SKILLED & GLOBAL
VOLUNTEERISM
Desiree Adaway,
Principal of The Adaway Group
Corporate, Skilled and Pro-Bono VolunteerismWhile all volunteers add value to your organization, there are many opportunities to utilize volunteers with the specific skills and certifications that your organization needs. This can be done on an individual basis or through partnerships with local businesses, schools, and organizations.
Best Practices• Be thoughtful about the needs of your organizations and intentional in setting
expectations with potential volunteers. Create clear job descriptions including the scope of the project and what you are asking the volunteer to do. This will not only increase the volunteer’s output, but also increase their engagement with your organization.
• Identify businesses in your local area that employ the type of talent that you are looking for (writers, engineers, bookkeepers, scientists, computer programmers, etc.).
• Ensure a match between the culture of your organization and the skilled volunteer.
Example• Whirlpool Corporation partnership with Habitat for Humanity
#vmlearn
International Corporate VolunteeringCreating or promoting opportunities for individuals and businesses to volunteer with your organization internationally can have a huge impact on your work including raising funds and awareness.
Best Practices• Create clear and specific partnership opportunities.• Create opportunities for education throughout the experience.• Make connections between home and abroad.
Examples:• Bain and Company & Habitat for Humanity International’s Global
Village Program• Lowe’s & Habitat for Humanity International Disaster Response
