Adult Roles Courses /Financial Literacy Introduction to The Stock Market Game (SMG) Wednesday, 10:45 - 11:45 Free to Utah Educators and 4-12th grade students, the Stock Market Game builds an understanding of investing and provides real world skills practice. Through a virtual $100,000 portfolio, 2-5 students form teams and invest real-time in the Stock Market for 10 weeks. Find out how to use it in your classroom. Teachers please bring iPad or smart phone (helpful but not required)

Karen McMullin: Karen McMullin, a Weber State graduate & former school teacher, is the Investor Education Coordinator for Utah. She has been instrumental in the increase of Investor Education events offered by the Utah Division of Securities.

Liz Blaylock: For the past 10 years, Liz Blaylock, a U of U graduate with a degree in Political Science & minor in Economics, has conducted comprehensive investigations into various aspects of Consumer Fraud, specializing in Securities/Investment fraud.

Marriage Prep Course – The FACS Educator Connection Thursday, 8:00 - 9:00; Thursday, 9:10 - 10:10 Come learn about the bill that was passed in the 2018 legislative session regarding the marriage prep course and how you as Family and Consumer Sciences teachers have a part. Alan Hawkins: Alan Hawkins is a Professor and the new dean of the School of Family Life at Brigham Young University.

We'll review the Tier 1 and Tier 2 retirement systems, as well as the URS 401k, 457 and Roth IRA accounts. We'll also explain how to invest your money in the various retirement accounts available to all URS members.

As a Retirement Planning Advisor for URS, his passions align as he is able to help individuals and families understand their retirement benefits. Dawn Dachenhausen: Dawn graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance and is currently working on a Master’s Degree in Finance at the University of Utah.

Tech Out Adult Roles and Financial Literacy Wednesday, 12:40 -1:40; Wednesday, 1:50- 2:50 Sick of your usual lessons? Want to find different, fun ideas to beef up what you teach? Come listen to different ideas that teachers have used to make Adult Roles and Financial Literacy a more fun and hands-on classes. Teaching Consumers How to Effectively Use Online Coupon Codes and Mobile Coupons to Save Money Thursday, 10:30-11:30 Couponing is at an all-time high in the United States. 41% of consumers are using more coupons than years past. Unfortunately, popular television shows like “Extreme couponing” have given an unrealistic perspective on how much money can be saved using coupons. New couponers can actually cost themselves additional expense by making common mistakes such as buying products they do not need or will not use. There is a timely need to educate consumers properly on coupon use – particularly digital coupons, apps, and coupon codes. This class will cover tips for making the most of the digital coupon craze.

Darlene Christensen: Darlene Christensen is the Family and Consumer Sciences and 4H Extension Agent in Tooele County. She has a master’s degree in clothing and textiles.

Youth Suicide Prevention: Best Practices from The Field Thursday, 12:30 - 1:30; Thursday, 1:40 - 2:40 Current research supports that a safe and positive school climate fostering communication, relationships and a sense of belonging improves academic performance, reduces risk factors and minimizes problem behaviors. This session will give insight regarding best practices from the field of youth suicide prevention.

Cathy Davis: Cathy Davis taught ecology, biology, and health sciences (anatomy and physiology) for over eighteen years; for seven of those years Cathy taught school success to at-risk students. She is a small business owner and a graduate of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program. Cathy has training in eating disorders, grief counseling, trauma-informed care and is certified with the American Association for Suicidology as a school suicide prevention specialist. She is a trainer for Youth Mental Health First Aid, Safe Talk, QPR and PREPaRE. She is the current Suicide Prevention Specialist at the Utah State Board of Education.

Using the PICK a Partner Program to Provide Healthy Relationship Education for Young Adults Thursday, 1:40 - 2:40 The PICK (Premarital Interpersonal Choices and Knowledge) a Partner program uses research-based concepts that empower young adults with the knowledge and skills to develop and maintain healthy, satisfying relationships. Program participants will be given an overview of the program, as well as information to implement the program into their classrooms.

Shannon Cromwell: Shannon Cromwell is an Extension Assistant Professor at Utah State University. Her main program areas are Family Relationships, Healthy Lifestyles, and 4-H Youth Development.

Keep their attention and enthusiasm by making your curriculum All Fun and Games. Come learn how to incorporate 40+ fun games into your daily lesson plans. Some games apply only to the Foods curriculum; including ideas on how to make ServSafe more fun, most games can be used in any classroom! Mandi Jensen: Mandi just finished her 7th year at South Jordan Middle School. Courses she has taught include Foods 1, FACS Exploration and Child Development. For the past 4 years she has been the Ambassador/ Hope Squad Advisor. Her passions include teaching, spending time with her husband and two young boys and adventuring outdoors.

Herbal Oils and Vinegars Thursday, 12:30 - 2:40 Herbal oils and vinegars are a creative way to use culinary herbs and skills. Learning how to make them yourself is fun and satisfying, and you will enjoy lots of recipes to use them with. Enjoy learning how to make a few oils and vinegars and then use we will use them in simple recipes. Tasting will be delightful.

Darlene Christensen: Darlene Christensen is the Family and Consumer Sciences and 4H Extension Agent in Tooele County. She has a master’s degree in clothing and textiles. Carolyn Washburn: Carolyn is a semi-retired USU Professor in Washington County. She loves the FACS teaching areas of focus and values the profession. Carolyn enjoys her grandchildren, a little travel and presenting with Darlene

How to Make Foods Class Fun and Memorable Thursday, 9:10 - 10:10; Thursday, 10:30-11:30 The Foods Class should be the most engaging and vital class of the day for students. This class presents several methods for teaching the Strands that help students remember the content and excel on the State Test. There are several activities described that incorporate several learning styles, such as art, music, games and literature. Special attention is given to the STEM aspect of Foods and Nutrition, using science experiments in leavening and fat burning.

Linda Woodfield: Under Mrs. Woodfield, the Foods program at Mapleton Jr. High has grown from two small 9th grade classes to six classes of 9th grade students of 32 students each. There is a waiting list on the 8th grade level of at least 60 students. This is accredited to the fun and engaging activities presented in the class. The students learn best when they enjoy the class. Mrs. Woodfield teaches at Mapleton Jr. High. The passing rate for the State Test averages around 80%. I would love to share some of my successful ideas.

Ideas and schedules for using The Foundation of Restaurant Management and Culinary Arts curriculum (ProStart) as part of the resources for teaching Culinary Arts and Culinary Management. No need to choose just one or the other, there are more opportunities for our students if we integrate. Shauna Young: Shauna has been teaching at Jordan High for a long time. She enjoys helping students prepare for their future.

King Arthur Flour Bake for Good: Kids Learn Bake Share Program Thursday, 8:00 - 9:00 Conference Presentation would be the In-School presentation of King Arthur Flour Bake for Good: Kids Program. Students learn the process of making yeast bread from scratch including the math and science of how all this works. Our program is offered FREE to schools in two forms: In-School Presentation and Self-Directed Program. Students are provided with free baking ingredients from King Arthur Flour. Our recipe makes enough dough for two loaves--one to keep and one to share with someone in need. I want to make teachers aware of this resource for their classrooms.

Pam Jensen: I am an Instructor for King Arthur Flour Bake for Good: Kids Program. I have presented this assembly for 8 years in more than 300 schools from coast to coast in many states. I love seeing students excited about baking and having their own baking ingredients.

Prep and Set Up for a ProStart Competition Wednesday, 10:45 - 11:45 Teaching how to prepare and set up for a ProStart competition 1-hour class, we will set up a work station for the competition. Candace Wilson: Teaches foods and ProStart courses at Westlake High School. She has taught for 16 years, has attended 5 national ProStart competitions with her students and 9 FCCLA. She has learned a lot preparing for the competitions and helping the students be successful. She is passionate about the food industry and enjoys working on leadership projects with her students.

ProStart Thursday, 8:00 - 10:00 ProStart is a School to Career program designed to offer the students and teachers industry-based curriculum and certifications so that a student has the skills needed to enter the workforce during and after high school. We will provide a demonstration of the skills that are included in the ProStart program. Meet a Chef, meet an Owner, meet a Manager who will provide you with training and information about the ProStart program.

Melva Sine: Melva Sine, President/CEO Utah Restaurant Association. Melva has served on several committee's at both the state and national level involved in preparing programs to help students acquire skills to help them enter the workforce. ProStart has been helping students to "feed dreams and build futures" in the restaurant industry throughout the state of Utah. One of the most important aspects of ProStart is working with the amazing teachers which Melva has been doing now for well over 20 years. The teachers are the heart and soul of successful students and working with teachers throughout the state has been a major benefit for the restaurant industry.

Chef Peter Hodgson, Chef Russell Barker, Fred Boutwell, Catherine Burns, Michael McHenry: ProStart presenters are Chefs, Managers, and Owners who have made their careers in the restaurant industry. Every presenter has been in the industry for years developing menu's, recipes, and sharing their love of food with all who enter their establishments.

Round Table ProStart Competition Tips Thursday, 12:30 - 1:30 Come share ideas on the Culinary and Management Competitions. Help your teams enjoy the experience.

Diane Cluff: Have taught ProStart for 16 years and attended Nationals 11 years for either Culinary or Management. I love working with the students and helping them find their potential and share it with others.

Sustainability Practices: Utah’s Own Edibles Wednesday, 1:50-2:50 and 3:00-4:00 Thursday, 12:30 - 1:30; Thursday, 1:40 - 2:40 Sustainable practices are an important component in today's kitchen. Participants will have the opportunity to develop a greater understanding of the farm to table movement and how to implement these strategies in your classroom. Franco Aloia is a Utah native. After attending California Culinary Academy, he worked at numerous locations in California, Nevada and Utah. Currently an Assistant Professor at SLCC, Chef works with his students to prepare them for careers in industry. .Chef Franco Aloia will provide his knowledge and best practices for the local environment.

Teaching Knife Skills and Cooking Methods for a Foods 2 Thursday, 10:30-11:30 Teaching Knife Skills and Cooking methods for a Food and Nutrition 2 class taught as a demo for one hour. We will have recipes, samples, and ideas for some simple food preservation activities you might do in your classroom.

She is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and is currently the Nutrition Education Assistant Training Coordinator with Utah Food $ense, SNAP-Ed.

Fashion/Apparel/Textiles Art of Fashion Illustration NEWLY ADDED Wednesday, 3:00-4:00 pm Educators will learn how to sketch the fashion industry 9-head “Croqui” fashion figure. Lydia will show the step by step process of drawing the figure, breaking it down into basic shapes & lines anyone can draw. This is also a presentation offered in the classroom for students. Lydia Nelson: Lydia is a FIDM alumni, who graduated with an AA in Interior Design and BS in Business Management. She has been successful in these industries and operates her own interior design company, as well as a college representative for FIDM. Her background has provided her opportunities in residential, commercial, retail and hospitality design, including being the designer for Robert Redford’s Sundance Mountain Resort. She enjoys being creative and being able to utilize nature, her education and work experience in her everyday life.

Fashion Design Studio Ideas Thursday, 10:30-11:30; Thursday, 12:30 - 1:30 Creative and hands on ways to present the Fashion Design Studio Strands and Standards. I will share portfolio ideas, games and Elements and Principles ideas that solidify concepts and encourage high levels of learning in a creative and project-based approach.

Kelli Bringhurst: Kelli Bringhurst teaches in the Washington County School district and is passionate about teaching FACS. Fashion Design Studio is one of her favorite classes to teach. Kelli taught this class at the Middle and High School levels and is excited to share her project-based approach and ideas.

Fashion Strategies in 5 Minutes or Less Wednesday, 1:50- 2:50, Wednesday, 3:00-4:00 NEWLY ADDED How do you introduce fashion to your students? How can you gain their attention for the topic of the day? Come learn teaching strategies to introduce fashion topics in 5 minutes or less for the day. Topics include designers, elements of apparel, sketching, polling, quick research, market capture, etc.

Jennifer Nielson: Instructor at USU for the Outdoor Product Design and Development program as well as Family and Consumer Sciences. Specializing in apparel construction and patternmaking.

Fat Quarter Drawstring Backpack Wednesday, 10:45 - 11:45 Class Full; Wednesday, 12:40 -1:40 Use two fat quarters to create an easy drawstring backpack. Supplies teachers need to bring for this class: Bring 2 Fat Quarters and scissors.

Bryant Baird: Teacher in SLC School District for 25 years. Teaches FACS at Glendale Middle School.

Introduction to Sewing with Knits Thursday, 8:00 - 10:00 Come and learn sewing tips and ideas for sewing with Knits. It's the future! We'll practice on different types of knit samples to learn how to do neck bands, seams, and hems. I will have several types of stabilizers to experiment with. I will also show you some of the newest knit fabrics that are popular, such as scuba, ITY, and ponte.

Dawna Baugh, I have been teaching a variety of clothing classes at BYU for the past 27 years. Before that I worked in the apparel industry. I graduated from BYU and USU in Clothing and Textiles. I am passionate about what I do and I love sharing my knowledge and experiences with the FACS teachers here in Utah.

Make & Take Mini Silk Batik Scarf Wednesday, 10:45-11:45 D118 Class Full Come learn how to teach Silk Batik Scarf Production to your students. You will learn the process and create your own "mini" scarf to take back to your classroom with you. Instructions, supplies and curriculum integration ideas will be provided. This is the perfect project to tie State Strands with Industry Standards & Production.

Tierra Davis has taught Family & Consumer Sciences at Desert Hills High School for the past 4 years. Her passion for Fashion Design has been a motivator for her travels and has taken her to Italy, France, England, Brazil & New York in the past 2 years.

Marilyn Simister: Marilyn has a bachelor’s degree in business from BYU. She formed a love of plants as a child and through the USU master gardener program. Marilyn is married and has six children and 15 grandchildren.

Panel Discussion with Professionals - Industry Trends and Current Topics in Interior Design Thursday, 9:10 - 10:10 Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn from professionals in the Interior Design industry. There will be a variety of professionals who work in the industry and are on the cutting edge of knowledge in the design field. These professionals are not just familiar with and passionate about home design, but restaurant and business design as well.

Tricia Broadbent: Tricia Broadbent, who is the facilitator of this class, is currently teaching Interior Design classes at Lone Peak High School. She will start her 5th year this fall. Prior to teaching at the high school level, she taught at South Jordan Middle School years ago. She then enjoyed being a stay at home mom for 15 years. Tricia loves teaching high school students and has her dream job. One of the highlights is the District House project she has done with her Interior Design 3 (Advanced class) for the last couple years. As Garrick Peterson quoted at the Solution Tree conference in September 2017, "The district house project is one of the highest levels and greatest examples of DOK 4 there is. Students are using extended thinking in all aspects of the project." It's been a learning curve but has such a rewarding outcome to see the finished product! Tricia lives in Cedar Hills with her husband and has 5 amazing children, 1 awesome son in law, and a new granddaughter who is the love of her life!

The Impact of Color and How to Use It Wednesday, 1:50- 2:50; Wednesday, 3:00-4:00 Color is the most powerful tool a designer can use. It has the most emotional impact and is the first element noticed in an interior. This session will cover the impact of color beyond aesthetics and explore how culture, generations, physiology, and emotions all effect reactions to color.

First Aid focuses on caring for some of the more common illness and diseases as well as bleeding and environmental dangers and treatments. **If teachers want to receive certification card the fee is $20 and they will receive their certification at the time of class. If the teacher would like a face shield barrier device they are $5. Payment preference is cash or check. This cost is separate and not paid for by the FACS conference.

Thursday, 10:30-11:30 This class will show you how to create and use SMASH Books for the Teen Living curriculum. It's an excellent way for students to create a book containing notes, study guides, reflection, self-evaluations that will become a tool used in the classroom and a keepsake for years to come. This class also will show I used Fight The New Drug website and resources to teach a lesson on pornography addiction that is very effective for students.

Teen Living- Learn by Doing Wednesday, 12:40 -1:40 Putting into practice “learn by doing,” this presentation will offer teachers activities easily related to students in the areas of career selection and preparation, development of interpersonal skills, and plans to help reach or accomplish something in the future. Callie Ward is an Extension Assistant Professor for Utah State University in Garfield County which is the 5th lowest populated county in Utah with a population of a little over 5,000 and has a total area of 5,208 square miles making it the 5th largest county. Her responsibilities cover youth development, rural communities, and family and consumer sciences.

Elizabeth Davis: Elizabeth Davis is an Assistant Professor of Extension at Utah State University. She received her B.S. in Family Consumer and Human Development and M.S. in Adolescent Development each from Utah State University. After working several years in non-profit and state funded organizations she returned to USU where she accepted a tenure position in 4-H and Family and Consumer Sciences. She is passionate about developmentally appropriate programming for adolescents. Particularly programming in the areas of STEM (science technology engineering and math). She currently resides in Kanab Utah where she enjoys the amazing outdoors and working in the community to offer research-based programming to all.

I will show them how I incorporate pathways into what I am already doing. I will show them how everyone can benefit from pathways. We had 92 students graduate last year and 135 pathways completed. I coordinated this effort.

Trauma Informed Care for Stress and Anxiety Thursday, 12:30 - 1:30; Thursday, 1:40 - 2:40 Stress is a normal part of life that we negotiate for survival, and in appropriate levels produces growth and learning. This presentation is about central nervous system processes that handle anxiety and stress, what to do to keep yourself in the normal stress range, and how to advise others for treatment. We will also explore the difference between stress/anxiety and trauma.

Heather Schauers: Heather Schauers is a therapist working at Successful Therapy in Lindon and LDS Family Services in Provo. She graduated from BYU with her Masters of Social Work degree in 2011 and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for the State of Utah.

A desire to make a yearly photobook or journal? This course will show you how to use google photos, create albums, understand facial recognition, and put it all into a Shutterfly Photobook. It is simple, fast and possible! Make the someday into today and remember it forever! Teachers need to bring: Please bring a zip drive or external hard drive with pictures you would like to organize and put into a photobook. There are lots of photobook printing sites, but this course will focus on using Shutterfly because of cost and ease.

As she made arrangements to continue to teach as she recovered, she discovered the tools she used could improve any FACS classroom. Lindsay Maxfield: Lindsay just finished her sixth year of teaching at Riverton High School. She loves going to work each day teaching students the importance of good nutrition and how enjoyable cooking can be. Lindsay is motivated to continually push herself to improve students learning opportunities. Lindsay has also been able to maintain her love of FCCLA as chapter adviser, adviser to multiple state officers, and recently as a board member. Lindsay has received multiple recognitions during her short career, but what keeps her going to work every day is her passion for the curriculum and impact she has in student lives.

Getting Middle School involved in FCCLA. Wednesday, 9:25-10:25 This class will get middle schoolers/teachers excited about FCCLA. I will talk about the things I do in school or class to promote FCCLA. There are some middle schools whose districts do not allow them to have FCCLA, but they can still talk about FCCLA and prepare them for FCCLA in high school.
