WHAT WE DO: IMATS
The International Make-Up Artist Trade Show is the world’s larg-est celebration of make-up artistry. Thousands of make-up artists, vendors and enthusiasts discuss, display and collect the best the industry has to offer. Make-up pros from fashion and film (includ-ing Oscar, BAFTA and Saturn award winners) provide education and demonstrations at IMATS, and new products often debut there. IMATS also features a Make-up Museum and the popular Battle of the Brushes, a global student make-up competition.
Established in 1997 by Emmy award-winning make-up artist Michael Key, IMATS has inspired other events but remains a staple in the industry. Like Make-Up Artist magazine, IMATS continues to educate and connect make-up artists and enthusiasts from around the world.
The show is held six times annually—in Los Angeles; New York; London; Toronto; Vancouver, British Columbia; and Atlanta.
BATTLE OF THE BRUSHES
Battle of the Brushes is an international student make-up compe-tition held at IMATS in each city. Kicking off in 1998, the compe-tition is an opportunity to shine a light on up-and-coming talent from make-up schools across the globe. Featuring two catego-ries—character/prosthetics and beauty/fantasy—16 competitors go head-to-head for a chance to win cash and prizes, along with the opportunity for their work to be seen onstage, in the pages of Make-Up Artist magazine and across IMATS social media chan-nels and the website. Past competitors have gone on to work for high-profile productions including: Game of Thrones, Pirates of the Caribbean, Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent and many more.
