Introduction | Introduzione
Fernando QuevedoDirector, Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics Direttore, Centro Internazionale di Fisica Teorica “Abdus Salam”
ICTP is celebrating a landmark: Fifty years of being the leading
research institution worldwide dedicated to the promotion
of science in all corners of the globe while at the same time
performing top level research in most areas of physics and
mathematics.
The dreams of its founding fathers—Abdus Salam and Paolo
Budinich—and the community of local scientists and authorities
that believed in them, are alive, now more than ever, given the
evolution of the world during the past decades and the increasing
role that science is playing in our lives. The Italian Government and
the United Nations, first through the IAEA and later also through
UNESCO, believed and shared this vision. It is clear that their
generous support has been well utilized over all these years.
It has been an honour for me to inherit the steps of Salam and
the previous directors and to help lead this wonderful community
of excellent researchers, lecturers and ambassadors of science
worldwide as well as a committed group of administrative staff
that have made all efforts to keep and enhance the spirit of Salam.
Their enthusiasm and dedication is contagious and has been key
to make ICTP a success story worth supporting, enhancing and
imitating.
Its 50th anniversary is the best time to recollect some key
moments in the life of ICTP. The ICTP community is large and only
a few moments have been possible to capture in this photo book.
In particular, the many activities organized and funded by ICTP
outside Trieste could not be well represented, given the limitations
of space. However, we hope its contents illustrate the richness
of ICTP’s mission and history, its impact in the life of scientists
worldwide, and the importance of all ICTP staff—scientific and
administrative—that over five decades have worked in unison to
make ICTP’s work as effective as possible.

ICTP Scientific Council Chairman Luciano Maiani.
Luciano Maiani, Presidente del consiglio scientifico dell’ICTP
ICTP incarnates the dream of the Pakistani Nobel laureate Abdus
Salam, to create a first-class centre, which scientists from the
developing world could visit periodically to remain in touch with
the front line of international research. In Salam’s vision, this would
make it possible for the good scientists in the emerging regions
to make valuable research without depriving their countries of the
potential associated with their studies and teaching, which Salam
thought to be a crucial element of progress.
Salam’s dream converged with another dream, that of Paolo
Budinich, an Italian theoretical physicist, to promote Trieste into an
international excellence centre for science.
In 1960, Edoardo Amaldi, a crucial personality in the shaping of
European science, learned of Salam’s intentions during a plenary
IAEA meeting in Vienna and informed Budinich, who promply wrote
a proposal to Salam to locate the centre in Trieste1. Thus, the idea
of ICTP was put on the road. The Centre was realized in 1964 as an
International Organization under the IAEA umbrella and with the
decisive contribution of the Italian Government, within a time scale
which today seems to us simply fabulous.
At the beginning, ICTP’s activity was mainly in the theory of
Elementary Particle Physics. I started my career in Florence at
about this time and recall the white-blue ICTP preprints arriving
from the Salam school, with exciting news about unifying spin and
flavor symmetries of the hadrons.
In time, new disciplines were added, like Condensed Matter
Physics, Astrophysics, Mathematics, Computing, Environment, and
Quantitative Biology, which now make the very complete panoply
of excellent research the Centre is able to offer to its visitors.

Introduction | Introduzione The Italian Government is still the main financial supporter of ICTP,
providing more than 90% of its annual budget. Until recently, this
budget was the unique resource to finance ICTP’s activities. Now,
ICTP is able to add a consistent funding from research contracts
from European research authorities and the like. But still, the Italian
contribution is vital to maintain the Centre’s continuing existence.
Coming here to Chair the Scientific Council, I have been impressed
by the role ICTP is playing in the promotion of science and
technology in Africa, a virgin territory in which organizations with
more national characterization have difficulties to operate. In this
sense, ICTP is still a great opportunity for Italy, one absolutely not to
be neglected.
Regional and city governments have been also very supportive
of ICTP as one of the leading institutions which make Trieste an
important scientific pole, and have been vital to provide a friendly
environment to ICTP’s visitors, scientists and students.
During the well-spent first fifty years, a sequence of excellent
Directors and first-class investigators have promoted ICTP to be an
important element of the international panorama, fully realizing
the role that Salam wanted for it.
Now, under the impulse of Director Fernando Quevedo, a new
phase is opening, namely the creation of a global network of
“branch ICTP institutions” which, under the UNESCO umbrella,
would bring excellence in science and technology closer to the
main users, scientists and students of emerging countries. Centres
in São Paulo, Brazil, Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas-Mexico and Izmir,
Turkey, are taking shape and others are under discussion in China,
Romania, Rwanda and other countries.
The 50 Years photobook documents all that, transmitting the
energy and strength with which Salam and Budinich carried
forward their creation and illustrating the mix of scientific and
political personalities who brought to ICTP their competencies and
their support, from J. R. Oppenheimer, first Chair of the Scientific
Council, to Giorgio Napolitano, President of the Italian Republic
and a strenuous supporter of international science and of ICTP in
particular.
Best wishes, then, to ICTP for its next fifty years and for its future
role as the coordinating institution of a global network of ICTP
branches, to promote science and technology for the progress of
the world of tomorrow.

plenario all’IAEA a Vienna venne a conoscenza delle intenzioni
Firenze all’incirca in quel periodo e ricordo ancora i “preprint” ICTP
Luciano MaianiPresidente, Consiglio Scientifico dell’ICTP
Fino a poco
mantenere l’ICTP in vita.
Centri
a San Paolo in Brasile, a Tuxtla Gutierrez nel Chiapas, Messico, e
a Smirne, in Turchia, stanno crescendo, e altri sono in cantiere in
Cina, Romania, Ruanda e in altre nazioni.
I migliori auguri, dunque, all’ICTP per i suoi prossimi cinquant’anni

This historical photograph, dated June 25, 1960, sets an important
landmark in the creation of the International Centre for Theoretical
Physics and in the development of “Trieste, Città della Scienza”.
Already in the late 1950’s, Paolo Budini (not yet “Budinich”), at that
time Director of a small Physics Institute of the Trieste University
(still housed in the main building of the University), started
breaking the isolation by inviting eminent theoretical physicists for
cycles of Seminars: Walter Thirring, Kurt Symanzik, and others were
invited by Paolo to come to Trieste and give series of seminars that
were attended by young Italian theoretical physicists from several
universities.
But the real event happened in June 1960. A Symposium on
Elementary Particle Interactions was organized in the “Castelletto”
of the Miramare Park. In addition to many young Italian theorists,
Luciano BertocchiDeputy Director, 1983-1997, and Acting Director, 1994-1995 Vicedirettore, 1983-1997, e Direttore ad Interim, 1994-1995

Introduction | Introduzione
the “scientific stars” of the meeting came from CERN (Jacques
Prentki, Sergio Fubini, Daniele Amati, Antonio Stanghellini), from
Vienna (Walter Thirring), from Yugoslavia (Vladimir Glaser), but
especially a young (with no beard but a black moustache) Abdus
Salam from Imperial College London.
Salam and Budini immediately resonated: Paolo had a dream of
breaking the isolation of Trieste through International Scientific
Research; Abdus Salam had a dream of founding a place where
scientists from the poorest countries could come and get in touch
with modern research.
This dream was later realized through the ICTP, the International
Centre for Theoretical Physics (now the Abdus Salam International
Centre for Theoretical Physics), followed by all the other scientific
institutions that now form “Trieste, Città della Scienza”. But
everything originated on the occasion of that meeting, on the
historical date of June 25, 1960.
ospitato all’interno dell’edificio principale dell’Università di Trieste,
Oltre a molti
dall’Imperial College London.
Paolo Budini e Abdus Salam cominciarono subito a ragionare sulle
reciproche aspirazioni. Budini desiderava rompere l’isolamento
di Trieste grazie a una ricerca scientifica di livello internazionale;
International Centre for Theoretical Physics (oggi rinominato “Abdus
Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics”) a cui, negli
