My wife and I both really excited to have a newanimal friend in the house. But here’s the thing:
I’ve never lived with a dog…ever. Growing up, myfamily’s house was a pet-free one.
Over the past couple of weeks I’ve encountered acouple of things I never thought would happen.
1. Puppies likeeating shoes
I had always heard storiesof dogs eating shoes, but I
didn’t believe them. Whywould anything want to eat
a shoe?!? It’s not like theground is made out of sugaror dog-bones or whatever a
living thing might findtasty to eat.
2. Puppies likeeating socks
Apparently puppies likechewing everything
because of this “teething”thing. At any rate, aside
from nearly costing me apair of Asics Gels, it has
cost me a number of pairsof socks.
3. Puppies like eatingunderwear
I’ll spare you the details.Just know that no sort of
undergarment fabric issafe from puppy jaws.
4. Puppies makemesses
I knew that housebreakingwas going to be tough, but Ihad know idea what degree
of vigilance it would require. Here's the thing: if you get apuppy, just make your peace
that she's going to makebathroom on your living
room carpet. Multiple times.
5. Puppies don't like to be leftalone, even when they're not leftalone
I knew that housebreakingwas going to be tough, but Ihad know idea what degree
of vigilance it would require. Here's the thing: if you get apuppy, just make your peace
that she's going to makebathroom on your living
room carpet. Multiple times.
6. You'll start viewing yourpuppy as your child
Your puppy will becomethe center of your worldand you will believe that
you are the center of yourpuppy's world. Your puppywill become your sun; you
its stars. Whenever youare without your puppy,
you will be wondering if itis safe and ok.
7. No matter how many shoes apuppy chews, or messes shemakes on the living roomcarpet, or nights she keeps youup barking, or times that shemakes you irrationally worry, apuppy is beautiful thing to havethe experience of knowing and Iam blessed to have Piper.
