DAN SALANSKYYOUTH VOLUNTEEROF THE YEAR Inspired by his on-ice volunteer efforts for SA-BAH, Dan Salansky is an extraordinary young man who continues to give more of himself to the organiza-tion through fundraising efforts for both the Skate-A-Thon and self-intiated fundraising opportunities. This young man, only 14 years old, is annually one of the top pledge winners at SABAH”S Skate-A-Thon. With the help of his fam-ily, Dan is also in the early stages of planning for his own fundraising event for the organization. Dan began his volunteer service for SABAH when he was only 9 years old. Now in his fifth season with the organization, this St. Fran-cis High School student is a SABAH partner for Jeff Vance. Each Saturday morn-ing, when most teens are still in bed, Dan arrrives at the Hamburg Rink early to help Jeff and the other SA-BAH athletes take to the ice. With tremendous apprecia-tion for his years of service, SABAH is pleased to name this inspirational young man as this year’s Hamburg Ice Rink Youth Volunteer of the Year. Daniel is the son of Karen & Dan Salansky of Derby. ________

NOLAN EARNS CERTIFICATIONIN PHOTOGRAPHY Emily Nolan of Nolan-Skipper Studios in Brant has earned the Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) designation from the Professional Photographic Certification Commission. Nolan earned this designa-tion after meeting rigorous requirements measuring her artistic and technical competence. According to the certification commis-sion website, Nolan is one of three Certified Profes-sional Photograhers in Erie County. The Professional Photographic Certification Commision currently rec-ognizes less than 2,000 Certified Professional Pho-tographers nationwide. “I sought certification to show that NolanSkipper Studios is different from your typical portrait studio. We care about our clients and want to give them the best experience possible Attaining certification is one of the most challeng-ing things I’ve ever done. Today, anyone with a digital camera can create a website and call themselves a pro-fessional photographer, but many don’t have the skills and training necessary to capture timeless images.. going through the certifica-tion process shows my dedi-cation to the photographic community and capturing the art of your life. Proving I have what is takes to attain the Certified Professional Photographer designation is a dream come true.” Nolan is a studio and location, portrait and wed-ding photographer. She specializes in newborns, seniors and weddings, and has a home studio in Brant where she resides with her husband and two children. A second home studio, owned by her partner, Chuck Skipper, CPP, is located in Orchard Park. Clients are scheduled by appointment. NolanSkipper Studios work can be seen throughout vari-ous offices in Western New York and on their web-site at www.nolanskipper studios.com ________
On March 13, Mrs. Jennifer Hill’s 4th grade class and Mrs. Kelly Santa-Lucia’s 5th grade class students had the op-portunity to see the play, “Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad” at Buffalo State, presented by Theatre IV. It was in-teresting for the 4th and 5th graders to be able to experience the adventures of Harriet Tubman and to learn how she helped slaves escape to freedom. From the Performing Arts Website - The stirring drama with music was classic tribute to the great American hero who freed herself and thousands of
SCS ATTENDS BUFF STATE PLAYher people from the bonds of slavery. The story began with young Harriets’s early life as a slave. Soon Harriet decided she wanted to be a free woman and risked her life to go North. She is later persuaded to go South as a conductor on the Under-ground Railroad assisting other slaves to find their way to freedom. At the start of the Civil War, Harriet became a spy for the Union Army, and later a nurse and a scout. However, the end of the war does not end Harri-ets’s struggles for freedom. PET FIRST AID ARTICLE - CORRECTIONIn last week’s issue of the Pennysaver, the article in the center spread, entitled “Do’s and Don’ts of Pet First Aid,” had an error. In the paragraph about choking, we inad-vertently wrote that “If you see a foreign object, do not attempt to remove it.” It should have read, “If you see a foreign object, DO attempt to remove it.” We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

LSC HIGH SCHOOLFOLLOWSRESPONSE PLAN The Lake Shore School District and Evans Police Department followed re-sponse plans this week after graffiti was discovered in a High School student bath-room that generated some concern. During times of elevated concern, the District enacts response plans and works with law enforcement agen-cies to preserve a safe edu-cational environment. The Evans Police Depart-ment had an increased pres-ence at the High School and will continue to investigate the graffiti and assist the District in any way neces-sary to preserve the safety of the students, staff and school community. “We are aware of ru-mors and speculation in the media and our com-munity. We appreciate the concern and cooperation of our students, staff, parents and school community. The High School students and staff are to be commended for their total cooperation today. Our High School Principal Julie Hoerner, up-dated students at the close of the instructional day and the District activated Global Connect, an automatic call system, to notify parents of today’s events,” Super-intendent of School James Przepasniak said. “Safety is our number one priority. As a School District we evaluate every situation on an individual basis with law enforcement. We have response plans in place and respond to all concerns regarding safety of our students, staff and school community,” Mr. Przepasniak said. “Parents and school com-munity members can assist their children, police, and school district by remaining calm in any future situations that may occur,” Evans Police Department Captain Charles Danzi said. Town of Evans Police and Canine officers from the Niagara Frontier Transit Police and the Erie County Sherriff’s Office were on campus throughout the day without incident. All District events and school activities continued as scheduled.

ALL-NATURAL WAYS TO ...The quickest fix to a problem is not always the best fix. Many convenience items are full of chemicals that may not be safe for the environment. And although many medications may be ideal for treating ailments, some people prefer a more natural method to treat certain ailments. There are many all-natural items that can be put to use for personal care and home care if you know where to look. It is important to note that some supplements or herbs are not adviseable for pregnant women or those with certain conditions. Therefore it’s best to check with a doctor or pharmacist before beginning any regimen.... GET RID OF ANTSMake a sweet solution of sugar water and borax, also known as sodium tetraborate. Borax is not toxic, but it should not be ingested, and it may cause minor skin irritation. You can also try substituting washing soda for the borax, which is sodium carbonate. The ants will feed on the solution, take it back to the colony, and eventually the numbers will dwindle.... REDUCE IRRITATION FROM A STINGApply a paste of baking soda and water to the sting, and it will help reduce the pain and swelling. This also may work on jellyfish stings and on other bug bites.... FALL ASLEEP MORE QUICKLYPassion flower is known to produce mild sedative effects that can help induce sleep. Passion flower can be found in tinctures, teas and capsules. In tea form it can be mixed with chamomile to improve flavor and boost even further relaxing feelings.... RELIEVE NASAL CONGESTIONA stuffy nose can make sleeping difficult, contribute to a dry throat from mouth-breathing and just be a nuisance. There are many different ways to open up nasal passages. Saline solutions that are sprayed or misted into the nose can loosen mucus and help it to drain. The same principal applies when using a neti pot. Eating spicy foods, such as hot peppers, wasabi or jerk seasonings, can also temporarily cause the nose to run and alleviate pressure.... REMOVE GRASS STAINSUsing the wrong items can set in a grass stain quickly. Wet the stain with rubbing alcohol and let dry to dissolve some of the stain. Then wet the fabric with water, pour detergent right on the stain and wash as usual.... CLEAN UP PET ACCIDENTSPet urine can stain and smell. Quick clean-up is key, but use a product that will neutralize odor. Oxygen powder bleach diluted in a bucket of water can be used as a carpet shampoo. It will clean up the stain and remove the odor.
... REMOVE A WARTCoat skin around the wart with petroleum jelly to protect it. Soak a small piece of cotton in apple cider vinegar and place it directly on the wart. Cover with medical tape or a bandage and repeat daily. The vinegar will kill the wart in a matter of days or weeks.... TREAT DANDRUFFMedicated shampoos and products can smell harsh and leave hair lifeless. Tea tree oil already found in shampoos can be applied to the scalp as a separate therapeutic step to help reduce dryness and dandruff.... EXTERMINATE HOUSEHOLD BUGS All sorts of insects like to come indoors from time to time. While many are harmless and some can be beneficial (like spiders), most people care not to cohabitate with six- or eight-legged friends. Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a powdery substance made from small crustaceans. It is typically used as a swimming pool filter medium to trap dirt. The drying properties of DE can be used to eliminate bugs. Insects walk through a sprinkling placed in areas where they are often found (such as crevices in a basement). The sharp, microscopic edges of the DE penetrate the insects’ exoskeleton and the product also dries out the tender internal ares. DE can be irritating to the skin, and the dust should not be breathed in, but generally the product is safe in small amounts and non-toxic, unlike bug sprays.... KEEP A POOL OR SPA CLEANMany people think they need a host of chemicals to keep a pool or spa clean and healthy or spend a lot of money doing so. If you read the labels of many “pool” chemicals, they’re actually household items you probably have on hand. Sanitize and keep the pool clean with ordinary household bleach or sodium hypochlorite. Raise pH in a pool with washing soda used in laundry. Raise the total alkalinity of water with baking soda. Match up the chemical names to the ingredients on bags of pool products, and you just may find you’re spending more money when you could simply shop in the laundry aisle.... POLISH CHROME ON CARSUse vinegar full strength on a rag and wipe the chrome components until nice and shiny. Metal parts that have been rusted can also be soaked clean in undiluted vinegar overnight. With little knowledge, people can remedy many ail-ments with all-natural products that are safer on the environment and the body.

IS IT TIME TO PLANT? How do we know when to plant? The an-swers to this question are countless. There are lots of indicators that people from different back-grounds use to tell when it is the time to plant. Here are a few that we have found useful. St. Patrick’s Day is the planting date for early peas - after which it usually snows - that’s okay. Perennials could be divided or planted if they have been grown cold. Rose bushes, shrubs and trees are ready for planting. When the forsythia blooms, you can plant seeds or hardened off plants of the families of beet, cabbage, carrot, celery, chard, endive, garlic, lettuce, onion, potato, radish, spinach, and lettuce directly out into the garden; it is also time for the cold hardy pansy, viola, snapdrag-on and alyssum. When the leaves of the oak trees come out, it’s time to start seeding beans, corn, cucumber, pumpkin and squash. Plant your tender veggies - tomatoes, peppers, mel-ons, eggplant, cucumber and tender annuals - begonias, geraniums, marigold, morning glory, petunia, salvia, and zinnia plants; after the last full moon of May. This year 2012 May’s last full moon is very early, May 5th, so be extra careful. As always, watch out for a frost. Cover ten-der plants with “row cover,” cloth or paper, not plastic, to protect them from frost, wind and the full sun. Keep the warm loving plants, vines, to-matoes, peppers, and eggplant warm with “row covers,” hot caps, or “walls of water”. It is that time again. Happy Planting!

EVANS DEMO CLUB NEWS The pledge to the flag was led by School Board candidate Kenny West at the April meeting of the Evans Democratic Club. He is running because he wants to see the district improve its graduation rate, reduce class size, and to reduce the size of the management roll The Club welcomed new member Joe Ianni, a lifelong resident of Evans. He is a 29 year veteran of the Highland Hose Volun-teer Fire Company where he serves as secretary and safety officer. He is a past treasurer of the North Ev-ans Fire District. Candidates for local office addressed the Club. David Shenk, Erie County Comptroller, will be run-ning for the unexpired term vacated by Mark Po-loncarz. He is a former Town Clerk for the Town of Boston and his cousin is former Evans Town Clerk Carol Meissner. He received the 2011 Erie County Town Clerk of the Year in recognition of his service. He resigned that position to serve as Erie County Comptroller. He is a Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan veteran who has served on the County Library Board. Upon his return from Afghanistan in 2011, he announced his candidacy for County Comptroller. He wants county audits to involve the departments so that they are working towards a solution. He wants to see the Control Board in sunset to save the county taxpay-ers the cost of running the board. Mark Panepinto is a candidate for the redrawn 60th district of the NYS Senate, which includes the Towns of Evans Brant. Panepinto is an attorney who represents injured workers in personal injury lawsuits. His South-towns coordinator is Angola na-tive Mike Schraft, who in 2008 presented the VFW and American Legion two American flags which were carried in missions in Iraq. Panepinto is originally from Tonawanda and a longtime active Democrat in Zone 23 of the City of
Buffalo (on the west side). His father was a construc-tion worker and his mother was a beautician; he was the first in his family to go to college. He wants to bring tax fairness to New York and to reform how IDA’s are making towns compete against each oth-er. He will downsize his practice of law in order to devote himself to the State senate. Charles Swanick is also a candidate for the new 60th district. Swanick is a former county legislator who recently retired from CSX. He has been go-ing door-to-door for two months to hear from the voters. The primary issue is the New York economy; second, jobs -- which is tied to the first. Voters want New York to stop being the highest-taxed state in the nation; and voters want an end to state budget deficits. If businesses obtain tax breaks, then the breaks should mean the business stays in New York. As county legislator, he spent a lot of time in Evans as Chair of the legislative agricultural district com-mittee. His former County district is contained in the new state Senate district. He has the endorsement of the Conservative com-mittee. As a retiree he will make this a full-time job. He is committed to state policies to improve the delivery of low-cost elec-tricity to businesses located in New York State. Town board member Paul Cooper reported on the Town’s efforts to rent a larger dredger for Sturgeon Point. The Lake Erie Beach cleanup is this Saturday. The command center is Lake Erie Beach Fire Hall. The electronic recycling program has been a big success; this is located in the shed behind the Water Department. Once items are dropped off, they be-come the property of the Town. Folks from Solar Liberty are coming to the Town Hall to assess for the use of solar panels on Town buildings. The Town Court Clerk Maryanne Baake obtained a grant for office furniture for the court area. There is a public hearing on May 2nd to address a water rate increase.
He is committed to final-izing the takeover of the water operations by the Erie County Water Authority. Town C le rk Jon i ca DiMartino discussed her department’s efforts to man-age old records which is a work in progress. There has been an increase in issuance of fishing licenses due to the change of season. The department is also collect-ing tax bills until the end of June. Angola mayor Howard M. “Hub” Frawley reported that property taxes remained flat in the Village. He updat-ed the status of the County-wide land banking program. The Village was successful in getting CSX to repair its bridge in the Village. The Village-wide garage sale is June 2nd from 9am to 5pm. The board passed a resolu-tion to move the depot with a $40,000 state recreation grant. Town chair Robert “Bob-cat” Catalino reported that there will be a Southtowns Democratic event on June 10th at Sturgeon Point with a picnic from 10-4pm. The Presidential primary is on April 24. Club president Michelle Parker reminded everyone about the School Board election on Tuesday, May 15, 9-9pm at the Senior High. Next Club meeting will be on May 15 at 7:30 p.m at the VFW.

Meet the Candidates NightMeet the Candidates Night will be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 6 p.m. in the Senior High School Auditorium. There are five candidates running for two open seats on the Board of Education. Board Candidates are as follows: Jennifer S. Farrell, David R. Lopez, Richard A. There is no doubt that posters with pictures are powerful. We are drawn to pictures, but sometimes pictures can be disturbing and scary. In our hallway of truth, Lake Shore freshmen proj-ects are proudly displayed to teach the entire Lake Shore community about the dangers of prescrip-tion drugs, street drugs, binge drinking, bullying, eating disorders, teen-age pregnancy, S.T.D.’s, self-inflicting harm and suicide. Students and teachers alike, cannot help but read and look at
FRESHMEN LEARN ABOUT ADDICTIONS
these powerful, truthful, yet scary projects, as they pass through the halls. At times, some people may plead ignorance when it comes to not knowing the dangers of addictions in life, but no Lake Shore freshman will be able to use ignorance as an excuse. They are too unique, spe-cial, important, educated and loved to lower them-selves to using and abusing drugs, alcohol or take their lives. They will not be sad statistics; they will be proud, healthy and success-ful Lake Shore graduates of the Class of 2015.

EVANS GARDEN CLUB THE GREEN PATHBE A FRIEND TO OUR
POLLINATORS At our town’s recent En-vironmental Fair, a brochure from the US Department of Agriculture Natural Resourc-es Conservation Service had such interesting information that it would be nice to share some of it with you. Three-fourths of the world’s flowering plants de-pend on pollinators to repro-duce. Most fruit, vegetable and seed crops - and other plants that provide fiber, med-icines and fuel - are pollinated by animals. And scientists estimate that 1 out of every 3 bites of food we eat exists because of animal pollina-tors like bees, butterflies and moths, birds and bats, and beetles and other insects. The bad news is that polli-nators are in trouble. Habitat loss, disease, parasites and environmental contaminants are contributing to the decline of many species. But you can help in the following ways: • Use pollinator-friendly plants in your landscape. Shrubs and trees such as dogwood, blueberry, cherry, plum, willow and poplar provide pollen and/or nectar early in spring when food is scarce. • Choose a mixture of plants - different colors, shapes and scents attract a wide variety of pollinators. • Reduce or eliminate pes-ticide use in your landscape. If you do use them, please use them sparingly and responsi-bly. • Provide clean water for pollinators with a shallow dish, bowl or birdbath with half-submerged stones for perches. • Leave dead trees in your wooded landscape for wood-nesting bees and beetles. • Support land conserva-tion in the community by helping to create gardens and green spaces to ensure that pollinators have appropriate habitat. Of interest: The honey-bee alone contributes to the production of many billions of dollars worth of crops in America every year.T Hummingbirds are the most common avian pollina-tors in the continental U.S. These tiny wonders prefer tubular flowers in bright, warm colors, especially red, Join us on a Green Path to leave a positive impact on ourselves, our town and our world. Small changes make a big difference.

ARE THERE CONTAMINANTS IN OUR DRINKING WATER? As the State regulations require, your drinking water is routinely tested for numerous contaminants. These contaminants include: microbiological compounds such as total coliform and E.coli bacteria, turbidity, inorganic compounds such as nitrate and lead, volatile organic compounds, total trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, and radiological compounds. Attached to this report is a “2010 Water Quality Monitoring Report – Annual Water Quality Report Supplement”, prepared by the Erie County Water Authority. The tables presented depict which compounds were tested for and which compounds were detected or not detected in your drinking water. The State allows testing for some contaminants less than once per year because the concentrations of these contaminants do not change frequently. Some of the data, though representative, are more than one year old. It should be noted that all drinking water, including bottled drinking water, may be reasonably expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791) or the Erie County Health Department at (716-961-6800). As the State regulations require, we have tested your drinking water for the following contaminants. These contaminants include: total coliform, copper and lead. As noted below there were no detections of Coliform in any of the monthly samples we collected through 2011. Additionally, there were no exceedences for copper or for lead in the last residential sampling round in September 2010. All of the copper and lead samples tested, fell under the respective action levels for copper and lead.

Notes:
1 - During 2011 we collected and analyzed 10 water samples for copper and lead. The action level for lead and copper was not exceeded at any of the sites tested. The level presented represents the 90th percentile of the 10 sites tested. A percentile is a value on a scale of 100 that indicates the percent of a distribution that is equal to or below it. The 90th percentile is equal to or greater than 90% of the copper values detected at your water system.
2 - The value noted is the average for the entire year of sampling. The range varies depending on the amount originally injected by the Erie County Water Authority. Definitions: Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible.

♦ Saving water reduces the cost of energy required to pump water and the need to construct costly new wells, pumping systems and water towers; and
♦ Saving water lessens the strain on the water system during a dry spell or drought, helping to avoid severe water use restrictions so that essential fire fighting needs are met.
You can play a role in conserving water by becoming conscious of the amount of water your household is using, and by looking for ways to use less whenever you can. It is not hard to conserve water. Conservation tips include: ♦ Automatic dishwashers use 15 gallons for every cycle, regardless of how many dishes are loaded. So get a run for
your money and load it to capacity. ♦ Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. ♦ Check every faucet in your home for leaks. Just a slow drip can waste 15 to 20 gallons a day. Fix it and you can
save almost 6,000 gallons per year. ♦ Check your toilets for leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank, watch for a few minutes to see if
the color shows up in the bowl. It is not uncommon to lose up to 100 gallons a day from one of these otherwise invisible toilet leaks. Fix it and you save more than 30,000 gallons a year.
SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS System Improvements: A few of the older fire hydrants were replaced during 2011. There are very few of the old original hydrants left in the Village system as they have been regularly replaced over the years to maintain good operational hydrants and also to keep the yearly cost of the replacement project in line with available funding. The Village Board allowed the Angola Volunteer Fire Department and their Explorers Scout Post to conduct a “hydrant painting/decorating contest”. Many hydrants in the Village have been thoughtfully and creatively “decorated”- painted by people who expressed an interest in participating in the contest. A water system flushing plan has been updated and reviewed and will see the entire system thoroughly flushed and tested on a regular basis. Security and emergency response planning have always been an important part of managing your drinking water system. Recent events have made homeland security a national priority. The Village of Angola has received approval from the State Department of Health for our completed/revised Emergency Response Plan. The Village Board asks that anyone living near any of the Village’s water facilities, including the water tower, hydrants, and the various meter pits, to be aware of who is entering or working at these facilities. All Village-owned equipment is marked as such and Village employees all carry identification. Any suspicious persons or vehicles should be reported to the Police by dialing 911, or calling directly to 549-3600. The 500,000 gallon 150 foot high water tower that was constructed off Commercial Street in the late 1990’s holds the communities required 24-hour supply of water and helps to pressurize the entire Village distribution system.
