SECURITY CONCERNS For St. Agnes Parish
Prudence and Appropriateness meet Hospitality and Security. These words are the hallmarks of our Twenty-First Century World during these times of heightened concerns. Two years ago these items were discussed at the Annual Priest Spring Gather-ing in Carlinville. Experts from the FBI, State Police and the Secret Service were on hand to help us navigate this changing landscape. ST. AGNES SCHOOL The appropriate level of security for a school environment is comparatively enhanced to that of a church. Our School has Security Doors with bars in the middle and panic bars on the inside for easy exiting should that be needed. These doors are locked down and moni-tored with security cameras. These systems have been in place for over 6 years already. Our staff is trained multiple times throughout the year on differ-ing threat conditions and drills are practiced with our children during the year. Suffice to say our Children are in a very safe environment in our school and upgrades will continue as circumstances warrant. ST. AGNES CHURCH Our parish Church enjoys the security of the world in 1989 when it was built. Today’s concerns have substantially increased and so have our needs as prudence and appropriate-ness dictate. This includes the fact that our school children use the Church and Parish Hall throughout the week. The ability to “lock-down” the Church and “monitor” interior and exterior entryways are the first steps of necessary upgrades. Thus, Panic Bars on the doors in the Gathering Space and Parish Hall entryways are considered normative these days along with Security Cameras. This gives us the opportunity to safe-guard and remain hospitable. Should we need to “lock-down” the Church the panic bars allow for easy exit of the Church. Security Cameras give us a visual record and their very presence is a deterrence. As Pastor, I will work with the Finance Council and our School Leadership to move this process forward. Our Very Successful Capital Campaign may allow us the ability to rapidly implement these first steps as we have been blessed with lower bids than first projected. Please know our children’s safety and our parishioners’ safety and hospitality will find common ground in this unfolding Twenty-First Century here at St. Agnes Parish! – Fr. Dan
NO MASS Thursday, February 27
Friday, February 28 Fr. Dan will be away for his nephew’s wedding those days. Also a reminder that through March 20, weekday Masses will be held in the Parish Hall
due to installation of flooring and a new sound system in the Church.
The season of Lent begins this year on Ash Wednesday, February 26, and ends just prior to the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, April 9, when the Paschal Triduum
begins. Lent is the principal penitential season in the Church year. All of the Christian faithful are urged to develop and maintain a voluntary program of self-denial (in addition to the Lenten regulations which follow), serious prayer, and the performing of deeds of charity and mercy, including the giving of alms.
Lenten Regulations: 1. Abstinence – Everyone 14 years of age and
over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.
2. Fast – Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 is required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
3. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful.
On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is permitted. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength may be taken according to each person’s needs, but together these two meals should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids (including milk and fruit juices) are allowed.
Easter Flower Memorials
You may make a donation for Easter flowers and decorations in memory of a loved one. There is an envelope in your packet for this, or you can use a plain envelope. Mark on the envelope who the donation is in memory of.
Stations of the Cross & Soup Suppers
St. Agnes will celebrate the Stations of the Cross at 5:30 p.m. on the following Wednesdays of Lent: March 4, 11, 18, and April 1. A light soup supper
will follow. This will be held in the Parish Hall due to installation of flooring and sound system in the Church.
A LETTER FROM THE BISHOP (Church in Central and Eastern Europe)
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Soon our diocese will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. I ask for your support to this important mission.
The collection helps our brothers and sisters like the people of Armenia, who have experienced persecution and displacement throughout their history and now live scattered throughout the world – many in areas of the former Soviet bloc countries such as Georgia, Russia, and other areas of Eastern Europe. Coping with difficult life circumstances and often isolated from their religious and cultural heritage, Armenian Catholic youth are particularly vulnerable.
To address this situation in 2018, the Armenian Catholic Ordinariate of Eastern Europe, with help from our Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, hosted nearly 300 Armenian Catholic participants for a week of worship, study, pilgrimage, and fellowship. Not only did participants hear discussions on the theme “Identity, Belonging, and Witnessing,” but together they also participated in sessions on Catholic social teaching, witnessed ordinations and the clothing of seminarians in their vestments, and worshipped at monastic complexes. Your invaluable support of this effort helped build their faith, unity, and solidarity, thereby strengthening Armenian Catholic youth in Eastern Europe.
Please be generous to the collection, because your support helps foster nurturing communities in which youth can share and grow in faith. For more information about the collection and who it supports, visit www.usccb.org/ccee. Thank you for your help to restore the Church and build the future in Central and Eastern Europe. Sincerely yours in Christ, +Most Reverend Thomas John Paprocki Bishop of Springfield in Illinois
