Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God 'The venerable choir of the divine apostles was reunited in
a marvelous manner to bury your most pure body, O glorious Mother of God. With them the multitude of angels also sings
in honor of your passage to heaven which we now celebrate in faith.'
With boldness the Church addresses the Mother of God, the
first to be divinized by grace, with the words; 'Most Holy
Mother of God, save us.' The Church does so with the
understanding that it is God's grace that saves and acts in her.
Her peaceful death, tranquil as sleep in the fullness of grace,
became an awakening into heaven itself; it is appropriately
called the Dormition-Falling Asleep.
The Dormition of the Mother of God is portrayed in the
icon of the feast as a birth into heaven; Christ holds in his
arms the soul of Mary, wrapped in swaddling clothes. In the
celebration of the Dormition, the Church professes that in her
death the Mother of God did not undergo bodily corruption,
but has been 'translated from earth to heaven', raised body and
soul into the heavenly glory of the Lord. From among the
human race, the Mother of God was the first to be glorified in
her body.
The Mother of God, being the Mother of Life, was
transferred to Life; and 'in her Dormition she did not abandon
the world'. When exiting the church, the Dormtion of the
Mother of God and the Fearful (Last) Judgment are
customarily depicted at the exit of the church to remind us that
we are to think of the end of our earthly life in the light of the
Mother of God's blessed Dormition, totally offering ourselves
into the hands of the Lord, or if is the Fearful (Last Judgment)
- to be ready to answer before God for the life we are living. (Christ our Pascha-Catechism of the Ukrainian Catholic Church #313, 508)
'Rejoice, Mary, Advocate who did not abandon us after
your Dormition, and save all those who put their trust in you.'
