PROMOTION TO 8TH GRADE
To be promoted to 8th grade:
• You must have an overall average of 70 or higher in all courses.
• You must also have an overall average of 70 or higher in 3 of the 4 core subject areas:
1. English and Reading
2. Math
3. Science
4. Social Studies
Students who do not meet these requirements must either
attend summer school or repeat the 7th grade.
COURSE SELECTION PROCESS
1. Course selection presentations will be week of January 22nd.
2. Take your course selection sheet home to share with your parents. Both you and
your parent must sign the form!
3. Return your completed, signed/initialed course selection sheet to YOUR SCIENCE
TEACHER by FEBRUARY 1ST.
4. Students will meet individually with a counselor the week of February 20th to input
their courses into the computer.
COURSE REQUESTS OVERVIEW
• Course sheets must be turned in to YOUR SCIENCE TEACHER by FEB 1ST.
• If you are moving or planning to move, you must fill it out anyway.
• Both the student and parent must sign the course sheet.
All students must sign up for the following courses:
1. English
2. Math
3. Social Studies
4. Science
5. PE or Athletics
6. Two electives and three alternate electives
PREAP PROGRAM INFORMATION
It is recommended that students meet the following criteria for PreAP classes:
1. Have an “A” average in the academic class, or a “B” average in the PreAP class.
2. Have parent approval.

PreAP courses are designed to challenge
motivated students and prepare them for success
in advanced coursework. These courses:
1. typically move at a faster pace,
2. are academically challenging,
3. require more independent learning, and
4. require more homework than academic
courses.
PREAP PROGRAM INFORMATION
The PreAP Course Commitment form is included on the back of the course selection sheet.
• Students may exit a PreAP course during
the first 6-weeks grading period or at the
end of the 1st semester.
• The student must have teacher and parent
approval to exit.
• If the student’s 6-weeks average falls
below 70, it is recommended to exit the
class at the end of the grading period.
GT STUDENTS
• Students must be screened and identified to
be eligible for GT courses.
• If you are in the screening process currently,
sign up for PreAP. Once testing is completed,
we will make any necessary changes.
8TH GRADE ATHLETICS• Students may not sign themselves up for
athletics.
• Please see the coach if you are interested in
playing a sport in 8th grade.
• Coaches will give the counselors a list of
students to be scheduled into the athletic
period later this semester.
• Off Campus PE: Students who are participating
in 5-14 hours of approved off campus PE training
will have their PE class replaced with a study
hall. If you participate in 15 or more hours, you
may be released from campus after 7th period.

• Orchestra – Beginning, 2nd Year or 3rd Year

• Algebra I (J0211) • Requires completion of 7th Grade Pre Ap Math with an EOY of 75% or
higher

Semester grades and grade points earned in all high school credit courses become a permanent part of the student’s
high school transcript.

• Principles of Human Services (J8353)
• An introductory CTE course supporting the Public Services endorsement.
• Principles of Applied Engineering (J8616)
• The first course in the Engineering pathway for the STEM endorsement.
• Students who complete this course in 8th grade may enroll in the second course in this pathway, Engineering Design & Presentation, in 9th grade.
Semester grades and grade points earned in all high school credit courses
become a permanent part of the student’s high school transcript.
HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT COURSES
• If you take a high school credit course in 8th grade, you MUST NOT request the same course in high school.
• You CANNOT repeat a course for which you have already earned credit.
• No credit is awarded for a duplicated course.
OTHER COURSES
• Math Block - designed to help refine and review math
skills in preparation for the STAAR test.
• Reading Elective - designed to help improve reading
level and basic reading skills in preparation for the
STAAR test.
• You will be recommended to take these classes if you
do not pass the Math or Reading section of the 7th
grade STAAR test. This class will replace your elective.
REMEMBER!
• Course selection sheets are due to YOUR
SCIENCE TEACHER by FEBRUARY 1ST .
• Keep your course selection sheet neat and
clean. Take good care of it!
• Choose your courses wisely – think carefully
about your choices.
• Talk to your teachers about PreAP placement.
• Choose the elective that’s most interesting to
you.
• List two alternate electives.
• Sign and return the course sheet on time!
