The comprehensive range of Carrier 39F air handling units is the result of detailed research in the areas of thermal technology, aerodynamics and acoustics. The wide range of 23 models offers air flows from 280 l/s to 27000 l/s.
Features
■
Flexible modular constructionThe unique modular unit design enables Carrier to offer the right technical solution for any application, using minimum floor space. The units can be delivered in sections for indoor or outdoor installation, completely assembled, par-tially assembled or knocked-down for on-site assembly. Technical on-site assistance from Carrier is available, if required.
■
Solid constructionWith their profiled frames and vertical reinforcements the Carrier series 39FD, FX air handling units are extremely rigid, and suitable for high-pressure applications with increased air flow.
■
Thermal and acoustic insulation in two thicknesses:25 mm for model 39FD50 mm for model 39FX.
■
Simple connectionThe supply duct is directly connected to the air handling unit, without transition piece.
■
AestheticsThe standard construction features profiled galvanised steel frames, and the panels are painted on the outside.
■
Easy maintenanceThe standardised components are interchangeable. Access to these components is facilitated by easily removable panels and access doors.
■
Optimum product designCarrier, world leader in air conditioning, has a research, production and laboratory test facility that enables Carrier to propose the best technical/quality/price compromise. The technical selection is optimised by the Flex-Air soft-ware.
■
ConformityConformity with applicable European environment and safety standards, and with the European performance standards.

Identification
The 39FD, FX line of Carrier air handling units is based on a modular principle. The number of modules respectively in height and in width determines the cross-section availa-ble for air flow and encodes the unit size. The unit length is
determined by the number and size of the component parts required. The service side (connections and access) is defined as right hand or left hand in the direction of the air flow.

Plate heat recovery systemsGeneral
■ The plate heat recovery coil consists of several layers of plates, alternatively folded and plain so that they form flow channels.Each row of channels is arranged perpendicular to the preceding channel, and the fresh air flow and return air flow cross across the heat exchanger.
Standards compliance
■ EUROVENT 10/1■ ENV 308
Construction
■ The heat exchanger consists of aluminium plate assem-blies, installed diagonally in the casing. Silicone seals assure complete air tightness. The lower part of the casing forms a water-tight pan to recover possible condensate.
Freeze-upDirect intake of fresh air into the unit might cause freezing of the heat exchanger. The critical temperature at which freezing might occur depends on the temperature and the relative humidity of the return air, as well as on the proportion of outside air to return air. The freeze-up zone must not be exceeded. Freezing can be prevented by increasing the fresh air temperature, either with preheat or by recycling a part of the return air or by bypassing a part of the outside air.
Symbols

Construction
■ The electric resistance elements are mounted in a galva-nised steel frame sized to suit the internal dimensions of the air handling unit. They are prewired and include a ter-minal board for power and control connections. A safety thermostat with manual reset opens at 90°C and is located on the upper side of the coil frame. If a electric heating coil is located close to a filter bank or an electric motor an anti-radiation screen must be inserted.

Passive silencersGeneral
■ Passive sound attenuation:Passive attenuation uses the sound absorption properties of mineral fibres, permitting high-efficiency sound absorption in the high-frequency range (> 500 Hz).
Construction
■ Passive attenuationSound attenuation is achieved with the aid of incombusti-ble mineral wool panels (MO), inserted into galvanised frames placed parallel to the air flow direction. The sur-faces exposed to the air currents are treated with glass wool to prevent corrosion.The standard thickness of the baffles is 200 mm.
Features
■ Static■ Efficient at high frequencies■ Variable length, depending on the attenuation
Options
■ Perforated double-skin casing/casing protected against salting-out
■ Baffle with launchers■ Baffle with perforated sheet metal and cover to protect
against salting-out

Construction
■ Active attenuationThe Quieteq system is an acoustic assembly capable of recording the fan noise and emitting an identical sound opposed to the phase direction.Control is fully automatic.It consists of:- Loudspeaker(s)- Input microphones- Output microphones- Controller - microprocessorThe controller automatically adjusts the sound level to be emitted.The system can be integrated into the unit or installed separately.

A - Fans
General
■ Fan laws:
The volume (Q) changes as the fan speed (n) changes
Q2 = Q1
The pressure (p) changes with the square of the speed (n)
p2 = p1
The absorbed power (Pabs) changes with the cube of the speed (n)
Pw2 = Pw1
Q = volume, n = speed, p = pressure, Pw = power.
The fan curves refer to air of a specific weight of 1.2 kg/m3 at a temperature of 20°C and at atmospheric pressure of 101325 Pa and a relative humidity of 50%.Other conditions require correction.
Standards compliance
■ All impellers are statically and dynamically balanced G 6.3 in accordance with ISO 1940.
Construction
■ Fan casings are constructed of galvanised steel sheet with-out welding, with a series of punched holes or welded nuts to allow the fixing of accessories such as frames or support legs.
■ The impeller is rustproof and securely fixed to the shaft.■ Fan shafts are of steel machined to close tolerances and
protected by anti-corrosive paint.■ High precision ball bearings are permanently lubricated.
Single-row ball bearings are supplied on fan sizes 180 to 710. Permanently lubricated double-row bearings in cast-iron housings with rubber anti-vibration fittings, fixed to the fan frame, are supplied on sizes 800 to 1000.
■ Sizes16 forward and backward curved impeller sizes are availa-ble:180, 200, 225, 250, 280, 315, 355, 400, 450, 500, 560, 630, 710, 800, 900 and 1000.

L = length in modulesThe length varies depending on the fan size, motor capac-ity and air handling unit configuration.
C - Drives
General and construction
■ Transmission of power from motor to fan is provided by means of a set of fixed-diameter, adjustable-pitch pulleys and matching trapezoidal belts.
■ The calculation of the power to be transmitted takes the fol-lowing into consideration:- the belt transmission loss coefficient- the effect of the proximity of walls- manufacturing tolerances for each component
Standards compliance
■ NFT 37141 (belt length)■ NFT 47144 (trapezoidal sections)
Options
■ Transmission boxThe protection box is made of a galvanised steel grille con-struction to minimise pressure losses at the fan suction side.

Features
■ Cooling coil valve control to maintain the temperature at the setpoint value for occupied or unoccupied mode.
■ Heating coil valve control to maintain the temperature at the setpoint value for occupied or unoccupied mode.
■ Inlet guide vane control to maintain the system static pres-sure (variable air flow).
■ Variable speed controller to maintain the system static pres-sure (variable air flow).
■ Morning warm-up of the system - optimisation of starts/stops.
