4. General The impellers of the fans are designed for: Howden Cooling Fans FRP impellers are designed for application in cooling towers, air-cooled condensers and air-cooled heat exchangers. The continues operating temperature range of the E-series and SX-series impellers is from -20 °C (-4 °F) to +65 °C (+149 °F). Occasionally, for period of up to 12 hours, the impeller may be exposed to a maximum temperature of +80 °C (+ 176 °F), for example during start-up or during stand still. In case the temperature in your application exceeds the maximum limits mentioned before, then please contact Howden for review of the full operating conditions. In a humid arrangement the fan blades must be provided with an erosion-resistant layer on the inlet side. The design conditions for your application, e.g. pressure, air flow, speed and blade pitch angle are stated in the Howden order confirmation. As such the Howden order confirmation is an integral part of these instructions. Raising the speed of this impeller is not allowed without prior written consent by Howden. The impeller consists of a hub plate with blades adjustable at stands till. The blades are of glass-fibre reinforced polyester (GRP). The impeller is fastened with a coupling flange and locking plate (which may or may not be supplied by Howden). The impellers are balanced according to ISO 1940, balancing quality grade G = 6,3. The fan shall be arranged in such a way that there is no obstruction to the air flow through the impeller casing. The fan support and drive shall be constructed such that the running characteristics are not unfavourably influenced. For the type designation, see 5.2. 4.1. Safety General The fan shall be used for the purpose it was designed for. Safety requirements and instructions shall be followed carefully. Personal protection equipment shall be used whenever required. See also Appendix 99-70.043 of this standard. Do not walk on the blades. Make certain that the security requirements mentioned above have been met in order to ensure safe working conditions. Commissioning Re-place any protection removed for maintenance purposes before starting up the fan. Necessary precautions shall be taken to prevent objects, e.g. assembly aids such as beams, supports and ladders, that might get into the fan, from hurting people or damaging the product. Maintenance Do not start any maintenance activities until the fan has been shut down and it is dead. This shall be done such that the power cannot be switched on unintentionally or inexpertly during maintenance. Protections which are mounted shall not be removed or put out of service, but shall be applied properly. When starting up the fan again, all legal requirements regarding safety distances from both live and rotating parts, shall be complied with..

5. Receipt and Product identification 5.1 Receipt instruction All consignments are accompanied by a packing list with the following data: a. order number of Howden and customer; b. impeller type c. parts supplied by Howden. The delivered goods shall be immediately checked upon arrival for: - full compliance with the order and/or - the description stated on the packing list. The parts are mentioned in chapter 12 Fig. 12, item Nos. 01 through 16. Any deviations, damage and/or omissions established upon receipt shall be reported forthwith to the forwarding agent or, if necessary, by telephone to Howden. In case of negligence from the costumer, claims for damages shall not be accepted at a later stage, unless clear evidence which shall also be acceptable to our forwarding insurance company, can be handed over proving Howden, or the respective forwarding agent, to be liable for the omission and/or damage. When unpacking an impeller from a closed crate: - all supporting blocks and fastenings shall be removed; - vulnerable parts packed in woodwool or otherwise shall be immediately removed from the

crate and stored in a dry room. The protection of machined surfaces shall never be removed before required for assembly purposes. 5.2 Product identification The impellers supplied by Howden are provided with a product identification plate. See the example in figure 1. The plate is attached to the clamping piece side of the hub plate. The plate states per order: - the Howden order number ("Order") - the Howden impeller type ("Type") From the impeller type one can deduce the following information: - impeller diameter (>100 [mm], < 100 [ft]) - blade type - number of blades From the blade type and the impeller diameter, using table 4 in section 7.5 one can deduce the accessory Howden coupling flange and the accessory fixing bolt. The type of coupling flange corresponds with the connecting dimension of the coupling flange, in mm.

7.6. Mounting instructions, blade adjustment Mounting of fan blades having a diameter of up to 14 feet inclusive or 4455 mm - Examine whether all fan blades are having the same project number. - Put every fan blade in a clamping block, ensuring that the blade number corresponds with the

number in the clamping lock.(for position order number and blade number see Fig. 7) Mounting of fans having a diameter of over 14 feet or 4455 mm - Examine whether all fan blades are having the same project number. - Fan blades may be mounted on any accompanying web plate. - In case of an odd set of fan blades in numerical sequence, for example for a 5-blade fan in

the sequence 11A, 11B, 11C, 11D and 11E. - In case of an even set of fan blades you should always mount blade A precisely facing blade B,

for example for a 6-blade fan 31A facing 31B, 32A facing 32B and 33A facing 33B.

Fig.7 Place each blade in the bottom clamp such that the numbers of the blade and of the bottom clamp correspond. Mount the top clamp(s) and U-bolt(s). The nuts of the U-bolts have been provided with a special "low friction" coating. ONLY these nuts, to be supplied by Howden, must be used. Fix the U-bolts such that the blade can still be somewhat turned in the clamp, necessary for the pitch adjustment. The blade stem collar shall abut against the bottom clamp, which can be achieved by pulling the blade outwards. After adjustment of the blade angle (E, T-type, point 7.6.1; SX-type, point 7.6.2), the nuts of the U-bolts have to be torqued, using the value stated in table 6. See table 5 for the correct size of the screw thread. Tighten firstly the U-bolt at the collar side.

WARNING !! Tighten the nuts of the U-bolts evenly. See 7.6 table 5 and 6 for the correct tightening torque. During tightening of the U-bolts, keep checking that the blade pitch does not change and that the blade spindle collars do not move. Readjust, where appropriate. After initial installation you are required to re-tighten the U-bolts as they may have loosened due to creep of the FRP material of the blade shaft. Re-tightening of the U-bolts shall either be done 120-150 hours after original installation in case the fan has not been operated, or 50-75 hours after start-up of the fan in case the fan has been put in operation immediately after installation. Note: For some special applications the lower clamping pieces have location bolts instead of location pins. These bolts shall not be tightened again, as they have been locked in the factory using “Locktite”.

7.6.2 Adjustment of SX-type blade angle For SX fans the blade adjustment can be done in two ways: See table 7 for the dimens ions. 1. By marking the blade tip height in the fan casing. The height can be found by adding the values R and T. For the intermediate values

R and T can be found by interpolating. This applies to both the situation according to figure 9a and 9b.

2. By adjusting the angle between blade and spindle collar. The angle to be adjusted is determined by adding the correction angle ß and the selected blade angle. This applies only to the situation according to figure 9a.

7.7. Balancing Impellers with straight blades and a diameter smaller than 4455 mm, just like SX impellers with a diameter smaller than 2743 (=9') , have been balanced in assembly. This can be done in two ways: A. clamping at the flow inlet side B. clamping at the flow outlet side How the impeller has been balanced is stated on the sticker that has been affixed to the hub. See figure 10.

Fig. 10 If not agreed otherwise, the impeller is balanced according to standard B.

WARNING!! If the impeller is installed otherwise than it has been balanced, i.e. configuration A instead of B or the other way round, the risk exists that the fan has to be balanced again.

7.8. Mounting instr., adjusting the impeller with regard to the impeller casing The impeller is to be adjusted centrically in the impeller casing. The adjustment procedure is as follows: - Determine the longest blade by measuring on all blades the space between the blade tip and the impeller casing, from a fixed point in the impeller casing. The longest blade has the

smallest measured clearance. - Now rotate the impeller with the longest blade fitted in the impeller casing and measure the clearance between blade tip of the longest blade and impeller casing. The number of measuring points is indicated in table 8 - The design clearance between blade tip and impeller casing is 0.5% of the impellerdiameter. - The minimum allowable local clearance between blade tip and impeller casing is 0.33% of

the impeller diameter.

8. Inspections before commissioning Check if the machine into which the impeller has been incorporated complies with the provisions of Directive 98/37/EEC. If not so, then Appendix 99-70.043 of this standard is applicable. 8.1. Inspections before initial commissioning with stationary impeller Check: - the fastening of the blade and sequence; - the tightening torques of the impeller fastening bolts, see 7 table 2,3,4,5 and 6 - the clearance between blade tip and impeller casing, see 7.8. - the blade pitch, see 7.6, figure 9 for SX impellers, and 7.6, figure 8 for other impeller types; - the direction of rotation (see arrow indicating the direction of rotation on the driver); - that there is no obstruction in the air flow through the impeller casing; - that any wire mesh, scaffolding etc. has been removed; - that gauze frames are mounted.

9. Fan Commissioning Do not start the fan without properly installed guards, whether or not part of our supply, and without all safety measures having been complied with, see chapter 4.1. Check: - the dynamic running characteristics of the fan, see Chapter 11 "TROUBLE SHOOTING"; - the main shaft bearing temperatures according to instructions of the bearing manufacturer; - the absorbed power or current intensity. If the absorbed power or current intensity are too high, proceed as follows: Check that the ambient temperature corresponds with the operating tem perature applicable. At a LOWER ambient temperature the absorbed power increases. If a possible power deviation cannot be explained from the temperature difference mentioned, the blade pitch shall be adjusted. This adjustment shall be in the 1 to 3 degree range. 9.1 First inspection

WARNING !! Since the material of the blade spindle will creep after the initial installation, Howden advices to tighten the nuts of the U-bolt before putting the fan in to operation or just before leaving the plant, however not earlier than 50-75 hours in operation or 150 hours at stilstand. If this is not done, the blades will come loose, which may result in a disaster. See 7, table 5 and 6 for the proper tightening torques.

10. Maintenance Instructions Although the impeller requires only little supervision and maintenance, it is yet necessary to inspect it at at regular intervals to prevent break-downs due to vibrations, moisture or fouling. During the performance of maintenance activities at the fan, the impeller should be fastened and the electric connection of the E-motor should be disconnected 10.1. Blade maintenance The blades shall be inspected at regular intervals depending on the operating conditions, but with a minimum of once every month, for deposits and damage. Deposits shall be removed using brushes and/or a water jet with a maximum wate r pressure of 3 bar. Check if the holes at the blade end are open. (See fig. 11) Neglected damaged areas can result in attack of the glass-fibre layers because of moisture entering through these spots. Maintenance and repair can only be carried out properly according to Howden procedures. For more information on this subject you are to contact Howden. 10.2. Impeller maintenance To ensure optimal functioning and operational safety of the impeller, it is necessary to at least once a year: a) check the tightening torque of the bolt connections, see 7 table ,2,3,4,5 and 6 b) to apply a new paint coating, if the paint coating is damaged or corroded away, to prevent

corrosion. The paint type shall be at least equal to the original paint.

c) to replace corroded bolts and nuts in time.

11.2. Vibrations If the vibration amplitudes measured at the main shaft bearings exceed 7,1 mm/s (according ISO 10816-1, class IV, group B recommendations, proceed as fol lows; (this only regards the fan) - check the fastening bolts of the motor and/or gearbox for correct tightening torques. - check the alignment of the total drive. - check the mating faces of coupling and hub plate. - check for imbalance of motor, motor rope pulley, gearbox or cardan shaft. - check the position and fastening of the blades. - check if the holes at the blade end are open. (See fig. 11) In case of any failure, please contact Howden stating order number as present on fan name plate and packing list.
