DISTRICT 7 ATTENDANCE POLICYPHILOSOPHYDistrict 7’s educational program is built on the premise that regular attendance is vital to a student’s success in school. Regular school attendance is the responsibility of the parent. The student who is frequently absent misses class instruction, discussion and social interaction, even though written work is made up.
DEFINITIONSValid cause for absence - A child may be absent from school because of illness, observance of a religious holiday, death in the immediate family, family emergency, situations beyond the student’s control as determined by the Board or such other circumstances which cause reasonable concern to the parent for the safety or health of the student.
Unexcused Absence - The following points will be considered when determining an unexcused absence:• Parents will be allowed to report their child absent from school
for a valid cause for up to ten (10) days during the school year without verification from a doctor.
• For any day a student is absent beyond the ten (10) days reported by a parent, there must be written verification from a doctor in order for it to be considered excused by the school.
• Without this doctor’s verification, the absence will be unexcused and the student will be considered truant.
• Any student who is truant is subject to the receipt of a “ticket” written in accordance with the local truancy ordinance.
Truant - A “truant” is a child subject to compulsory school attendance and who is absent without valid cause from such attendance for a school day or a portion thereof.
Chronic or Habitual Truant - A “chronic or habitual truant” is a child who is subject to compulsory school attendance and who is absent without valid cause from such attendance for ten (10) percent or more of the previous one hundred eighty (180) regular attendance days.
CHARACTER COUNTS IN WOOD DALE The Wood Dale community has taken part in a national organization called Character Counts, which is dedicated to strengthening the moral fiber of today’s youth. It does not take a miracle - just an effort on our entire community to work together to help our children develop into caring, honest adults. In personal relationships, in school, at the workplace - in life - who you are makes a differ ence. Character Counts consists of six core ethical values, which form the foundation.
The “Six Pillars of Character” are: Trustworthiness
Respect Responsibility
Fairness Caring
Citizenship

Riding a School Bus is a privilege granted by District 7. With this privilege is the responsibility of proper behavior to help ensure a safe ride for all students. While in transit, the school bus driver has complete authority over all bus riders. Students should:
• Remember that bus drivers have authority to assign seats.• Immediately follow all instructions given by the driver.• Carry bus passes every day. The students should have authorization
from the transportation coordinator for changes in routes and/or exception.
• Arrive at the bus stop 5 minutes prior to the scheduled pick-up time.• Be careful in approaching the place where the bus stops. Do not move
toward the bus until the bus has been brought to a complete stop and bus doors open.
• Remain in the seat at all times.• Face the front of the bus at all times.• Sit with no more than two additional riders (maximum three to a seat).• Never pass or throw objects in the bus or from the window.• Keep hands and head inside the bus at all times after entering and until
leaving the bus.• Refrain from loud laughing, talking or unnecessary confusion that will
distract the driver. • Be absolutely quiet when approaching a railroad crossing stop, so that
the driver can hear if a train is coming. (Lights and gates may not be working.)
• Treat bus equipment as you would valuable furniture in your own home.• Never tamper with the bus or any of its equipment.• Not eat or drink or chew gum on the bus.• Not bring any animals on the bus.• Keep books, packages, coats and all other objects out of the aisles.• Take all books, lunches or other articles when leaving the bus.• Be courteous to the bus driver and to fellow riders.• Not ask the driver to stop at places other than the regular bus stop.
All bus riders are to get on and off at their regular stop only. The bus driver is not permitted other stops except by proper authorization from a school official.
• Observe safety precautions at the discharge point. Where it is necessary to cross the highway, proceed to a point at least 10 feet in front of the bus on the right shoulder of the highway, where traffic may be observed in both directions. Then wait for a signal from the bus driver permitting you to cross.
• Remain in the bus in the event of a road emergency until emergency instructions are given by the driver.
• Conduct themselves in a manner acceptable in the classroom or the family auto.
Parents of bus riders should stress these rules. In cases of infraction of the rules, the following steps will be taken: Suspension from riding the bus may come at any time, depending on the infraction that has taken place.
Bus riders who have damaged the bus will be responsible for payment or replacement of damage, and may be suspended from riding the bus.
Parents of Kindergarten riders should ensure that their child knows the street corners of his/her bus stop and how to get home from there if a parent is not able to be there to pick up the child.
Bus passes should be easily visible to the driver. (Pinned on back pack is the best method.)
