2017-18 annual reportFOR THE EMBASSY THEATRE
FOUNDATION, INC.
Celebrating 90 years of the Emboyd-Embassy Theatre
was THE highlight of the 2017-18 year! We honored
our heritage by producing a concert that mirrored a
1920s-style show by featuring the Grande Page pipe
organ, vaudeville, dancers, singing and silent film. At that
concert, we debuted our restored Brenograph, a type of
slideshow machine, and premiered three new CDs: one
a remastering of works by the late Buddy Nolan and the
other two by wonderful young, award-winning organists Richard Hills and Mark
Herman. In addition, we opened a Heritage Center to display Embassy history.
Throughout the entire anniversary year we presented blockbuster films
representing each decade of the Embassy’s existence. This series was so popular
with patrons that we are programming additional films – sports and noir flicks in
addition to a silent film series – in 2018-19. In addition, this return to our heritage
allows us to feature the Grande Page for new audiences, as it is played at nearly
all the film screenings by volunteer house organist Cletus Goens.
Opening the ballroom and other new spaces in March 2016 was a physical
display of our organizational growth and change. With all areas of our historic
gem now in operation, we have grown in other ways, too, from number and
types of events to size of staff and budgets. In 2017-18, the board set a new
strategic plan that will help us shape our artistic programming direction for the
future. And we will need your help: We’ll be reaching out to you and many others
in our community to listen to what you love best about the Embassy and what
new experiences you want to have here. We are excited about new programming
partnerships with the Philharmonic, Honeywell Center and a few too new to
be announced yet! And of course we will continue to set the bar for excellent
patron experiences because, at the Embassy, every event makes a memory.
Thanks to you, 2017-18 was a record year for the history books, and we look
forward to making new memories with you in the years to come.

EMBASSY-ORIGINATED PROGRAMMING
This affordable array of local programming is created to allow the widest possible spectrum of patrons to experience the grandeur of the state’s largest self-sustained historic theater. Here are details of the four programming areas.
EMBASSY-BRANDED EVENTSYear after year, established programs like Festival of Trees and Down the Line continue to draw visitors to the Embassy from throughout the region. Completing its third season in 2018 with a record number of 2,839 attendees, the Summer Nights at the Embassy series showcases the building’s newest spaces, offering patrons a weeknight opportunity to enjoy live local entertainment while relaxing on the Parkview Health Rooftop Patio with a tremendous view of the growing Fort Wayne cityscape. Performers of all ages from the Fort Wayne arts community came together in May 2018 for a special 90th anniversary celebration concert honoring the Embassy’s beginnings as a vaudeville theater house.
EMBASSY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMINGAn important part of Embassy Originated Programming, Embassy educational programming has grown from a single presentation in 2006-07 to four programs that served more than 16,000 young people in the 2017-18 fiscal year.
EMBASSY FILMS, FEATURING THE GRANDE PAGE ORGANA film series marking the Embassy’s 90th anniversary drew 2,620 fans to movies selected from the nine decades of the theater’s existence. Film screenings featured pre-show and intermission performances on the Grande Page organ, the instrument that inspired the saving of the Embassy in the 1970s.
EMBASSY EXPERIENCESProviding unique opportunities for more than 1,000 ticket buyers, donors and volunteers, these offerings provide new experiences while expanding opportunities for patron and donor engagement. Supporter-focused events, like the annual Volunteer Appreciation reception and member pre-show events encourage and thank loyal supporters.

2018 proved to be a busy anniversary year, especially on the Embassy stage.
Withstanding time—the Embassy paid homage to its past with a community
celebration event similar to the 1928 opening night and presented a film series
from the past decades. Showcasing talent—the Embassy stage welcomed
favorites Straight No Chaser, Earth Wind & Fire, Steve Martin & Martin Short
and shined the spotlight on new dreams with two sold-out Addison Agen
performances. Displaying treasure—the Embassy unveiled the Heritage Center
displaying an assortment of items from its historical archives including a
brenograph machine and Buddy Nolan memorabilia. Financially, the year ended
August 31, 2018, with total revenue of $3,250,311 and marked the 13th consecutive
year in the black. The Embassy retains strong cash reserves as well as an
additional $1,113,711 in investments; this is up 14 percent from the previous year.
Most revenue sources increased from the prior year with only rentals being
slightly down. The anniversary celebration events along with traditional favorites
such as Festival of Trees and Summer Nights contributed to increased box
office, ticketing and service revenues of 28 percent. Attendance was also up
as restoration/facility fees rose 23 percent over the prior year. Love for the
Embassy also extends beyond the stage as more patrons are engaged in its
programming and its mission as membership revenues grew 33 percent from 2017.
The Embassy continues to maintain a diversified portfolio for investment
accounts. During the fiscal year, a net realized gain on investments of $12,159
and a net unrealized gain on investments of $39,272 were recorded. The
Embassy also earned interest and dividend income of $47,160 this year. In
addition to the Heritage Center, the Embassy completed several building
projects including new radio equipment for staffing events, new mezzanine
lounge furniture and dressing room furniture and three new high-efficiency
boilers (replacing six!) in the theater.
With continued strong leadership, generous patrons and a memorable past, the
Embassy will shine and make memories for another 90 years.

RUFFOLO GRAND STAIRCASE NAMINGThe late Linda and Joe Ruffolo’s
community legacy was commemorated in
August 2018 with the newly named Linda
and Joseph Ruffolo Grand Staircase.
The centerpiece of the Embassy Theatre’s
lobby, the Linda and Joseph Ruffolo Grand
Staircase will welcome generations of
families to the historic theater. The couple’s
children—Joe Ruffolo Jr. and Julie Ruffolo
Gilpin—said the family chose to name the
staircase because of their experiences in
attending theater events with their parents.
The staircase was a favorite feature for the
family. A plaque at the base of the staircase
recognizes the Ruffolos’ contributions to
the Fort Wayne community.
“We are honored by this generous gift,”
said Kelly Updike, president and CEO
of the Embassy Theatre. “Linda and Joe
were tireless community volunteers. Fort
Wayne is a better place because of their
commitment to our community. The Linda
and Joseph Ruffolo Grand Staircase will
welcome thousands of families year-round.”
Linda and Joe advocated for the Fort Wayne community with their professional
and volunteer service to area arts and community organizations, including the
Embassy Theatre, Arts United, Fort Wayne Youtheatre and the Fort Wayne
Philharmonic. Linda retired from IPFW as executive director of development in
2014. Her extensive volunteer work ranged from Fort Wayne Youtheatre to Fort
Wayne Bicentennial. She passed away in 2015. Joe, who passed away in 2011,
was CEO of NorthAmerican from 1987-93 and a co-founder of Tower Bank. He
served on many for- and non-profit boards.

MARQUEE SOCIETY: LEAVE YOUR LEGACY WITH THE EMBASSY
The Embassy established the Marquee Society to recognize and remember those individuals who chose to continue their investment and support
of the Embassy Theatre after their death. The members of the Marquee Society recognize that investing in the Embassy through an estate gift will
help preserve this community treasure for future generations.
A planned gift to the Embassy, whether in the form of a bequest, trust or appreciated assets, will ensure the funds are available for ongoing restoration and programing needs. Most importantly, a planned gift
ensures your money does what you want it to do.

EMBASSY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMINGSEPTEMBER 2017 TO AUGUST 2018
The Embassy Theatre has played a part in the lives of area schoolchildren through the years. Educational programming at the Embassy has grown from a single presentation in 2006-07 to four programs serving more than 16,000 young people in the 2017-2018 fiscal year. The educational programming at the Embassy Theatre includes:
Learn It Live, a free show for area schoolchildrenAt least once a year, the Embassy offers free, live performances for students. These shows are some of the best in the country. Talent has included Catapult Dance and Lightwire Theater. Black Violin, returning in 2019, also hosted a master class for 30 area string students who took the stage to play during the group’s encore.
SCORE! A devised theater workshop for middle school studentsThis program allows middle-school students to explore creative expression. Through this three-week summer intensive experience, students devise, create and produce a piece of original musical theatre based on their perceptions and then perform it on the magnificent Embassy stage. Space is limited to 25 students in grade 6, 7 or 8.
Study TripsThe Embassy offers three Study Trips that connect students with real-life effects of historic preservation on a community arts treasure. During the 2017-18 fiscal year, more than 2,000 students were served by this program targeting grades 1-5.
• Commitment to Community Taking a bow on the Embassy stage, students act out history and learn how a community chose to save the historic theater from the wrecking ball. Students use analysis and application of information as they investigate the building for 2-2.5 hours. Aligned to grade 3 standards, and appropriate for grades 2 through 6.
• Entertainment Then and Now Following the path of a patron, participants use primary sources to compare attending a performance at the Embassy Theatre in 1928 to today. 90 minutes. Appropriate for grades K-5. Great for Scout troops, clubs and other groups.
• Shapes, Sights, Sounds and Surfaces Explore the Embassy through the senses. Appropriate for ages 3 to 5. This experience invites preschoolers to explore the Embassy Theatre with their senses. Instead of telling preschoolers “don’t touch” they can explore the beauty of the theater with their five senses.

VOLUNTEER AWARDS
Bill Zabel passed away on November 30, 2018. Bill will be fondly remembered by all of those he interacted with at the Embassy Theatre. When the theater was on the brink of destruction in the early 1970s, Bill was among those who helped save the building and establish the Embassy Theatre Foundation to help preserve the building for future generations to treasure.
Bill’s passion truly was the Embassy’s Grande Page pipe organ, which fascinated him due to the many components and engineering behind the instrument. Bill’s humor, wit, dedication and kindness will be missed.

2018 Marquee HIGHLIGHTS
2018 MARQUEE WITH MANDY GONZALEZThe 2018 Marquee was presented by
Mark Ulmschneider and Georgia Wralstad
Ulmschneider and featured an incredible taste
of Fort Wayne’s finest with a four-course dinner
provided by Baker Street, Casa Ristoranti Italiano,
Club Soda, and The Hoppy Gnome.
Following dinner,
guests followed
a behind-the-
scenes path to the
historic Embassy
stage, where
they were treated
to an intimate
performance by Broadway
star Mandy Gonzalez, with the
ornate theater auditorium as
the picturesque backdrop to the
concert.

2019 MARQUEE WITH LEA SALONGASAVE THE DATE – MAY 3, 2019
The Marquee event combines the Embassy’s newest spaces with the
historic stage where so many legends have performed. The evening
begins in the Indiana Hotel Lobby and transitions to the beautiful
Yergens Rogers Foundation Ballroom located on the 6th and 7th floors,
where guests will be served a four-course meal featuring some of Fort
Wayne’s finest restaurants. While in the ballroom, guests will have access
to the Parkview Health Rooftop Patio with its spectacular view of Fort
Wayne’s evolving skyline.
At the conclusion of dinner, guests will advance to the theater for a
unique onstage seating experience. Exclusive access to the Sweetwater
Dressing Rooms and entire backstage area, will provide a peek behind
the curtain of the historic stage. A performance by Tony Award winner
Lea Salonga will be the highlight of the evening. Lea’s accomplished
career includes leading roles in Les Misérables, Miss Saigon and
Cinderella on Broadway, while she has also been the singing voice of
two Disney animated film princesses in Aladdin and Mulan. Desserts and
coffee will be served at intermission.
The Marquee provides funding for the preservation and restoration of
the historic theater, which celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2018. The
Embassy’s mission is to serve northeast Indiana by presenting elite
performances and providing artistic and cultural enrichment through
the performing arts while preserving the state’s largest self-sustaining
historic theater.
