January 27, 2016
The Junior Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers-Lungsod ng Maynila Student
Chapter and Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers – Lungsod ng Maynila in partnership
with the Far Eastern University – Institute of Technology will hold its very first “JPICE-LNM
Student Research Congress 2015”. The said activity aims to give students ideas what
Research and Development (R&D) is all about. To support these objectives, we have
invited speakers to present the current trends, innovations, and existing technologies
including intellectual property rights on the different fields of Civil Engineering like
Transportation Engineering, Water Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, StructuralEngineering, Project Management and Construction Engineering, and Environmental
and Energy Engineering.
Objectives:
To encourage students from the 15 LNM Member Schools and other non-LNM
schools to participate in sending their thesis proposals/abstracts in order for them
to have a better idea on what Research and Development is all about
To seek for promising student researchers who are in need of funds and
acknowledgement to support their research study
To deliver to the students the real situation, current technologies used, and the
common trends in the present situations in the different fields of Civil Engineering:
Structural Engineering, Construction Management, Water Engineering,
Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, and Transportation
Engineering through speakers who are successful in their respective fields
To help the students realize and decide on which track to pursue in the field of
Civil Engineering through the career talk those speakers from the respective
areas of Civil Engineering will be giving them

The research proposal must answer the “NABC”.
An NABC comprises the four fundamentals that define a project's value
proposition:
Need: What are our client's needs? A need should relate to an important and
specific client or market opportunity, with market size and end customers clearly
stated.
Approach: What is our compelling solution to the specific client need? Draw it,
simulate it or make a mockup to help convey your vision. As the approach
develops through iterations, it becomes a full proposal or business plan, which
can include market positioning, cost, staffing, partnering, deliverables, a
timetable and intellectual property (IP) protection. If we are developing a
product, it must also include product specifications, manufacturing, distribution
and sales.
Benefits: What are the client benefits of our approach? Each approach to a
client's need results in unique client benefits, such as low cost, high performance
or quick response. Success requires that the benefits be quantitative and
substantially better - not just different. Why must we win?
Competition/alternatives: Why are our benefits significantly better than the
competition? Everyone has alternatives. We must be able to tell our client or
partner why our solution represents the best value. To do this, we must clearly
understand our competition and our client's alternatives. For a commercial
customer, access to important IP is often a persuasive reason to work with us. But,
whether to a commercial or government client, we must be able to clearly state

why our approach is substantially better than that of the competition. Our
answer should be short and memorable
Research title, complete contact information about the author should be included and
detailed Research& Development Project Proposal must be submitted not later than
January 13, 2015 addressed through email to [email protected] with subject
RCongress_School Name and an attachment in MS WORD file format.
Authors of selected research proposal will be announced a week before the
competition (January 27, 2016) and selected researcher-participants must prepare a
power point presentation and the authors of selected research proposal will be given a10-minute presentation discussing the “NABC” including preparation.
The scores of the finalists will be coming from the audiences and from the judges.
Breakdown:
10% - from the audiences
90% - from the judges
NOTE:
Technical Guidelines will be given to the selected Research authors. Technical
Guidelines will include the detailed breakdown of score and the Provision of Awarding.
