Volume 23, Issue 1 December/January 2017
A Bicentennial Christmas December 5
This year’s family Christmas party will be held on Monday, December 5 from 6:00 - 8:00
pm. Snowstorm Steve, a funologist from Silly Safaris, will share hu-
mor and animals—including a reindeer—during two programs. The
first program will begin at 6:15 and the second at 7:15. Santa Claus
will be available through the evening to hear Christmas wish requests
and take photos. Magician Marc Lehmann will astound visitors with
magic as they wait to see Santa.
Children will be able to choose a craft and a free book to take home at
the end of the night. Refreshments will be available for children and
their families.
This evening of family fun is open to the public and registration is not
required. We hope to see you December 5!
Christmas Tea at Thorntown Heritage Museum
‘Tis the season for an old fashioned Christmas Tea! On Saturday, December 10 from 2-4
p.m. the Thorntown Heritage Museum will host its annual Victorian celebration. Everyone
is cordially invited. Formal attire is encouraged, but jeans are also welcome. Bring your
camera for family photos.
Each room will include a Christmas game, a special project, or another fun activity. In the
cozy kitchen you will find an assortment of delicious teas, lemonade, and cookies. This
year’s program will feature a performance by the Wabash College T-Tones! Stop in the mu-
seum located at 124 West Main Street anytime between 2-4 p.m. For more information,
please call the library.
Holiday hours: The library will be closed on December 24th through 26th for Christmas.
We will also be closed on Monday, January 2nd.

Youth Department News
There will be only a few youth programs during the month of December because of the busyness of
the season. Please check the calendar to see our upcoming youth activities.
We plan to start the new year off right with lots of great programs!
Youth Cook is back! Join us on January 12 as we learn to create a simple, delicious recipe. This
activity begins at 3:30 p.m. and is perfect for kids in grades 3-6. Come prepare a simple hands-on
meal that you can eat afterwards.
LEGO fans--the library hosts a LEGO build every month!
Come build whatever you like, using library-provided LEGO
and Duplo blocks, and we’ll display your creations throughout the library for the next month.
Maker Action Center (MAC) is what we call our new mak-
erspace. What is a makerspace? It’s a workspace for build-
ing, tinkering, fabricating, and creating. Work on small-
scale electrical and mechanical projects. Create jewelry or
try working with K’nex! If you’re the artistic type, we have
projects for you, too. We change activity offerings each month. This MAC activity is designed for
grades K-6 and is absolutely free! Join us for our first meeting of the year on Thursday, January
26 from 3:30-4:30.
Last, but certainly not least, we will have our storytimes on Tuesdays in January. Toddlers, pre-
schoolers, and their caregivers gather at 10:30 and ages 4-9 can participate in Adventure Sto-
rytime at 3:30. These are always tons of fun--hope to see you here!
Survive the Holidays - Paracord Bracelets for Teens!
The library has supplies to make paracord survival bracelets! What are these? They’re bracelets
crafted from 550 lb. paracord. In a pinch, the bracelets can be deconstructed, leaving the wearer
with 8-10 ft. of useful cord. Paracord can be used to secure tents and mend broken backpacks.
Cord can be used as a belt, suspenders, or bootlaces, or even a tourniquet or splint! Individual
filaments from the cord can become fishing line in an emergency.
The library will offer two drop-in programs during the winter months. Visit the library Young
Adult room between 4-6 on Tuesday, December 20 or 4-6 on Wednesday, January 11 to learn how
to make your own paracord bracelet. Supplies will also be available as take-home kits.
Have you heard? Library Cat Chance has a new collar with an extra-jingly bell!

Gourd-geous Opportunities
Learn how to grow, clean, and craft the gourd-geous gourd by participating in the Sugar
Creek Gourd Patch sessions on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays in the library meeting room from
6-8:00 p.m. or join the Thorn Tree Gourd Patch from 2-4:00 p.m.
on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. Questions may be directed to
Karen at the library. Some gourds, supplies and equipment may
be available but it helps to know who will be participating. On
December 10 the Indiana Gourd Society will hold both member-
ship and board meetings at the library, and gourd enthusiasts are
welcome to attend at 10:00 a.m.
Lori Rader-Day Visit: Save the Date!
Join us for a special Easter-time author talk on Saturday, April 15 at 2:00 p.m. Western
Boone graduate Lori Rader-Day is enjoying tremendous success as a novelist and will join us
in celebrating the publication of her third novel with our lamb-shaped cake. Her third novel,
The Day I Died, will be released on April 11, 2017. Before then, plan to read (or re-read!)
Little Pretty Things and The Black Hour; these suspense thrillers are located in adult fiction
under FIC RAD.
Stuffed Animal Sleep Over
The Thorntown Heritage Museum will host a special sleep over on Friday, January 20th at 4
p.m. Children of all ages are invited to bring their favorite (or second favorite) teddy bear or
stuffed animal for an exciting story time where they will learn all about the Museum’s most
interesting items. Then, children will say goodnight to their animals who will be sleeping
right there at the museum. Teddy bears and stuffed animals may be picked
up at the library at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Parents, children, and
teddy bears will enjoy photos showing how their furry pals spent the even-
ing. Parents are welcome to stay for Friday’s 4-5 p.m. program.
CHILDREN: Please bring only one furry friend, and make sure you can sleep without your
stuffed animal for the night! The sleepover will be chaperoned by museum staff, so your
stuffed animals are in good hands.
Writers’ Group
Our next Writers’ Group will meet in Room 116 at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 19th. The
suggested topic will be “My New Year’s Resolution” although a one page article or short story
on any subject is welcome. Light refreshments will be served.

December Book Discussion
December’s book discussion selection is The Trail of the Lonesome Pine by John Fox, Jr. Set
in the Appalachian Mountains at the turn of the 20th century, this romance/Western novel
was among the top ten bestselling novels of 1908-1909. The novel dramatizes the Tolliver-
Falin Feud, one of several long-running family feuds that occurred in the southeast in the
19th and 20th centuries. The Trail of the Lonesome Pine was adapted as a stage play and
was designated the "official outdoor drama" by the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1994.
All are welcome to join the group, even if they haven’t finished reading the book. Light re-
freshments will be served, and discussions usually last one hour. Copies are available for
checkout at the adult circulation desk.
January Taste of Home
Start the New Year by taste-testing some
new recipes. Join other interested cooks at
the library at 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, Jan-
uary 2. We eat, critique the recipes, and go
home with copies for our future use. Report
your recipe choice(s) by calling the adult cir-
culation desk (765-436-7348). Bring the pre-
pared dish and your table service and plan to
enjoy good conversation. Recipes may be se-
lected from your family files or magazines,
including “Taste of Home” and “Simple &
Delicious”, or from cookbooks or websites. As
long as we have a copy before the event, we
shall in advance make recipe copies for all
who plan to participate. Recipes that have
been selected to date include “Baked Mac &
Cheese” and “White Almond No-Bake Cook-
ies.”
January Genealogy Program
The first genealogy program of the new
year will take place on Wednesday, January
11th at 7 p.m. We will meet in the library’s
computer lab and discuss how to hunt for
hidden family treasures. Join us as we
search the Internet for heirlooms! For more
information please contact Phyllis at the
library.
Tax Forms
Tax forms have been ordered and should be
available in January. Once available, forms
will be near the local history desk in the
library’s upper level. In addition, on the six
computers in the lab there are links to
printable IRS and Indiana forms. You may
call the library to check availability of
printed forms.
‘Tis the Season!

past year. We hope you agree that we’ve been able to offer valuable, interesting, and worth-
while programs and learning opportunities in 2016. Please consider renewing your SCHS
