Dear Parents and Students
“These are the words of a Jesuit priest who died in a very poor, black area of Washington DC, where he gained a wonderful reputa on for crea ng shelters for the homeless, providing meals and medical, dental and legal help. Among his papers a er his death at age 80 was found this note which he had wri en to himself.” It captures the aspira ons we have in the Igna an tradi on of educa onal excellence that our students be informed and involved and that they develop a deep desire to make a difference for good.
LORETO STUDENTS MAKING A DIFFERENCE
From Mary Ward Interna onal Execu ve Officer, Felicity Cos gan
“On behalf of Mary Ward Interna onal Australia (MWIA), I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to you and the students from the St Vincent de Paul, Interact and Mission Day student groups for fundraising an extremely generous $8172.00 for MWIA in support of the Fruit Trees in Kenya Project.
Then, in my dreams of the Last Day,
Our Lord will come back and reward us
for having, by His Grace,
straightened the world out,
and having the poor competent and the rich though ul
and the well‐protected kindly and generous and involved,
and the educated enthralled with the Kingdom of God,
and the spiritual able to perceive Him in such a way
as to make Him visible to us.

Your con nued support will help us make a difference to the thousands of people in Australia, Asia, Africa and other parts of the world. Once again, many thanks for your generosity and support.”
From the Director of the Centre for Mul cultural Pastoral Care, Anne Surtees osu
“Could you please pass on to your students our deep apprecia on for the financial contribu on that you have made to the refugees and migrants in Brisbane. The Centre for Mul cultural Pastoral Care supports pastoral ministers who work with newly arrived peoples from troubled countries around the world. Your contribu on will be put to very good use.
Once again a most sincere thank you for the generous contribu on to refugees.”
A CHALLENGE TO LORETO SCHOOLS
In the spirit of Mary Ward, the Loreto Province (Australia and South East Asia) are keen to see their Australian schools meet the following challenge in 2013. They, under the leadership of Sr Margaret Mary Flynn IBVM, have asked each Loreto school in Australia to
“establish a new enterprise/ini a ve to make quality educa on accessible to a community of significant disadvantage.”
This challenge has been the subject of recent discussions with staff, the school Leadership Team and the College Council. I very much look forward to hearing ideas from students and parents also and to the journey we have ahead of us in mee ng this challenge.
WELCOME TO THE YEAR 8’S OF 2013
Today we warmly welcomed 140 Year 7’s (the Year 8’s for 2013) as part of their induc on to Loreto. They enjoyed me in the different specialist areas; ge ng to know each other; and sampling a taste of ‘a day in the life of a Loreto girl’.
I thank the students and teachers involved for making this day so special.
CONGRATULATIONS
To the talented music students for the success of last weekend’s ‘Live & Wired’ event. Once again, the a ernoon showcased their amazing talents. Thank you to the Music Leaders, Music Staff, Friends of Music and the visi ng performers from Villanova and San Sisto for making the a ernoon so entertaining and enjoyable.
Yours sincerely

Although 28 September was the national on-time due date, students can continue to apply through the TTT online service for most courses, however, higher processing charges were applicable from 1 October. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as possible to allow sufficient time for QTAC to assess their application. If the course you are applying for has its major offer round on 13 December the due date to apply and provide supporting documentation is 3 December. For all other courses, applications received after 12 December and supporting documentation received after 17 December may not be assessed in time for the 17 January offer round. Please note, it is not possible to apply for courses with fixed closing dates that have passed. See the QTAC Guide, p. 4, for a comprehensive list of courses with fixed closing dates and visit the QTAC website.

Reminder - Overdue School Fees
Term 4 School Fees are now overdue and account rendered statements were sent out to all families who have an outstanding balance.
Loreto College’s continuing operational viability is dependent on two main sources of income: government grants from both federal and state jurisdictions and tuition fees from parents.
Ideally, we would like to have all fee accounts paid by the last day of term, which is Friday 16 November for Year 12 and Friday 30 November for Years 8 - 11. If you are experiencing financial difficulties and would like to discuss your situation in confidence, please call me at the College on 3394 9999.
Unless you have made prior arrangements with the finance Department at the College, please ensure these fees are paid as soon as possible. For those families who have been paying by instalments using the Direct Debit system please check that all outstanding fees and charges will be paid by the final date of your Direct Debit Request. If you require assistance in calculating this, please do not hesitate to contact Libby Oliver on 3394 9928 or by email: [email protected] Thank you. Darren Howell - Acting Business Manager

fÑÉÜàá WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá BSGSA Sport Basketball Round 6 This Week’s Draw: Open A vs Mt Alvernia at Loreto (MWC) Open B vs Lourdes Hill at Clem Jones, Carina (bus) Intermediate A vs Lourdes Hill at Clem Jones, Carina (bus) Intermediate B vs Mt St Michael’s at Loreto (outside court) Junior A vs All Hallows’ at All Hallows’ (bus) Junior B vs Brigidine at Brigidine (bus)
Round 5 Results Open A were defeated by All Hallows’ 45 – 14 In what was always going to be a tough assignment, Loreto came out strongly with plenty of home support. All Hallows’ were fast, accurate and strong in both offense and defence. Loreto maintained enthusiasm and commitment but could not compete at the same intensity as their opposition. Kristina Sams and Isabelle Mowen had strong games. Open B defeated Our Lady’s College 20 – 19 In a very close match, Loreto always looked the stronger team but could not assert any substantial lead in the match. Lauren Higgins, Sam Vickerman and Lauren Stacey had strong games. Mary-Kate Dennis was accurate in her shooting from the free throw line. With three minutes to go Loreto had 6 point margin and looked set for a win, but Our Lady’s fought strongly to make two quick baskets and take the game to a nail biting finish!
Intermediate A were defeated by Mt St Michael’s 42 – 32 Loreto started slowly and lacked the intensity of previous performances and allowed Mt St Michael’s to assert a strong lead. This ended up being the deciding factor as the remainder of the match saw even scoring. Prue Hempel and Mia Page had strong games. The skill level displayed by both teams throughout the match was excellent.
Intermediate B defeated San Sisto 43 – 19 A strong performance this week against some quality opposition. A blistering return to form for Georgia Johnson, contributing13 points, intercepts and blocked shots. Isobella Scott was also a force to be reckoned with, scoring 12 points and providing great defensive pressure.
Junior A defeated Lourdes Hill College 56 – 20 A very impressive and resounding win for this team. They are turning into a very skillful basketball team. Great rebounding by Adrianna Urbina and Zoe Sever. Mention must also go to Jessica Galpin, Victoria Flores-Rodriguez and Brianna O’Donnell.
Junior B were defeated by St Rita’s 29 – 10 Loreto started well but St Rita’s began to dominate as the match progressed. Loreto must improve communication and marking of players to enable a win next week. There were some drives to the basket but more were needed with back up support for the rebound. Amelia Abelrazek and Ryleigh Bennett had strong games. Nyree Wood - Netball Coordinator

Round 5 Reports (17 October) OPEN LOR (1) 13 defeated LHC(2) 1 A good win! However, lapses in defence around the ruck due to lack of talk is a concern. Additionally, all players must get ‘back to basics’ and run at the gap, not the player. Solid games from Meg Roberts, Sarah Pettiford and Emmeline Ball.

INTERMEDIATE A LOR 5 lost to SAN SISTO 6 A very scrappy game but still very close. A lot to work on at training! Keeleigh O’Hanlon played consistently.
INTERMEDIATE B LOR 8 defeated LHC(1) 4 Still room for improvement ! A good win !
JUNIOR LOR(1) 12 defeated SAN SISTO Nil Another brilliant attacking game, but even more pleasing is the nil scoreline. Well done!
LOR(2) 11 defeated LOR(3)1 LOR (2) A dynamic game from the team. Amanda Hansen ran into gaps accurately to score a number of times. A positive victory! LOR(3) The Junior C Loreto team was given a lesson in ball control and good rucking technique by the Junior B team. Howeve, Bridie Volling and Gabby North showed great initiative with some clever passing, gaining valuable ground on a number of occasions. Well done! Therese Begley - Touch Football Coordinator
Waterpolo Under 14 Team – The girls had an exceptional game against AHS. Although losing 6-3 they put up an outstanding fight, with Lauren Michael scoring two goals and Charlotte Grigson scoring one goal. Our defenders were excellent and they shut down the attack for most of the game. I look forward to the game next week. A reminder there will be training on Thursday afternoon with the other teams at Loreto pool. Coach: Oliver Chambers
Under 15 Team – Loreto Warriors had a 9 all draw against St Margaret’s with a lot of new faces in the team. This week our game plan was a bit disjointed. In the first quarter the girls were down 7 – 4. After a quick debrief and calm of the nerves the girls were settled and kept their composure throughout the rest of the quarter. They managed to turn the game around by the 3rd quarter at 7 draw. Leading into the 4th quarter the girls were up by one goal. After some confusing decisions by the refer-ees the girls came out with a lucky draw. Coach: James Duffy Under 18 Team – The team played well considering they were up against the Champion team from 2012. The Loreto Warriors were defeated by The Warriors team. The players from the opposition included some Loreto players as well as their coach. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the game and are learning new strategies of defence and attack each week. Well done girls! Coach: Mikaela Brogan.
ACHPER Sports Breakfast A small group of Year 12 girls attended the ACHPER QLD Annual Women in Sport Breakfast on Thursday 11 October. The girls had an opportunity to listen to an inspiring team of guest speakers share tips for success and stories of courage and determination. The speakers included: Carlee Beattie, Silver medallist in Long Jump at London Paralympics, Sue Hooper, Director of Centre of Excellence at QAS, Tom Sermanni, Head Coach of Australian Women's Soccer Team, Ameliaranne Wells, Queensland Firebirds and Emillee Cherry, UQ Sport Ambassador Scholarship Holder. Congratulations to Bridget Sankey (Year 12) who received a “Commended” award for Football at the Women in Sport Breakfast.

“Children grow up quickly and in what seems like the blink of an eye they have left school. Don’t let that special time pass without actively participating in their lives by playing a role at the school. You can do this in many ways, including nominating as a Parent Year Level Representative. Although the school year may be drawing to a close and thoughts turning to holidays, planning for next year is already underway. We are therefore now calling for nominations for 2013. What does it involve? Parent Year Level Representatives generate community spirit by organising events such as drinks by the pool, dinner and other social events. If you have attended one of these events and enjoyed it, consider the planning that went into it. However these are not onerous tasks and we are happy to refer you to others who have acted as reps to determine if this is something you would like to do. If you are interested in becoming a Year Representative in 2013, please email reply Trish Willing: [email protected] or complete the attached tear-off slip and return it to the office asap.” Garry West - P & F Secretary
