2018-2019DISTRICTCALENDAR
EVERY CHILD... College, Career and Community
READY
OUR VISION Every child... College, Career and Community Ready.
This year we convened a panel of industry leaders, students, teachers and community members and asked them to help us envision what the future holds for our students. This inquiry formed the basis for the next iteration of our Graduate Profile and vision statement: Every Child... College, Career and Community Ready.
More importantly, this work set the tone for how our District will innovate in the area of student agency by measuring holistic competencies of learning that help tell a broader story about the wonderful students that we serve. Therefore, it is important to stay the course as a District. We will continue to support agency through our formative assessment work and through building better systems for collaboration. Although our roadmap for improvement is a complex one, it is my goal this year to bring greater clarity to our theory for change so that all educators in our ecosystem better understand how to move the needle for student learning. Thank you for entrusting your child’s educational development to us.

The beginning of school is all about getting a fresh start! Help your student become successful by making sure they have a planner or other type of organizer, and get in the habit of using it on a daily basis. Younger children love to be included in tasks, so involve your child when getting ready for the week by giving them a checklist: Backpack, clothes, lunch...This builds lifelong habits and makes mornings and getting out of the house less stressful.

Does your child show an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM)? You play an important part in cultivating their interest, so go ahead and encourage your child to take more challenging courses. Books for young readers like “Ada Twist, Scientist” and other titles help students see themselves represented in STEM. Need another reason to love STEM? Sunnyside High School’s recognized Biotechnology Program, is a first step to explore this field with an abundance of high-paying jobs in Southern Arizona.

The road to college starts with family, which is why every year the University of Arizona’s College Academy for Parents supports elementary school parents in the Sunnyside District so they can help their children become ‘college ready’. Throughout the 12-week program, families participate in workshops, learning activities and campus visits. Celebrating its 16th anniversary, the program has supported over 800 families and 2,500 students in grades K-6.

Sunnyside schools have a long tradition of honoring our community’s heritage through excellence in Folklorico and Mariachi. Folklorico programs like those at Los Amigos Tech Academy and Craycroft Elementary give students a strong foundation for middle and high school. Our District hosts an annual Mariachi summer camp and the Noche de las Estrellas showcase, held last year at Casino del Sol’s Ava Amphitheater.

Community Ready begins with small acts of kindness. Last winter Sunnyside students were seen volunteering in community organizations, hosting food drives, and performing musical holiday renditions. Sunnyside High School Student Council took part in the Angel Charity Ball, while musical acts like Elvira Elementary’s Handbell Choir delighted District audiences while Gallego Intermediate’s Mariachi performed for our law enforcement partner, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

The month of February is a good time for families to reconnect with what’s happening in the classroom. With Parent/Teacher Conferences taking place this month, this is a great opportunity to ask questions about how your child is developing academically and what you can do to support that process. Reflect on what you’ve observed and brainstorm a list of questions to bring with you to Parent/Teacher Conferences. Save the date: February 6-8.

Graduation is the ultimate expression of our vision: ‘Every Child… College, Career, and Community Ready.’ For students, it represents the culmination of years of curiosity, learning and perseverance. It is also a moment of pride for families and the hundreds of individuals who work inside and outside of the classroom, to help develop and shape the lives of our students as they go out into the world: To continue their education, launch new adventures, or serve their communities.

Summer is a time when students take a break from the classroom to enjoy the weather, reconnect with family, and even travel. But this doesn’t mean that learning has to stop. Find ways to engage with your child this summer by reading a book together, or teaching them about the science behind cooking together. Exploring the outdoors or learning a new language are also fun ways to pass the time. Be mindful of ‘screen time’ and you’ll see that your child will become engaged in other ways. The results will pay off once August comes!

The month of July signals the coming of ‘Opening Day’, which has become a tradition in the Sunnyside District. Held at the end of July, it is the one day of the year when everyone in the organization shows up to cheer for their school or department. Hosted at Sunnyside and Desert View High School, the event is an exciting gathering that sets the stage for our Superintendent to lay out the vision for the year ahead.
