8 Mid-Willamette Valley Guide
During the mid-1850s pioneers used hand tools and determination to build covered bridges in Oregon. According to the Oregon Covered Bridge Society, by the early 20th century the state provided standard bridge designs, most incorporating the Howe truss. The abundance of Douglas Fir and the shortage of steel during the world wars continued construction of covered spans well into the 1950s. Wooden bridges were covered to keep the truss timbers dry. A covered bridge could last 80 years or more, while an uncovered span would deteriorate in a decade. For more information see www.covered-bridges.org.
GILKEY BRIDGEGilkey Station was established when the railroad arrived in 1880. It served as a shipping point for farm products. Just about every-thing but the Gilkey Bridge which spans Thomas Creek is gone now. In 1998 the bridge was repaired and reopened to traffic.
WEDDLE BRIDGEWeddle is a typical example of Linn County’s open-sided covered bridges. It was bypassed in 1980 by a concrete bridge downstream and neglected. It eventually became a safety issue, and was scheduled to be demolished but local covered bridge enthusiasts with the help of State Senator Mae Yih saved it. It became the bridge to receive Oregon Covered Bridge Program grant. In 1989, the Cascade Forest Resource Center was formed to rebuild the Weddle Bridge across Ames Creek in Sankey Park. The historic bridge is now the site for many events.
CRAWFORDSVILLE BRIDGEBuilt in 1932, the bridge features a narrow slit window on both sides of the structure. Originally the portals were rounded, but were enlarged to allow larger loads. In 1963, the bridge was bypassed and the state relin-quished control to Linn County. In the flood of 1996, the bridge sustained severe damage. An Oregon Covered Bridge Program grant paid for repair.

Covered Bridges
Mid-Willamette Valley Guide 9
SHIMANEK BRIDGELinn County’s newest and longest covered span features red paint, por-tal design and louvered windows, all similar to the former span which was built in 1927. The first bridge here is believed to have been constructed in 1861. The covered bridge was built in 1891. In 1904, the county rebuilt the bridge, but it washed out in 1921.
The replacement lasted until 1927, when high water damaged the piers and it was replaced again. In 1966 the current bridge was completed.
HOFFMAN BRIDGEBuilt primarily with hand tools, the upper timbers show adze marks where workers shaped them by hand. The bridge is painted white and has two Gothic windows on each side.
SHORT BRIDGEThis is the sole survivor of the covered bridges which crossed the South Fork of the Santiam River. It is one of the few remaining in the county to have a wooden shingle roof. When built, the bridge was common-ly known as the Whiskey Butte Bridge. Fishermen on and under the bridge cast lines into the cool waters of the South Santiam.
STAYTON-JORDAN BRIDGEPrior to 1986, the Jordan Bridge spanned Thomas Creek in Linn County several miles east of Scio. When the ounty announced the bridge was to be replaced, Stayton residents asked to take title to the structure. A covered bridge preservation company was formed, enlisting volunteers and Marine Corps reservists for the 6th Engineering Battalion in Salem. The span was rebuilt over the Salem Power Canal to serve as a foot bridge connecting two parks. It was dedicated in June 1988. Dec. 20, 1994 Christmas lights ignited the roof and the bridge was destroyed. Citizens constructed a new bridge, dedicated in September 1998.
HANNAH BRIDGEThomas Creek, named for Fred-erick Thomas who obtained a donation land claim on the banks of the stream in 1846, has five covered bridges in Linn County, with the Hannah being the new-est. It is the characteristic Linn County covered bridge design, which includes segmental arches, exposed beams at the gable ends, and board-and-batten cladding. It was built primarily with hand tools.LARWOOD BRIDGEBuilt to highway commission specifications, the Larwood is a standard 105-foot length, with partially exposed trusses, white-washed interior and rounded portals. The span is located three miles north of Lacomb, next to Larwood Wayside Park, a favorite with fishermen and swimmers.

UP FOR A CHALLENGEThe Cascading Rivers Scenic Bikeway follows highways 46 and 224 up and over the Western Cascades along the Breitenbush and Clackamas rivers. A 70-mile route one way, it features forests, rivers and campsites between Detroit and Estacada. It is meant primarily for expert-level riders with more than 6,000 feet of climb; considered best as a multi-day ride. In September look for the
annual Killer Fang Ride. Some sections offer little-to-no highway shoulder room. The route is closed during late fall and winter due to snow. For details on the Killer Fang go to detroitlakeoregon.org.

DOWN COUNTRY ROADSJourney through Oregon’s history and agricultural bounty on some or all of the 132-mile Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway. It follows the Willamette River from Champoeg State Park, its northern most point, to Armitage County Park in Eugene. For the complete ride Leg 1 is Champoeg Park to Salem, Leg 2 Salem to Albany, Leg 3 Albany to Brownsville, and Leg 4 Brownsville to Armitage Park. The map to the left features Legs 2 and 3. The valley’s temperate climate encourages year-round biking, but bring rain gear for winter riding. The entire route is marked with Scenic Bikeway signs. A a recommended short ride is Albany to Shedd. It is a very flat and scenic 42-mile round trip. For details go to rideoregonride.com.

HISTORIC BROWNSVILLEBrownsville, one of Oregon’s early settlements, had its beginnings in 1846, when a group of families came west on the Oregon Trail and claimed land in the lush valley of the Calapooia River. Soon there was a ferry, a store and by 1858, the communities of North Brownsville and Amelia. A dam was built to supply water power for industry which eventually included a grist mill, woolen mill, sawmill, furniture factory and tannery. The railroad came to town in 1880. By 1884 North Brownsville was a bustling manufacturing and trade center
serving a population of 300. In 1895, the north and south sides of the river consolidated as the City of Brownsville. The city celebrates its history. It is home to the Linn County Historical Museum, Historic Moyer House Museum, Pioneer Picture Gallery, Living Rock Studios, Carriage Me Back Historical Drama weekend, annual Pioneer Picnic and August’s Antique Faire. It was also the location for the film Stand By Me, and July 23 is celebrated as Stand By Me Day. Brownsville Chamber of Commerce has more information: historicbrownsville.com or 541-928-0831.

FOSTER RESERVOIRThis scenic 1,200-acre reservoir on the South Santiam River is located just 30 minutes from I-5. There is good bank access at several rest stops and campgrounds, and three seasonal boat ramps. The reservoir features trout, bass, perch and catfish. Boat angling is best April 1 to mid June. Bank angling is popular near the dam at the Army Corps of Engineers park and at flat areas along the south side of the reservoir. The lake at Sunnyside Park is great for young anglers. linnparks.com
GREEN PETER RESERVOIRNestled deep within the forested setting of Green Peter Reservoir is Whitcomb Creek County Park. This 328-acre rustic park provides spectac-ular mountain views, bird-watching, sailing, fishing, hiking, camping and water skiing. Jet skis, speed boats and fishing boats welcome. It is a premier kokanee fishery and also supports stocked rainbow trout and small-mouth bass. linnparks.com

The Quartzville Back Country Byway runs through the forests around Green Peter Reservoir and along the Quartzville Creek National Wild and Scenic River. It features outstanding scenic driving, white water boating, recreational mining old-growth and maturing forests, rock outcrop-pings, spring and summer wildflowers, and vivid fall colors. There are trails to climb the ridges of old Cascade Mountains or walk into the Middle Santiam Wilderness. Four varieties of huckleberries -- red, bigleaf, oval leaf, and Alaska -- pull late summer visitors to the Quartzville area. The byway is approximately 50 miles long connecting U.S. Hwy 20, one mile east of Sweet Home and Hwy 22, 19 miles east of Detroit.

Jeremiah Driggs established the first legal mining claim in the Quartzville area on Sept. 5, 1863. Quartzville was named after the quartz rock formations found with the gold in the mines. Within four years, more than 500 mining claims were established and over 1,000 people lived in Quartzville. By 1870, large scale mining in the area was deemed unprofitable and the town was abandoned. The Quartzville Recreational Mining Corridor still offers opportunities to pan for gold, much like the old-timers did.
