+Curriculum Overview

Math and ELA Reading and Writing curriculum is based on the CCSS.

Science is based on the Next Generation Science Standards, and FOSS curriculum

Religion curriculum is based on our SLE’s and the new Archdiocesan Religion Standards.

History curriculum is based on the WA State Social Studies standards.

+ELA Reading and Literature

Reader’s Workshop is used, as are literature circles. Non- Fiction curriculum:

Linked across curriculum in science, math, and history Covered in current events, Time for Kids and in technology class.

Fictional Literature and Reading curriculum: Novels covered by entire class:

Hatchet by Gary Paulsen Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson Forty Acres and Maybe a Mule by Harriette Gillem Robinet

Novels covered in small group: American Revolution era

Early Thunder by Jean Fritz The Secret Soldier by Ann McGovern The Fighting Ground by Avi George Washington’s Socks by Elvira Woodruff

+Writing

Students will be expanding on their knowledge of the writing process and of writing conventions

Students will be writing in all subject areas.

Students will write essays in a variety of formats including persuasive (argumentative), expository and informational.

Students will have writing assignments in class and often at home.

All final drafts will be typed.

Essays in 5th grade are a minimum of 5 paragraphs. Paragraph lengths are 4-8 sentences long.

All hand-written work is written in cursive, with the exception of math and personal notes.

+Mathematics

Math in Focus

- A new series to OLG in grade K-5 based on the Singapore Math model.

- Parent Information Night on October 16th. Details to follow.

- Students are spending 45 minutes to an hour a day on math.

Ten Marks

- Online program for grades 5-8. Purchased as part of our Funded Need item from last year’s auction to provide enrichment and support for all learners.

- Program will “go live” to 5th graders by October.

- Look for an email AND a hard copy letter to come home.

There are four FOSS Kits in Fifth Grade

*Full Option Science System

Each kit ranges in length from 3-11 weeks.

-Food and Nutrition

-Variables

+Religion

Focusing on our newly adapted religion standards including partial history of the church and the sacraments.

Large focus on understanding the Catholic Social Teachings (CST).

Focus on understanding and applying our SLEs.

Our service projects: Two Over 65 Dinners.

School Mass: Fifth Graders are in charge of 1 mass this year- in May.

Religion is covered across the curriculum.

United States History up to 1793- First Settlers

- Early civilizations in North America- Early migration/ immigration

- Exploration- Colonization

- Colonial America (Storypath)- Revolutionary War- Constitution/ Presidential Election

- Presidential Election (Storypath)

+History Continued…History covered across the curriculum:

- Historical Fiction in Literature

- Current Events in History class and in ELA.

- Technology Class

Projects for History:

- Students will be working on an interactive group presentation on explorers through use of iPads in class. - They will be doing research and will have a full rubric to follow.

- Students will also be completing a state project. - This year it will be different than their state reports. More

information to come in February.

+Homework

Homework is written everyday on the board. Students should expect between 45 minutes – 1 ½ hours a night

Monday- Thursday. Homework is not assigned on Friday unless it is a project (always assigned ahead of time).

Homework is copied in their student planners EVERY DAY.

Homework is TURNED IN on it’s due date (typically the next day), into the alphabet slide in the back of the room IMMEDIATELY FOLLLOWING MORNING PRAYER.

After the 1st month of school, I stop signing planners UNLESS….. Student stops doing his/her homework. Then it is signed by me

AND you for a minimum of a week until homework is being turned in and completed.

+Communication

Expect an email outlining weekly events, tests, projects, etc. by Tuesday morning at the latest. (Usually it’s out by Monday morning). If you do not receive an email by Tuesday, contact me. The email is also posted on the website in a more bulleted form. Parents and students will be informed of all projects well in

advance. No project will be assigned on Friday to be due on Monday.

All tests will be told to parents a week ahead of time. This excludes pop quizzes, which occur in reading from time

to time.

Assignments/Tests will go home on Thursdays along with FCE’s from the office.

+Misc. Community Service Project:

Over 65 Dinners! All students AND parents are expected to be there and

participate. Dates: Sunday, November 2nd
