Blank Preparation1. Cuttheblankabout1/8"longerthantheBrassTubetoallow for“blow-out”orholeelongation.
2. Drilltheblankwitha27/64"drillbitataspeedof900to 1200RPM.
3. PolishtheBrassTubewith220gritsandpapertoremove oxidationandroughenthetube.Thiscanbedonebyhandor bychuckingitinadrillpressorportablehanddrill.
4. PreparetogluewithmediumCA(cyanoacrylate)glueor two-partfastdryingepoxy.
5. Applythegluetotheoutsideofthetubewithaliberalamount aroundthetubeendthatisinsertedfirst.Donotapplyglue
totheinsideoftheblank,asthiswillcausethegluetoget insidetheBrassTubeandruinthetube.
6. Insertthetubewithatwistingmotionintotheblankuntilthe tubeisequidistantbetweenbothendsoftheblank.Wipeoff anyexcessglueontheendsoftheblank.Allowtheglue todry.
7. Usingabarreltrimmer,disk,orbeltsander,trimtheendsof theblankuntilyoucanjustseethebrightbrassendsofthe tube.Thefaceoftheendsmustbeperpendiculartothe BrassTubeandparallelwitheachother.Itisimperativeto matchthelengthofthetrimmedblanktotheoriginallength oftheBrassTubeandthattheinsideoftheBrassTubeis cleanandfreeofanyglue.
Turning the Blank1. Assembletheblankonthemandrelwiththebushingsplaced asshowninthepictureabove.Eachbushinghasastepthat isdesignedtobeinsertedintotheBrassTubeforstability whileturning,astheinnerdiameterofthetubeislargerthan themandrel.Notethatallofthebushingsarethesamesize. Note:EitherWoodSpacersorextraBushingsmaybeused tofilltheextraspaceonthemandrel.
2. Tightenthetailstockandthentightenthemandrelnutthat holdstheblank.Donotover-tightenthetailstockormandrel nutasthismaycausethemandreltoflex,causingtheblank togooutofround.
3. Turntheblanktothedesiredshape,makingsurethatthe surfacesnexttothebushingsareturnedtothesame diameterasthebushings.
4. Afterturning,sandthesurfacesinprogressivestepsof 220,400,600,and1000grit.Ifahigherfinishisdesired, micromeshsandpapermaybeused.
5. Applythefinishofchoiceandpolish.
6. Removetheblankfromthemandrel.

3. PresstheCapintotheendoftheBrassTube.
4. Byhand,gentlypushtheBrassTubeontotheTipuntilitis fullyseatedintheblank.
