulous fishing in Lake Erie. In the spring, find a shoreline pier like the Lorain Lighthouse to fish.
